Thank you to NetGalley for the review copy.

Moderately cringe in its premise and execution; starts with some very flirty monster girls and their human teacher, sets up like a herum. The premise could be fun if there were less fan-service.

My thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press/Yen On for an eARC of this to read and review.

DNF at 25%. I tried, I really did. The premise sounded interesting, but as soon as I realized it was a male adult teaching four young, demi-human female characters, a warning went off in the back of my head. This isn't going to be slightly-to-completely inappropriate, is it?

To me, yes, yes it is. Only slightly, but enough to kill any enjoyment I might have had in the book. The teen-aged girls were being flirty to teasing to almost-but-not-quite coming on to the teacher. Who would tell himself it was wrong, but still be A Dude in his mind about the attention. Realistic, yes. What I want to read about every few pages, no.

I can see this being popular with certain readers and that's fine. There is a reader for every book. It just didn't work for this reader.

2, I didn't hate it but didn't really enjoy it, stars.

A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans, Vol. 1 Story by Kurusu Natsume, Illustration by Sai Izumi. Judging by the title and cover I thought this was a graphic novel, fair warning that while there are scattered illustrations, it is not.

I'm Rei Hitoma, a self-professed misanthrope thanks to some past trauma. Just when I thought my new teaching job in the mountains would provide a chill, rejuvenating environment, it turns out that this school is actually for demi-humans who want to become full-fledged human beings! There’s a mermaid, a werewolf, a rabbit, and a bird...all of whom are now my charges. It’s my duty to teach them about humankind—and maybe in the process, I’ll learn a few things myself. This isn't an alternate world or a case of reincarnation. It’s just the story of a teacher at a somewhat peculiar school, and his students who are striving to become human.

A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans is an interesting read, and deeper than I was looking for or expecting from the title. I was expecting a bit of a fun fish out of water story. There certainly was some of that, but there was also a great deal of insight into how people think and think they are perceived by others. Not only does Hitoma learn about the demi humans that are his students, he grows and matures along the way as well. I think readers get a good understanding of all the major characters and still get surprised a few times along the way. I honestly picked this book up expecting a light, fun read to take a break between some denser reads- and while I did not get what I was looking for I still really enjoyed the ride.

Cute but a little cringe. The main character is good but I felt he could be better. He's got a harem growing in his students and the way they act is crazy. It did make me laugh and I appreciate that. Not sure if I'll read more but I'll definitely think about it.

Rei Hitoma was living at home playing games all day after leaving his last teaching job under a cloud. They he got a job at Shiranui High School being the homeroom teacher for the Advanced students. But this is a school for demi-humans who are wanting to learn how to be live as a human. The problem for Rei is that is is not too hep on being human himself. So as he teaches the four female demi-humans to be human, he was learning himself. An interesting read that subtly gets the reader to think and accept themselves before moving forward. Plenty of interesting twists to surprise the reader.

Thanks Netgalley for the chance to read this title.

Sadly, I wasn't able to read this book in time before it got archived. It looked oodles of fun (that blurb that title) and I was really happy I was accepted to read it. So thanks publisher, sorry I was just not in time this time.
I will rate it 4 stars as that is my level of hype for this book + points for cover and blurb.

This was an interesting read where if you like mythical creatures fantasy x school life, then this one is for you. There was funny and some cute moments in this book and this book was a fast read. I will do say that if you are not a slice of life reader then this book may not be for you but if you do like school life and slice of life genre then pick this up!

This is unfortunately a DNF.

As interested as I was in this story, it’s unfortunate that the file available as a watermark so clear in the middle of every single page, that it makes the story almost impossible to read. I understand the need for a watermark, but please, if there is a watermark, please turn the transparency down on it so the text is legible.

I didn't finish this book. I have read 44% of it.

I can't really pinpoint the problem here, I think it may be a certain lack of warmness as a vibe. I mean, the book delivers exactly what it should, the story is what you'll expect from the synopsis and the setting is interesting but... but it would be more interesting if the author showed us more. It would have been nice to explore, in some ways, to see more of this school. And the characters are nice and interesting but they don't really feel alive, or real enough. So, it wasn't really a bad reading, it was more that there is a sort of plainness that permeated all of it. I can't say that this is a bad book, at all, but it is hard to feel something for it.

Thank you Yen Press and NetGalley for providing me with this arc in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first time reading a light novel and it won’t be my last.

The illustrations on the cover and at the beginning and throughout this novel were fantastic!! I especially loved the colorful ones, they’re so vibrant and just gorgeous! And actually being introduced to the characters by seeing their illustrations, accompanied with their names, at the start, was so nice and even though there weren’t that many characters, I did go back to them a few times when I forgot who was who.

Rei Hitoma is a young burnt out teacher who lost his job after a certain incident and is now living at his parents house, spending his days gaming. His mom tries to encourage him to keep searching for a new job and driven by guilt he decides to give job hunting another go. He comes across a strange listing for an all girls private school teaching job. Nostalgia of the fun times he had as a teacher, hits when he goes through the school’s pictures and that makes him apply for the job. And that’s how he ends up teaching 4 unusual girls at a quirky, free spirited school with a magical twist! A school outside reality, where he is treated with kindness and consideration by his new colleagues and where he feels happy again.

So many surprises and mysteries follow but also just nice day to day school life.

Mr. Hitoma and his students experience so much growth, get to know themselves and what they want from life and it just made me happy that they were in the best environment to learn, heal and grow.

“Is it all right for me to put down this weight? “Why not? The past will bear it for you.”

One of my favorite quotes. Mr. Hitoma (who looks cute by the way :)) doesn’t only watch over his students while they evolve. He realizes he needs to let go of his past and learn to like himself and humans.

Mr. Hitoma doesn’t always know how to deal with or act around 4 hormonal teenagers and it shows, but I liked that because some things that happened made me a bit uncomfortable too so his reaction felt right to me and was often really funny (“let me find a tree farther away to sit under”) and that broke the uncomfortable tension immediately.

I loved how every single character in this book had a distinct personality and often surprising reasons why they acted how they acted. And who or what some of them actually really were, made for some of the most amazing and surprising moments!

This was an easy relaxing read that made me smile, laugh and one time even cry a little (at an incredibly precious life altering moment for one of the students).

The way this ended was perfect. A surprising ending that didn’t feel rushed and didn’t leave me with any questions.

A beautiful, creative, imaginative and heartfelt debut.

Thanks to Netgalley for the copy for an honest review.
It was ok but it really wasn’t for me… the writing was ok but yeah I couldn’t really get into it.

A Misanthrope Teaches a Class for Demi-Humans, Vol. 1 is a light novel about a young male teacher who gets hired to teach at a school for beings that want to become human. These beings can be anything from animals, to mythical creatures such as mermaids, or stuffed animals.

The main character Hitomi is put in charge of the senior class of 4 girls who are trying to graduate and become human. Throughout the story, each girl gets her chance to shine and has a little side story. I though the stories were sweet and showed why each girl really wanted to become human. Something that really bugged me was that the girls kept flirting with the teacher, and he would push away their advances but also kept having thoughts that the girls were cute. Yuck! If those parts were taken out, I would have enjoyed this immensely more.

The writing style was fast paced, but it also seemed like it was written by a high schooler, or like a fan fiction. The target age range would be good for teens, but hopefully they don't go getting any hints about having a crush on a teacher (I really wish those parts of the book were just omitted!) The writing wasn't great by any means, but the story was engaging and creative, and I think a lot of people will enjoy.
