My 3 boys (age 5, 8 and 10) absolutely loved this book and said countless times throughout reading it how cute the pictures are! It’s beautifully illustrated.
My 8 year old even stopped me midway through the first time reading and said “Mom! This is a REALLY good book!”
The book follows a German shepherd police dog and his partner and gives kids a glimpse of how dogs are used in the police force, and showcases some of their special abilities. We loved that this book is based on a true story and had facts on each page too!

A super cute book about K9 police dogs. We read this in conjunction with our very own police dog visit and it was wonderful. Great pictures, good story, and fun facts!
I was pleasantly surprised how enjoyable this was. I would absolutely read this to my children so they can see what life for a working police dog is like. What it means when they see a working K9. Not everything is catch the bad guy, save the day, be a hero. The pictures were fantastic. The writing perfect for the intended audience. Very happy to have read this.
An early reader about a day in the life of a police dog – from waking its human up to having all the potential of his job, as in rescuing people, downing fleeing felons, finding drugs – but no, having as the highlight a visit to a school. Still, so many people have made their racist attitude against the US police known, I guess such outreach work is just as vital as actually solving crimes. As a read it's fine, with a silly/child-friendly subplot about the policeman having lost his cap, although the way the factoids routinely interrupt the flow of the narrative can be jarring. Great illustrations show the dog off well, and all told we're shown to respect the police canine, in what it can do and what it doesn't do until ordered to. Now, if such a book could get all those blm-influenced bigots to respect the police officer likewise, the world would be so much better off.
I was looking forward to reading this book on NetGalley since we are a first responder family. There aren't that many good picture books about Police Officers. I loved how this was about an actual K9 dog and his Officer which really makes it more authentic. The best part was the little fun facts on each page. I do wish they would have added a 'fun fact' about when it's appropriate to pet a K9 if you see them around town. I know my kids love dogs and I always tell them no petting since they are working but honestly don't know if that is the right thing to do or not. The illustrations are realistic vs cartoon which I enjoy. This would be a fun read for those kids interested in Police Officers or for a first responder family.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I very much joining Sargent Mark and Mattis's day. Although the story is wonderful, the little squares of facts throughout the book were my favorite part. I think kids will love this book as much as I did.
K9 Mattis on the Job by Mark Tappan is a very well done depiction of the daily life of a K9 and his officer. The illustrations add to the book and the addition on each page of fun facts is a bonus. I would definitely recommend this book for an introduction to K9 work.
This book is a sweet, simple, but beautiful way to give young kids a glimpse into the life of a working police dog! I loved the illustrations...absolutely precious and very well done. This will definitely be added to our preschool library section!
This book was great! Lots of color and detail. The fun facts that are added in are a nice touch. Being told by the k9 makes it more interesting to children. My 6 year old son enjoys it too.
Such a cute story and a great way to introduce kids to police dogs with lots of fun fact sections included.
This is so cute story about K9 dog! The dog was so adorable. And i imagine if i had tgat dog.
A must book to read because its have a fun fact inside. Kids should rea to know more also suitable for teens.
What does K9 dog do in a day? As we follow the life of Mattis and his handler, Mark, we learn so many things about a police dog's life. They are so clever with so many abilities, and also fun to be with. This particular canine held so many awards. For the fans of Paw Patrols, here's the real thing. The book is beautifully illustrated, too!!
A cute picture book following a K-9 officer at work for the day as well as his human partner. I enjoyed the book.
Such an adorable story about a police officer and his dog working together. I enjoyed all the fun facts, however, the quantity of them may affect the flow of the story when reading aloud. Still, I liked reading about the adventures and learning what a K9 police dog can do. This belongs in an elementary school library!
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
This isn’t typically the type of book I would download to read but being a law enforcement family & having two little girls who are OBSESSED with dogs, it easily caught my eye. (Maybe I should mention that my daughters & I have followed K9 Mattis on social media for a while & love his videos.). I think this book is perfect for kids. When kids (and adults) think about police officers, they think about the human behind the badge. It is easy to forget about the highly trained K9s who also put their lives on the line every day. I will 100% be purchasing this book for my home & for my nephews who are obsessed with my husband & his career.
Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas Nelson & Mark Tappan for the opportunity to review this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to K9 Mattis for your service & enjoy your well deserved retirement. Thank you Sergeant Mark for your service.
A sweet and simple book to talk about all the tasks a K9 dog would do during a day including his favorite…
Spend a day with Mattis, a German Shepherd K9, and his partner Sergeant Mark. The colorful illustrations are engaging with lots of fun details. Each 2-page spread contains a Fun Fact like this one:
German Shepherds like Mattis can smell things over one mile away on land and up to forty feet underground.
Now that's a powerful sniffer. When you share this book with a favorite kiddo you will find out what activity is Mattis's favorite. Hint: it isn't eating. 🐕🦺

K9 Mattis On the Job
K9 Mattis and his partner Officer Mark have many duties that they love to do but Mattis’ favorite job is to show off his skills to school children.
The hook of this story is Officer Mark’s missing hat which perhaps Mattis can find but only after he shows the school kids how good he is at finding a buried toy.
The illustrations are bright and uncomplicated while the Fun Fact on each page spread provides interesting facts about the work that K9s do.
I received a copy of this sweet book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a story about a K9 dog and his human partner. I think children will enjoy the bond between the officer and his very smart K9 buddy.
We join Sgt Mark and his best friend K-9 Mattis for a day's fun work and learn enough about K-9 police and the things that protect them so that we are not scared of them. I'm already a fan, so this is preaching to the choir for me!
The illustrations by Donald Wu are delightful, imaginative, detailed, and colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from Thomas Nelson: CHILDREN'S, Tommy Nelson via NetGalley. Thank you!
