Mother’s Resort is located on a private tropical island and Christmas celebrations are about to begin.
You’ll meet a cast of characters that all come with their own stories: Amanda, Grace, Olivia, Katie, Leigh Ann, and Iris. As they prepare for Christmas and the time they’ll spend with each other and their families, they also find time to reflect on all that they’ve built here in Compass Key.
I really enjoyed listening to this novel and can’t wait to read or listen to others in this series. I’ve listened to other books written by Maggie Miller and this one did not disappoint. I also enjoyed that multiple narrators were used to tell the story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Spotify Audiobooks for allowing me to listen to an ARC of this novel. #NetGalley #ChristmasontheIsland
Christmas on the Island
Compass Key #6
Maggie Miller
This is the first book I have read in this series. The story revolves around six women and Mother’s Resort on Compass Key. It’s Christmas time and everyone is excited. The island is a vacation retreat for the well to do. I liked the characters; they are sweet and nice.
I kept waiting for something to happen, but it didn’t. There was no conflict. There was nothing that would keep me interested. This book got a lot of good reviews especially from fans of the series. I wish I could say more but for me it was a 3 star.
Christmas on the Island was such an easy going read. I really enjoyed the narrators. Although the story fell a little short for me, I still find myself wanting to go back to Compass Key.
I really enjoyed this audiobook. Iris is a really sweet and very rich woman who treats her staff on her island very well. It was a fun read. Finished in two days.
I really couldn’t get into this audiobook my mind kept wondering, I wasn’t keen on the narrator. Most probably the main reason being is the fact I haven’t read any of the series, this is something I will look into and I think I’ll read it rather than listen to it. Thanks for the opportunity. Loved the cover.
Christmas on the Island follows 5 friends who live and work at a resort. This is book 6 (which honestly I didn’t see that when I requested this). So I didn’t have all the details of the back stories but I don’t think I missed anything. There were enough context clues to get the main points of their pasts and what brought them to the island. Overall, it is a low drama story. There are a few things that get resolved. A few things that bothered me: everything was described in excruciating detail, there’s lots of food and body talk that didn’t sit right with me. It seemed like they were all obsessed with their weight. Not necessarily their health but just their weight and appearance. It felt toxic. If it was part of just Iris’s story line then it would make sense but for them all to be a little too obsessed with weight loss was a big turn off for me.
Christmas on the Island by Maggie Miller is a quiet, cozy Christmas story with sunny island vibes. The characters are sweet and it's a pleasant, but forgettable, story.
The story captures the laidback, summery Christmas vibes of an island vacation. Overall I prefer my Christmas stories snowy rather than tropical, but I didn't deduct any points for that - that's a personal preference and I knew from the start what this story would be (it's in the title).
The characters feel like real people and I like how real the relationships feel, especially those between the characters in their golden years - I thoroughly enjoy golden romance.
That said, not much at all happens in the story, making it forgettable. I love cozy, slice of life stories - but if there isn't going to be much external conflict I expect internal conflict (and ideally some wit/humor/excitement/something). This story would have been elevated by meaningful conflict - I can't say there was no conflict because there were tiny moments, but it was stuff like 'should I cheat on my diet? No' answered exactly that quickly and without any complexity or real strife. We were walked through the step by step calls for making dinner reservations, etc. and in general the mundane moments that are normally glossed over in narratives were all included because this book *is* just mundane moments.
It does still earn three stars and not less because it was cozy and sweet, I just hoped for a little more.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the author, publisher and net galley for an advanced copy of this book. I had never read this author before so didn’t know what to expect. It was an adorable story. I’m excited to go back and read some of the others in the serious. I love a good heartwarming Christmas story.
Thank you, Net Galley, and Spotify for an audio copy of Christmas on the Island.
I liked this. Heartwarming, with all the friends and family getting back together.
