The Wonderful World of James Herriot AUDIO by James Herriot put a smile on my face. As a hug fan of both the books and the television show, it was fun to learn where some of the stories came from, which is exactly what this book provided. The actual story was told, followed by words from one of the books. Rosie Page was the talented narrator with much of the book, but James was read by Nicholas Ralph, who plays him on the PBS drama. Anna Madelely, Helen on television, joined in where appropriate. I am not a reader of non-fiction normally, but this audiobook surpassed any expectation I might have had. The James Herriot books are so cozy and informative to begin with that this just adds to the myth. Listening to it was a gift. If I could give it more than five stars, I would. There is no more to say.

I was invited to listen to an audio ARC of The Wonderful World of James Herriot by MacMillan Audio, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #MacMillanAudio #JamesHerriot. #NicholasRalph #AnnaMadeley #RosiePage #TheWonderfulWorldOfJamesHerriot

Delightful, engaging and a peaceful listen-- truly a wonderful way to enter the world of Herriot. The narration of Anna Madeley, Nicholas Ralph & Rosie Page add depth to this already classic sampling of Herriot's works. Animal lovers will delight in the tales of this small-town vet while any reader would adore the setting of a much simpler time in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales locale of the English countryside. Highly recommend!

The Wonderful World of JamesHerriot by James Herriot
I loved the earlier James Herriot books but this one seems like a big mistake in my opinion. First, I listened to a long and tedious introduction. Then the body of book is presented in a very strange manner. First there is a narrative version of the story being told and then there is a first person version of the story. All the stories I listened to were just snippets from previous books. Honestly, I did not get very far before giving up on the experience which was a big disappointment. Narration was perfectly fine but a good narrator cannot save a book that should not have been compiled in this way.

New Release Bulletin! Calling all fans of the BBC's All Creatures Great and Small!
This charming, heartwarming book released today! I got hold of an ARC to read in advance, and I fully recommend it. I listened to the audiobook, which the stars of the show read, and listening to "James's voice" read the stories warmed my soul.
This book combines all of James Herriot's autobiographical fiction about his life as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales with the true story of his life, so it reads more like a topical memoir.
For anyone who loves the show but doesn't think he'll read all 7 of his books, this would be a great place to start. It would also be a lovely Christmas gift for anyone who loves the tv show, animals, British history/historical fiction, or wholesome wonder at days gone by 😇

As someone who recently feel in love with the joys and wonders of Darrowby while watching the newest All Creatures Great and Small, I was so excited at the opportunity to listen to this audiobook before it's release date (Thanks Macmillan Audio!)! The fact that the audiobook is narrated by Nicholas Ralph and Anna Madeley really makes this even more incredible for lovers of the show!
This was quite an interesting listen and definitely something a little outside of my normal reads because it is non-fiction with a dash of fiction (so there is something for everyone) and a focus on the veterinary practices. At first, it was a little confusing because Nicholas Ralph would narrate sections about James Herriot (a fictional character created by Alfred White) and Anna Madeley would narrate sections that were the nonfictional aspect, talking about Alfred White and the true stories behind the beloved characters and plots of the amazing James Herriot books!
Definitely a great read/listen for anyone who loves the All Creatures Great and Small universe!

James Herriot was a favorite after my grandmother gifted me his books during my childhood. This book, a look at his veterinary life via his children, shares stories of the original people, animals, and stories behind the stories told in his original books. There are some revisits and excerpts from the original stories with reminiscences from his children about how the story came to be, if the characters were amalgamations of a few people, or some of the reactions of people who were included. It's an interesting way to create a biography in a way that honors J.A. Wight and his alter ego of James Herriot.

If you are a lover of the James Herriot books, then you simply must read or listen to this comprehensive and heartwarming overview. The book follows the life of the author behind the books as well as his family and gives excerpts from the books along the way. The audio production is very well done by Anna Madeley providing narration and Nicholas Ralph the excerpts from the books. Both are from the PBS series and will be familiar voices to those who have loved that recent production. Highly recommended to animal lovers!

Thank you to Macmillan Audio for an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Wonderful World of James Herriot, A Charming Collection of Classic Stories.
This audiobook edition is read by Nicholas Ralph and Anna Madeley. I remember seeing James Herriot around the house as child, but never actually read the stories. I was intrigued because of all of the attention and recognition this book has amassed. I got a win-win with this version. Not only did I get to experience the best of his stories coming to life, there were tales interspersed to include his life and his family.
I thoroughly enjoyed this charming and captivating collection of stories written by Herriot that depict his life and adventure is a veterinarian. I highly recommend this delightful collection to all!!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.

What a fantastic book. I love all the background information of the real man who wrote the books and then to have clips of the stories in the book. The writer did a wonderful job of putting it all together in a way that made you feel like part of Yorkshire family. This is a perfect addition to the collection of stories by James Alfred Wright aka James Herriot. Highly recommend this to anyone who loves the books and shows.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the free audiobook in exchange for my honest review. This is narrated by Anna Madeley, Nicholas Ralph, and Rosie Page who do a fantastic job of making these stories come to life.

I am a huge fan of All Creatures Great and Small on PBS so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to listen to the book that tells the stories behind that series! I loved hearing about the actual people behind the characters in this show, as told by their children. This is such a wonderful book and fantastic listening experience!!

HIghly recommend!

I grew up reading all of James Herriot books and when I saw this audiobook, I had to listen to it. As I was listening to the first few minutes, I recognized the narrators' voices. Looked them up and sure enough, they are the actors that play James Herriot and Mrs. Hall on the PBS Masterpiece show, Nicholas Ralph and Anna Madeley. They are marvelous in narrating the numerous stories of James, the Dales, and the veterinary practice. This book is wonderful as it brings to life many stories from the numerous books James Herriot wrote and gives little behind the scenes explanations to connect to the real life people that characters were based on in the stories. It also explains the real men, Alf Wight and Donald Sinclair, behind the characters and their families through the years. The introduction by the children of James, Jim Wight and Rosie Page provides a lovely background to their father's practice and books.
If you are a fan of James Herriot, or just an animal lover, I highly recommend this audiobook!
Thank you Macmillan Audio and Net Galley for a complimentary copy of the audiobook. All opinions expressed are my own.

Loved The Wonderful World of James Herriot!

Admittedly I've only read All Creatures Great and Small (which in US combined James Herriot's first two novels) and All Things Bright and Beautiful (which combined the second two novels). If read subsequent books by James Herriot, I neglected to capture them on GoodReads.

The version of The Wonderful World reviewed was the audio version, which captures clips of prior audio segments and interweaves them with narrative that explains how the novels relate to the actual experiences of the actual veterinarian surgeon James Alfred Wight. The book provides comparison to stories in the books and then provides many names of the actual patients and their owners; and often how the owners responded to "Alf" once the books were published.

Twice a week fans were able to meet the author in person and line up around the block for autographs and to shake his hand.

Personally I like books to progress sequentially, but this book jumped around a bit because it was organized by topic. It didn't bother me to a huge extent. There was a little bit of overlap at times. Maybe that will be ironed out as I reviewed "the advance release audio" version.

Overall, the book was about 12.25 hours long and I just loved it. Since I had only read the first two US novels (or the first 4 books), I always wondered what happened once the good (vet) doctor had gone off to war. Well ... now I know. If you've loved any of James Herriot's prior books (and really, who hasn't), don't miss this one!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advance release copy of the audiobook available in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for approving my NetGalley request.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC.

I have loved James Herriot’s books for as long as I can remember. While they were the reason I did not want to be a vet, they did bring me joy and occasionally a good cathartic cry. Herriot’s work was also a deciding factor in my semester abroad in England.

This is a compilation work, narrated by the actor currently playing Herriot in the recent series. The compilation themes stories from earlier publications, giving context to each story and explaining how the truth of Alf White’s experiences align with those of his creation James Herriot in these creative semi-nonfiction stories.

For those that wonder, was TrickyWoo a real dog? Did the young vet really have to lay on the floor as a cow crushed his arm in the birth canal while wearing formal wear? Was Sigfried really that erratic?… Here is the answer, but without destroying the magic created by the nom de plume of James Herriot.

🎧4⭐️

Read by Anna Madeley ( Mrs Hall in the latest drama) , Nicholas Ralph (James Herriot in the drama) and Rosie Page (James Herriott’s daughter)

This is one for the die hard fans who are interested in the facts, names and places behind the stories. The stories are a collection from the original books. Still had me chuckling on many an occasion, with an occasional tear too.

If you have been introduced to the series from the recent tv shows, I’d read the original books or audiobooks.
Needless to say if you are devoted die hard fan then you’ll want to add this to your collection.

I hadn’t realised just how many books worldwide that he’d sold. I especially loved the catch up of all the main characters at the end. I must say it bought a tear to my eye.

I give 4.5 stars (rounded up to 5) for this wonderful book. This is a collection of such delightful, charming, and heartwarming stories! I wasn't sure how much new material I'd get, since I was already familiar with All Creatures Great and Small - so I was pleasantly surprised to learn the "true" stories behind the (already-mostly-true) tales of "James Herriot" (vet James Alfred Wight), and even to read stories I hadn't seen before. My only complaint is that sometimes, the transitions between stories felt a bit disjointed. However, most stories were united under a common chapter heading, and I always felt like "James'" narration ended at just the right point in a story. The man was truly a gifted writer. I also really enjoyed hearing the introduction from Rosie Page, and hearing the two different narrators reading Wight's background information and Herriot's stories. This audiobook will delight animal fans and people who love wholesome family stories (even those who have read Herriot's work previously).

Note: Some stories may be upsetting for sensitive readers; there are stories about animal reproduction and there are animals who sadly die.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan for the ability to listen to this audiobook for free; I was not required to provide a positive review in exchange.

This was an absolute delight. I can’t tell you how many times I read James Herriot’s books as a kid, but I can tell you my paperbacks were well-worn. Revisiting the stories was like a warm hug. I especially enjoyed the audio and narrators as it was easy to differentiate between the new background information we’re getting and the favorite stories being told from the previous books. I loved hearing about favorite characters and animals along with stories about the real people behind them.
I think anyone that already loves these stories or someone new to them would love the audiobook and I highly recommend it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early listen. All opinions are my own.
