As with all Cathy Kelly stories, Sisterhood has a focus on female characters who find themselves at crossroads in their lives. For Lou, she discovers a secret her mother has always kept hidden and a realisation that her husband, employer and mother treat her like a doormat. For her sister Toni, a shock confession from her husband sends her reeling.
Together with a young hitchhiker they picked up in Ireland (I couldn’t see any point having this character in the story), the sisters take off to Sicily, leaving their relationships temporarily behind. While there, they reassess their lives and return to Ireland determined to make changes.
Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins Australia for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this light read.
Lou and Toni are sisters. At Lou’s 50th birthday, she finds out a shocking secret that her mother has always kept from her. It changes everything for her. She’s not who she always thought she was. She has always been a people pleaser with those in her life. She knows that her relationships with her daughter and her mum need to change.
Toni is also facing a crisis in her life. The two sisters take off on a life changing trip around Ireland’s wild coastline and further on to sun soaked Sicily. The scenes described in Sicily were glorious.
The story focuses on secrets, sisterly love, jealousy, family relationships, and drama. I found this to be an engaging and fast paced read. The revelation of secrets make both Lou and Toni reassess their lives and realise what is important to both of them.
I would recommend this book to others. Many thanks to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
From its intriguing beginning, where Lou is distraught about something that happened at her 50th birthday to the fitting ending, I was totally captured by this book . For a lot of women, we can see parts of ourselves in Cathy Kelly's characters. This was a story about letting yourself be used and finding out that that doesn’t have to be the case. The sisters, Lou and Toni had a great relationship and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them, as they learned to stand u p for what was important. Thank you to NetGalley for a chance to preview this book by one of my favourite authors.
