Adventure, romance, betrayal - this medieval story had everything to keep me sated from beginning to end.

Lara is a fiery, headstrong character whose talent for getting into difficult situations makes for a very enthralling plot. When she is pitted against Talon, the smoldering Captain of the Guard, the tension is palpable. They are both very easy to like, despite their flaws and tempers.

The story compellingly weaves their tempestuous relationship amongst a medieval world filled with jealous lords, fierce fighting and daily life in a keep. The world felt authentic and well-researched, and I had no trouble traveling back into my favourite time period.

As a fan of Elizabeth Chadwick and Diana Gabaldon, I love a story with strong women, handsome men ( alas fictional), and moments of steamy delight. This book did not disappoint and filled the gap.

The plot was kept fresh with moments of action alongside calmer scenes depicting everyday medieval life, and was filled with twists and turns right to the very end.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable read, a great historical fiction novel and was easy to get swept up into. I already have the second book and can’t wait to read it.

I am not a historical or regency fan usually. I just get bogged down with all the thees and thous. But this story had a great balance of the kings language and contemporary. The characters were well developed from the beginning so it was easy to get attached and drawn into the story. You wanted Talon and Lara together. The plot was one that was simple, the reader kind of knew the progression but it felt fresh so it still left you wondering what would happen next. I love the fact that the author included plenty of animals especially one that is part of the main plot line. Great story all around.

I enjoyed reading about Lara and Talon - all of their interactions were set in a band of loyalty and the steps to their HEA were just beautiful.
