I was looking forward to this as I love the chance to be creative. Unfortunately, this is just the introduction pamphlet and that’s not enough to go on. The pamphlet was well written but it’s a pamphlet so I don’t know.
I was expecting far more than just the instructions!
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
Just to start of - this is not a ‘normal’ book, rather an introduction to an art game or art practise. But, still the intro to the cards is written beautifully, captures the attention of the reader while also giving a backstory to what it is and why is it.
I am intrigued to see the cards, would be interesting to use the prompts in class or even for my own art projects!
This ARC is the 9-page introductory booklet included in this kit. Even though the description makes it sound like this includes the cards, the booklet itself doesn't offer very much in terms of giving us ideas for art projects.
The booklet opens with Duchamps's 1917 urinal art. I personally dislike that so much of the modern art discourse keeps coming back to that piece. Even the booklet itself immediately admits that he did nothing to construct the piece, aside from turning the urinal he bought upside down and signing it. If that's the kind of idea that these cards will try to inspire, I think I will pass.
The publisher has made available for review only the introductory booklet and not any of the actual prompt cards. Given that they make up the substance of this product, that makes it difficult to determine how well they delivered what readers expect.
With that said, I can make some educated guesses based on the intro alone. This appears to be less a serious study of technique and more an exploration of what it actually means to make art. An invitation to be creative. As elementary teachers might think of it, these appear to be more about "process art" than about "producing" art. It looks like a fun tool for those of us who need a little bit of direction in order to not just be floundering with no idea how to begin, but without being too rigid or formal -- or making us feel like we can't measure up to the "real" art the book or prompt or teacher expects.
Whether or not the cards effectively accomplish this, I can't say, having not seen them.
I don't understand why the introduction to the cards would be here for a review without the cards. I expected the book to include the art instructions, but was disappointed.
I received an eARC of this book, thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher and what was available to me was an introduction, and not the whole book.
Thanks.
I seriously think that the whole was not provided and so I couldn’t find the information the book would provide me to review it.
I found the introduction part only.
I can't just review the instructions please attach the cards and I will edit my review. many thanks.
This sounded cool but the preview is just for the instructions and doesn't include the cards. Unfortunately, that didn't give much to rate it on...sorry!
