I liked the way Beyond Getting By focused on helping people who aren't beginners in finance, but still need advice.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to be able to read and review this book!
3/5
I've followed Holly's youtube channel for quite some time, so I was excited to read this one. Unfortunately there simply wasn't enough material here to give this book a full 5 stars. It was simply okay; a good journaling practice about your thoughts around money if you've never spent a second of your life thinking about finances. But otherwise, for the majority of people and especially for those who follow her channel, this is elementary-level material. I love books with gorgeous artwork and the art was pleasing to look at, but there were simply too many pages devoted to full-page graphics and journaling content. Not quite what I expected, unfortunately.
I was delighted to see that The Financial Diet were bringing out a second book that went beyond the basics of personal finance primers - as someone who's been interested in this topic for several years, books on the basics are no longer relevant to me, but I still appreciate guidance and opinions. It did not disappoint, exploring how to use your money to help you thrive, and move beyond bare-minimum standards for quality of life.
It is US-centric so as someone in the UK I found some parts were relevant to me, but I know enough about my own country's personal finance rules and opportunities to fill in the gaps.
I have enjoyed The Financial Diet for years and this book is no exception. While it isn't a "money" book in the traditional sense, it is such a helpful guide for prioritizing, not being scared of money, and feeling in control of your money situation
The tips and suggestions can be applied no matter where you are in your life with your finance. Easy to follow and there are so many references and resources at the end of each chapter.
Beyond Getting By is a fantastic book that feels well-researched, well-written, and easily accessible. The gorgeous illustrations make this book feel a lot less intimidating. I often feel insecure and intimidated about finances but this book really made them accessible to me!
This book is such a refreshing and empowering guide to financial independence. This book is perfectly timed in todays day and age where we all feel like the world is running past us without a moment to breathe, where once we needed 55K and now we need 70K and now to get by we need 115K. This book gives great advice that is tailored for todays time and is full of wisdom and focusses on achieving meaningful and achievable goals while living our lives to the fullest without feeling like we are drowning. This book makes one reflect and help redefine what success looks like and helped with prioritizing what truly matters. Overall, "Beyond Getting By" to me is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to getting a much more fulfilling and intentional approach to personal finance and improving our day to day life. Great Job Holly- definitely a good book to pick up and recommend to others.
I thought this was really well written and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I think it will find readers at our library, so we will definitely be purchasing for the collection.
Like all Financial Diet products, this book is a friendly, approachable, and relatable tool for readers to expand on their personal finance education. The audiobook was great and felt like listening to old friends chatting and giving advice. I appreciate the way this book does not give in to hustle culture or trying to make your way to the top - it's about balance, enjoying your life, and doing good.
*Thank you to Crown Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review*
This book is uplifting without being preachy, and brought to light a lot of other financial topics that I hadn't read about previously: things like Dave Ramsey and finances from the view of Christianity, girlboss culture, and the idea of abundance vs overconsumption. Honestly this was perfect for a financial reset! It felt so encouraging to read and I loved that there were worksheets. It felt like every page I was highlighting quotes that stood out to me. I can't wait to put things into practice - you bet I'm doing an audit of my finances and filling out the worksheets!!
A witty and useful look at personal finances after the point where you're no longer struggling. The market on how to get one's personal finances in order is fairly oversaturated, so this book was a welcome change. It's more of a "how to refocus your values" to maximize getting the most out of life. It's an excellent companion piece to the original Financial Diet book.
This book is exactly what I needed. As the title implies, it fills the space left after gaining enough knowledge and power to be financially confident as an individual but unsure what to do next in the face of fledging careers in people management or entrepreneurship, growing relationships or families, or other modern demands on our time.
Get past the forward on the "anti-girl boss" quickly to delve into living abundantly yet not excessively, believing in your worth, and handling the metaphorical "lonely corner office" (so true!), which comes across as if you are listening to a trusted work bestie or a mentor you respect within your industry.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
I love the progression of not just staying in a mindset that's really what this book is about I appreciate how they always interweave social context I want to thank the financial diet team for sending me a copy for my opinion
I’ve followed TFD for years it was fun to see their practical approach to personal finance in one book. This definitely has something for you in whatever stage of finances you’re in. I enjoyed the prompts and exercises they included!
Allows you to spend time thinking of how money, time, and energy is spent within your life; taking stock of current spending of these 3 pieces and altering your budget for these. I liked that it went further than money, as this isn’t the only commodity that needs to be considered and planned for.
This is workbook heavy which I was not expecting and made the read feel very stop and go. I was only able to read this book when I had the time and energy to truly reflect which made it take a while to get through.
Great read for guided reflection, not a great read for sitting by the pool.
I quite enjoyed this personal finance book by The Financial Diet team. It's a great introduction book to folks looking to be more financially-savvy. Topics are introduced in an approachable way and each chapter includes an activity/space for self-reflection to practice applying principles to your own life. The book itself was also attractive and well designed.
I think overall this is a lovely book. I liked some of the chapters in advice, but I felt like I just...wanted more? Like, this felt like a really nice start, but it didn't dive as deeply as I wanted.
Though the workbook activities were super helpful and I'll probably pick up a copy so I can try them out on my own once the book is out.
Thank you to Currency and NetGalley for a chance to read and review!
4/5 stars! This was an easy to follow read despite the complex topics presented thanks to the author’s clear voice. I felt like Holly was speaking directly to me in a casual conversation rather than being instructed or lectured on a subject. I loved the topics chosen, the order they were presented in, and the various question spaces to prompt further thinking and planning. I think this book is a massive aid to someone newer to the financial wellness space but even those accustomed to hearing about these ideals will still take comfort in the way the book presents them.
Feel-good guidelines for living an intentional life with enough.
I got this as a netgalley arc in exchange for an honest review. It's a quick read (3-5 hours) and gives lots of advice and exercises on how to identify what brings true meaning and joy to your life and how to cultivate those things.
The message is vehemently anti-hustle culture and rejects the #girlboss as an ideal that was ever going to truly serve us well. Instead, the author(s) focus on what we've learned from living through the career girl trials and the pandemic: you can only achieve so much happiness with an amount of money. You must figure out how to build a community that will last, identify activities (solo and collective) that can add a creative flavor to your days, and yes, still plan for a future while experiencing the present.
The ladies of TFD have our back, and their own. Their financial content is accessible and stimulating, and the same can be said about this newest book.
