For a novella sized book, this had everything - strong characters, second chances, awesome kids, love, steam, emotions.....
Harcourt hurt Eliza when she was very young and set her on a path of pain and degradation. Over time she meets someone who cares for her gets her out of the pit and makes her a wealthy woman. But Harcourt after 30 years meets her and again hurts her. In desperation, she reaches out to Mrs. Lyon to get married and low behold who should be her groom but Harcourt.
They get married and over time, Harcourt sees what an amazing woman Eliza truly is and the live he felt for her is once again renewed.
He works hard for her love ans trust and they have their hea 30 years after their first meeting.
I enjoyed this book about second chances for mature adults. Both parties had a lot happen to them before their getting back together. The heroine really had a very hard life but still felt fairly optimistic. The hero really didn’t think things through much when he was younger and even later he spoke first and thought later. I enjoyed the twins who really were helpful. It was a good read. I received an ARC for an honest review.
Secrets, Vengeance, Justice, Engrossing Love Story:
This book certainly opens with a flurry of shocking surprises that captured my attention right off the bat.
I was engrossed from the beginning with this dramatic story and the deeply involved characters that take us on a ride that is filled with anger, desire, love, compassion, intriguing confessions, friendships and family.
Harcourt and Betty led us back to the Lyons Den where Lady Dove Lyon sets Harcourt up in a not so honest game of chance which leads the reader into a deeply emotional journey that brought out the best in the two main characters along with many of others. I especially liked Harcourt twin sons, Trixie the maid and I was totally frustrated with Clara until the very rewarding ending for all of the family.
A really good story that kept attention without any skimming.
Cover: Very handsome to look at.
Lyon of the Ton is the forty-fifth book in the Lyon's Den series. Each book has Mrs. Dove-Lyon and the Lyon's Den as part of the storyline. Each book I have read can be a stand-alone read.
Lady Betty Grey meets with Mrs. Dove-Lyon looking for a husband with a title. She agrees to marry him sight unseen but has a few requirements of her own.
Harcourt Martingale, fifth Duke of Pittchester, faces bankruptcy. He is bitter from losing his first wife and has no wish for a wife. But he needs to marry a woman who has money in order to secure his sons future. Harcourt agrees to a game of chance and wins an anonymous bride who insists that they meet at the altar then proceed to the bedchamber within one hour of the ceremony which would occur at the infamous Lyon's Den.
When Betty and Harcourt see each other, they are both shocked but agree to go through with the ceremony. They each resolve to make the best of this new agreement. Betty has many secrets that she is determined to keep. Harcourt dares to dream of forgiveness for what he feels he left her no choice in Betty's past. When faced with the hardships Betty has incurred will Harcourt be the man Betty remembers from her youth.
I really enjoy this series. I love the Lyon's Den theme that runs throughout each book that connects them all. In spite of the many different authors that have written the books they could easily have been written by one. They all are able to capture the essence of the Lyon's Den which makes this series so fantastic.
Most disturbing first chapter in a book I've read in a long time. Took me 3/4 of the way through the book before I could even attempt to like the lead male, Harcourt, but I ended up loving him and his devotion to Eliza. I loved her from the get go, but Harcourt was so snooty I didn't want her to love him. But Bessie Dove-Lyon does know best so I kept going. And I'm so glad I did, what a book. So many layers to the characters, so much heartbreak, and to get to their HEA was a roller coaster of emotion. I felt the need to slap someone a time or four, but they all found their way.
I'll be looking for stories on Clara, Cornelius and Nathanial. Emily Royal has a way of weaving a tale that makes you wanna go all in and shut out the world.
The story is a great addition to the numerous other unique matches made by Mrs. Dove-Lyon. The widow does it again with her match-making between Harcourt and Betty. One thing that I truly loved about the story is that they are much older and have a previous history that goes back about thirty years. I loved the story and the strength of Betty’s will that enabled her to endure early hardships and a deep loss. The story is well developed and very entertaining. I loved the twins, Cornelius and Nathaniel and their easy acceptance and love for Betty. There are surprises along the way that makes for great reading. Wonderful story that is worth reading.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and are voluntarily leaving a review.
Betty, a widow whose tarnished past may someday soon come to light, decides to marry a respectable man from the ton. She has money, so she goes to Mrs. Dove-Lyon to have her pick out some man for her to immediately marry. Harcourt needs money for his dukedom and agrees to a sight unseen marriage. Imagine their surprise when they find themselves each married to someone they know and despise. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
Emily Royal's "Lyon of the Highlands" is my favorite of the Lyon's Den series (which says a lot because I have really liked just about every book from this anthology/series) - and "Lyon of the Ton" comes very close to taking over that #1 spot for me. I loved the character of Betty and the way she overcame so much adversity and never lost her ability to be kind and love with all of her heart. Obviously it took a little longer to come to like Harcourt - especially given that when we first meet him he is telling Betty that he could never marry someone of her class but would love to have her as his mistress. And then he carried his bitterness over three decades and humiliated her in front of a large group of people. But he comes around quickly once he is reunited with her and completely redeems himself by the end of the story. I loved how quickly Nathaniel and Cornelius took to her and basically became her defenders against anyone who might be cruel to her. I liked that Clara didn't immediately take to her because, although it was heartbreaking for Betty, it was realistic given what she had been through (who knows what she had been told about her mother). It also made it that much more rewarding when she finally embraces Betty has her mother. I would love more stories with these characters to find out what happens with their kids when they start looking for their own spouses.
I thoroughly enjoyed this 'magical' historical romance. Yes there is some steam... but I think it was very tastefully done. But should you not agree, you could easily skim those paragraphs, and still enjoy a well written mystery regency romance story that will most definitely keep you turning those pages. I did fall in love, just a little bit, with the lead characters. I think you will, too . I am happy to say it was a good, fun, attention grabbing read.
