Ich weiß ehrlich gesagt nicht, wie ich dieses Buch bewerten soll, da ich es aufgrund relativ kurzer Ausleihdauer (ohne Verlängerung) nicht lesen konnte.
The magic-lore behind this book seems to be driven towards a younger crowd and sounds juvenile in a way. I wasn't able to get past the the summary of the book on Kindle Unlimited and found that this wasn't for me.
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy. I really enjoyed this and will be getting copies for my shop.
Magic, romance, and fantasy blend together in a magnificent tale that I could not put down. I loved every page and cannot wait for book two.
This book wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't badly written. I had a hard time getting into it. I did go in with high expectations based on the blurb, but they just weren't quite met.
This was a really fun read for me I really enjoyed it and read it very quickly and definitely recommend for others as well
Thanks NetGalley for supplying an advanced e-copy! I was so excited to start this book.
We start out with Sara, an ER doctor who is unusually adept in her work. After years of cultivating a lackluster dating history with unavailable bad boys, she now spends most of her free time hanging out with her cat, Scarface, and her best friend, Nina. At least, that was her life until a mysterious but totally hot guy walks into her emergency department. Oh, and he's a bad boy. His name is Leszek and he is the God of the Forest, trapped here on Earth to protect his people. He is immediately drawn to Sara and all but forces her to use her skills as a doctor to aid the magical community also trapped in this realm.
It started strong. Sara was a fabulous character who is fierce and has a weak spot for helping others. At times she came across as wishy-washy, especially in her romantic life. She was sometimes self-aware of this, but sometimes it felt like the author just needed plot tension. Sara's best friend Nina is a bombshell and I almost wish we had more of her! Leszek is a solid idea of a character, but didn't have much plot outside wanting Sara and keeping her safe. I would rather have gotten to know him more slowly and understand who he is outside of his infatuation with Sara.
The pacing of this book was also a little wishy-washy. Some parts seem to go on far too long, and others move too fast where it takes me a moment to understand what's happening in the story. The plot revolved around Sara and Leszek coming to terms with their mutual attraction, but their romance was a bit annoying to me. However, I really do like Sara and if we are able to see more Leszek's personality shine without his main focus being on Sara, I would love to read more.
Also, and this has no bearing on my rating, the sex scenes did not quite do it for me. They often involve partial-shifts into animal forms with fur and antlers and animal parts. It's one of those things that may do it for other people, just not me personally. There is also a small mafia subplot that didn't add anything for me, but others might enjoy it.
Magic and Medicine by Olena Nikitin is a paranormal urban spicy romantasy with everything you want and more. Slavic mythology, vampires, werewolves, and witches, with a mafia aspect. It was a delight to read!
Our fmc, Sara, an emergency department doctor, is suddenly immersed in a realm of magic when she sees a dead man come back to life after being stabbed with Chernobog's dagger. And when this man's boss is unable to use his compulsion on her with his magic, she is thrust into a world where magic is real, and she has the potential to kill gods.
The narrative unfolds with an exceptional and distinctive storyline, boasting a rich tapestry of well-crafted characters. Everything about this book is simply extraordinary.
This book just wasn't for me; I had terrible issue trying to get it on my kindle app, read it through the net galley app. I was bored most of the time.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishers and of course the author for gifting me this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
First book in the new series 'Amber Legends' and this book was a great read! As a nurse this book synopsis immediately drew me, as I was thinking what would I do in that situation if a deceased victim of a stabbing suddenly opened his eyes! Fantastic paranormal fantasy romance overflowing with magic. I can't wait for book 2.
I almost cannot review this title because reading it was very, very challenging.
It all began a bit painfully when it wouldn’t appear in my Kindle after multiple attempts. I finally read it on Netgalley’s app, which certainly didn’t do it any favors-with a ton of wonky formatting.
But the book itself….from the first page, the writing is stilted and confusing. There are myriad mistakes throughout and errors that caused basic plot confusion and were extremely distracting.
A heavy edit is a must do for this book (although I suppose it’s a bit late).
There is some (read: very little) world building, so following along was disorienting.
The characters were ok. The FMC was feisty and funny, and the alpha male MMC was your typical “touch her and die” alpha. But I found them just meh as a couple, and the sex scenes were cringy to me, not well written at all. The mafia bit? Totally unnecessary.
My apologies to those who really liked it, but this was a no for me.
Sara, a dedicated emergency department physician, finds herself thrust into a captivating world of mysticism when she valiantly saves the life of a wounded werewolf. This courageous act sets in motion a fateful entanglement as her irresistible attraction to Leszek, a vampire charged with safeguarding the enchanting Nether in the heart of a mystical forest, pulls her deeper into a perilous web of danger.
In Olena Nikitin's spellbinding novel, 'Magic and Medicine,' I was transported to a realm where Norse mythology interweaves seamlessly with an array of fantastical creatures, including vampires, werewolves, and witches. The narrative's vibrant world-building, while beguiling, occasionally left me in a state of pleasant confusion, especially in its portrayal of the enigmatic antagonists, who appeared as elusive figures within the tapestry.
One indelible moment that stirred my heart was Leszek's ardent declaration, 'I burn for you,' a phrase that seemed to suspend time itself, casting an enchanting spell over the narrative. The inclusion of evocative illustrations within the pages was a unique and enriching touch, bringing an extra layer of immersion to the reading experience. The narrative's clever infusion of humor served to humanize the characters and enhance their relatability, adding a delightful element to the story.
All in all, 'Magic and Medicine' was a splendid, albeit at times bewildering, journey into a world where magic, mythology, and romance converged in an unforgettable blend. I wholeheartedly rate it with a perfect 5 out of 5 stars, a testament to its ability to captivate and transport the reader into a realm where the ordinary and extraordinary harmoniously coexist.
Danger doesn’t lurk in the shadows. It barges in and smacks you in the face. After years of working in the Emergency Department, Sara thought nothing could surprise her, but when the deceased victim of a stabbing opened his eyes and demanded his knife back, she knew her life had taken a bizarre turn.
This isn't really my kind of book, but I found myself enjoying it.
Sara’s life is turned upside down when the dead patient on her ER tables sits up and talks to her. His Lord comes looking for him expecting to be able to wipe her memory but it doesn’t work. Sara has always felt different, but did understand why and her meeting with Leszek leads to many revelations. There is an instant spark between them, but they are both wary. He is very controlling and she’s had enough of this in her life. He has been alone for so long, he’s not sure he knows how to let someone in. They are caught up in a war between light and dark magic and Sara seems to be the key to e everything.
I loved how all their friends were there for them and loved the relationships that were built between the worlds.
I liked how strong, wild, passionate and desperate Leakey was. I liked how strong, loving and loyal Sara was but thought that her character was a bit inconsistent. One minute she wants nothing to do with him, then she loves him? I got that she was confused, but did not like this side of the story. I also was not a huge fan of the big battle scene. It did not understand why they did some of the things they did.
I liked a lot of things about this story, but also disliked a few as well, so I’m not sure if I would read more of the series.
While I appreciate the opportunity to read this, unfortunately I guess I'm not? I sent it to my kindle a few times and it doesn't appear to ever have arrived and now it's archived. :\
Sara, an emergency department doctor, is thrust into a world of magic when she saves the life of a wounded werewolf. This newfound knowledge entangles her in a perilous web of danger because of her attraction to a vampire named Leszek. Leszek is guarding the magic of the Nether in the forest domain and falling for this human girl against his better judgement.
“Magic and Medicine” by Olena Nikitin was a fantastic and confusing book. I really liked the Norse mythology that’s mixed with other fantasy monsters like vampires, werewolves, and witches. The world building is confusing sometimes, especially with the antagonists which seem like an afterthought. I loved it when Leszek said, “I burn for you”, I think my heart stopped for several minutes. I also like the pictures in the book, I thought it was a unique touch. The humor in the book was good and added to the relatability of the characters. 5 out of 5 stars, I really enjoyed it.
The description of this book was super fun but unfortunately it ended up being confusing and hard to read at times. There was essentially no world building which made it hard to stay invested in the story. In my opinion, for a fantasy/paranormal novel to be successful it needs very clear descriptions of the world and the creatures within it. Vampires, werewolves, witches and gods are always written differently depending on the author, and there were no clear descriptions of any of them throughout this book. There were also many names that would be mentioned with no explanation as to who they were or their relationship to Sara or Leszek.
As for the mafia component, I didn’t think it was necessary. There was enough going as is, and tense relations with the Russians just seemed like too much. I also would have loved some background on the relationship between humans and magical creatures.
Overall, this story could have been interesting but it needs some major editing and revising.
Leszek is called to clean up the mess a vampire made in the hospital. He couldn't make the pretty doctor, Sara, forget about his existence... He's intrigued by her magic and person....
I like the paranormal world in this book. It's an interesting idea. Sara and Leszek have good chemistry together. An entertaining book.
Thanks to the publisher for the arc.
I will start this review off by saying that I appreciated the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book from the authors.
With that said, that is one of the only positive things I took away from reading Magic and Medicine.
This might be a little all over the place, so bear with me as I try to go through my scribble of notes…
The core idea for the story intrigued me. The description of the book sounded unique, and it’s what initially drew me to want to read it. However, whatever plot was described was completely lost in grammatical errors, sloppy writing, (example: the FMC calling the MMC by name, then a page later stating she doesn’t even know his name), and little to no world building.
I’ll be honest, I had no idea what was going on for more than half the book. There was no buildup, and everything was extremely rushed. There was no time to get to know the characters before we are thrust into this world that, even now, I could not describe to you. We are only told it’s in Poland and that magic and magical creatures exist.
The sex scenes were very, VERY hard to get through. They were awkward and not written well at all.
The chemistry between the FMC and the MMC was non-existent, but if you enjoy a MMC that claims a woman as his before he even really knows her, this might be for you.
There were TONS of info-dumps that attempted to world build, but it was like reading a language you aren’t familiar with. I was left scratching my head every other page.
1.5/5 stars, bumped up to 2 for the general idea of the story. It could have been good, but the execution was terrible.
