Darling story of how a day this little girl was spending with her big sister went from fun to rainy to fun again. Sweet.
Big Sister, Long Coat is a super cute kids book that teaches 2 important lessons: that siblings can be your best friend and that sometimes plans have to change but that can end up being a great thing. Very cute story and fun drawings.
**Thanks to the authors and publisher for the e-arc I received via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.**
When everything appears to go wrong, a nurturing big sister does more than salvage an outing with her little sister — she creates what are sure to be sweet memories. Charming.
I love charming children's books, but this one just didn't hit me well.
For one, what's with the "long coat"? I figured it was going to be something magical, or at the very least we'd find that it represented something cool, like safety or trust. But no, it's not even mentioned. We just see the big sister wearing it.
I believe the message we're supposed to take away from this book, with weirdly sparse and not at all lyrical text, is that when you're with the ones you love, anything can be worthwhile and even fun.
The author and illustrator of this book complement one another so well. The visuals give extra meaning to the text of this picture book.
A young girl is excited to be noticed by and to spend the day with her big sister. However, things don’t go as expected. Will it be a day of disappointment or…could it all be okay? Young kids will enjoy finding out when they hear this sweet title.
Many thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
My daughter is an only child so I'm not sure if it was the best idea to let her read this. :) She liked the story though. This would be a great gift for sisters.
I loved this book! The colors and the story. It was so optimistic. My Oregonian students will love this story about going with the flow on a rainy day!
This is a story of changing plans when things don't go the way you want or expect them to. The plot is simple and short. This book would be good for the 3-4yo age group.
Oh dear. Nothing plot, and just dreadful artwork – this one was a hard pass from me. I can't even begin to describe what doesn't happen and why it's so bad.
This picture book was underwhelming. The illustrations were beautiful but the story fell flat. It was not engaging and the writing was plain. It wasn't rhythmic or rhyming which is what I expect from a children's picture book. It didn't capture my 4 year olds attention.
I love the message and illustrations behind this book. It's important to show children how to make the best out of an unexpected situation and to enjoy the moments. The sisterly love is so sweet, it sets a wonderful example to siblings with a larger age gap between them.
The message of the book would've been made easier to understand had there been a bit more text explaining what she was feeling, the places they went instead, etc. Much is left to the reader to interpret and explain.
Thank you to NorthSouth and NetGalley for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
This picture book has a good message but I don’t think it’s as clear as it could be. I like how it focuses on a big sister, little sister day of fun. The message is to try and make the best of difficult or unexpected changes. But, the sentences seemed almost too short and disjointed for the message to come through to a little kid. The illustrations are pretty. I just wish the message was clearer.

Two sisters have plans for a big and special day, But when a storm unexpectedly hits, will the two of them find their day ruined?
I really love the illustration style of this read. It seems to be a combination of colored pencil and watercolors and is whimsical and cute. I enjoyed how the dreary colors of the setting emphasized the people and the sister’s coat.
I went in expecting a bit more from the text of the story, but in this case, the story was told more through the pictures than the text. The text didn’t rhyme and was somewhat serious, matching the tones of the illustrations. I also expected a bit more about the coat based on the title of the book (I’m assuming it’s symbolic, but this is a children’s book after all) and even a bit more regarding the relationship between the sisters. However, I loved the message of this book and was one that I certainly need to be reminded of regularly: even when things don’t go exactly as planned, you can still have a good or even better day than expected.
This was a sweet book that had a good message but could have been a little stronger overall. I still enjoyed it though. My thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for allowing me to read this work, which will be published March 5, 2024. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
As a big sister, I found this very heartwarming and cute. It’s a short and adorable read about a young girl spending the day with her sister. Things don’t go as planned but everything turns out alright. Great lesson for kids to know- plans may change but you can still have fun.
I would have liked if this book were longer. I feel like it takes longer to read the description of the book than to actually read the book.

Very cute title and concept! Love to see a depiction of large sibling age differences -- we've got several in our community. Art style is contemporary and engaging. Will be on the watch for this title for my library!

BRO why am I crying in the club. This book was beyond adorable and it's great for little kids to need to learn how to manage their expectations. It's good to show children that plans may change but that doesn't mean the day is ruined. I also liked the fact that the sibling bond is the focal point here.
The illustrations are lovely and the language used is ideal for young ones.
Big Sister, Long Coat is written by Nelly Buchet and illustrated by Rachel Katstaller.
The story is about two sisters that spend a day together that does not go as expected. But in the end, they still have a good time just being together. Any little sister that gets to spend the day with an older sister is bound to have a good time.
There are about 40 pages in the book and lots of good illustrations used to tell the story. The illustrations are childlike so the kids should love this book.
Cute book! Loved the illustrations & thought they were a little cuter than the story but the story was easy to read & I'm sure little ones would like it!
Do you have a sibling or a bestest friend? A day's outing of big and little sister had plans but the weather made changes to those plans. Yet a good time was had by all through the changes because they could enjoy each other!
The illustrations by Rachel Katstaller are fun, imaginative, clear, and with brilliant colors.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, and especially to a school or teacher or your public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from NorthSouth Books Inc/NorthSouth Books via NetGalley. Thank you!

Sometimes I feel I needed a sister younger or older doesn't matter Cause even when you have caring parents, big sisters are amazing , ask me I'm one.
This is cozy and heartwarming story of two siblings who are out to enjoy a sunny day when their plan to awry as it rains. But when big sisters are there what is there to worry.
