A little girl (the narrator) and her big sister are spending a day out together, but things don't go as planned and the day seems to get increasingly worse until the big sister makes things better in the end.
This was a good story and demonstrated an important lesson for kids and adults to remember: it's never too late to turn a bad day around. It's a very visually pleasing story with a pretty color palette. I also liked the bond between the sisters.
I like how this story unfolds. The little sister says “We were supposed to have the best day.” and then proceeds to talk about all the things that go wrong. How it was so hot her ice cream melted before she could eat it. And then it rained so hard, they had to change their plans. And then the library closed.
But, when you are out with someone you love, who loves you, even bad days turn out to be fun. And that’s the conclusion the little sister makes as well.
A super fun look at how days can be bad and good at the same time.
As the author explained, sometimes that is how things happen. But, even when you have to change your plans, you can still have fun. Cute pictures. Quick fun picture book.
This book is coming out the 5th of March 2024. Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
A simple story with simple art. This book celebrates family in the form of sisterly bonds.
The conclusion felt a bit forced. Even though I liked the message, I would have liked to see it better integrated with the actual story.
This book is visually appealing and would work better as purely a picture book. The writing us so very basic and unimaginative. Children didn't engage with it, there was no story and it was lacklustre.
Thank you NorthSouth Books and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this wonderful book. This highly relatable book for a young reader with lovely pictures is about spending a day with a big sister, exploring, and changing plans. A very fun read!
Little sister, big sister is a story about sisters who are spending the day together in the city. But things don’t go to plan.
This is a beautiful story of the relationship between siblings and coping together when things don’t go as planned. It’s a great lesson in thinking flexibly, adapting when things don’t go our way, and finding the fun in new plans.
The illustrations are bold and dynamic, and the heat and the rain jump off the page, making you really feel the little sister’s frustration!
I think this would be a lovely book for siblings to share with their grownups, encouraging conversation about flexibility and how great it is to have siblings!
Thank you North South Books and NetGalley for a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed are my own.
This is a delightful book, especially if the recipient has a sister. It has a simple but beautifully illustrated story of sisterly love. A delight.
The story is of two sisters spending the day in the city together. But it is hot and crowded and then it turns rainy. They don’t get to do the planned activities but do enjoy their time together. I liked the simple message that sometimes plans need to be adapted or changed, but beyond that there wasn’t much to the story. The illustrations are colorful but because of the styling I couldn’t always tell from the faces if they were happy or sad. The book is positive and simple in its message. I was sent a copy of Big Sister, Long Coat from NorthSouth Books Inc. via NetGalley and I am leaving an honest review
I received a free copy of, Big Sister, Long Coat, by Nelly Buchet, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. At first, it was to hot and crowded, then it started raining, and messed up there plans. This is such a cute story about sisters, how things do not always go as planned, sometimes they turn about even better.
"Big Sister, Long Coat" by Nelly Buchet offers a charming portrayal of sibling love and adaptability, turning setbacks into unexpected adventures. The narrative is simple and engaging, with delightful illustrations.
However, despite the endearing theme, the story sometimes lacks clarity. While it effectively captures the ups and downs of a day with a big sister, I found myself uncertain about the book's overall message. The repetitive nature of plans changing, while reflective of life's unpredictability, left me wanting more depth in the storyline.
In giving it a 3-star review, I appreciate the positive aspects of the book, such as the heartwarming moments and the resilience of the characters. Yet, the occasional confusion about the book's central theme impacted my overall enjoyment. "Big Sister, Long Coat" has its merits, but a clearer narrative could enhance the reader's experience.
Sometimes the day you want isn’t what you get, but if you make the best of your circumstances it can be even better than you expect. What a positive message for children that struggle to manage big feelings like disappointment!
This is a cute children's book about sisters, and how they still have a great time together even when the day doesn't go as expected. I read this with my three year old, who is recently a big sister herself and very excited about books that show the same relationship. She liked the lemur toy and the dogs howling the most. I liked the questions at the end to involve your child more, and the personalized details from the author. There is not overly complicated writing, so it is an easy book to understand for little kids. The illustrations are eye catching and simple, the bright yellow coat against the backgrounds make it easy to spot the sisters. I think this story works well for toddlers and maybe lower elementary school aged kids. I would read more from this author, my daughter enjoyed it! I received this ARC from NetGalley for my opinions.
Big Sister, Long Coat by Nelly Buchet is a story about sister and how events in life may not always go as planned but not to let it ruin the fun you can still have.
I think this would be a good book for early readers as well due to the simple, minimal text on each page. Some words may be a little tricky though!

Things don’t turn out the way the sisters planned in Big Sister, Long Coat, a story about love and flexibility by Nelly Buchet. Big sister has an adventure in store for her little sister. First they go for a walk and have ice cream cones. It is so hot that little sister’s ice cream melts and her legs stick to the bench she is sitting on. Then it starts to rain. The sisters run to the library but it is closed. People watching and a train ride home end their special day together. The delightful, detailed illustrations by Rachel Katstaller add to the charm of this read-aloud children’s book as do the questions the author poses on the last pages. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, NorthSouth Books, Nelly Bucket and Rachel Katstaller for this ARC.
Thank you so much to NorthSouth Books and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
Two sisters have a big day planned together, with many fun activities but the weather gets in the way and makes them constantly keep changing what they had planned on doing.
This was cute, I liked that the big sister was trying to give her little sister the best day ever but it was either too hot or too rainy to do most of the things she was planning on doing with her little sister, I also liked that she still kept trying to find things to do no matter what was going on around them.
I really enjoyed seeing within the illustrations how close the two were, it was so precious and even though the story was short you could see their connection together which was adorable. I liked how protective the older sister was and how much the younger one clearly admired her big sister.
I think this is a sweet picture book that little ones would enjoy especially though ones with siblings as it shows how they can care for each other and have a strong connection with each other. To show that they can still have a great day no matter and even if things aren’t quite as expected as long as they are together that’s what matters.
Thank you publisher for providing me with this Advance Reader Copy! I am glad that I got this book so i could exit myself from reading slump hole. THE ANSWER is reading graphic novel!
So, Big Sister, Long Coat— is telling us 'gotta expect the unexpected, cause when it turns worst we chill and planning another plan to have the best day'
I really enjoyed this beautiful children’s book about the gift of an ordinary day. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the message of sisterly love can’t be beat.
Two sisters set out on an adventure for the day. This is a great book that shows how things might not always end up like you hope. It is important to try and look at the big picture, spending the day with your big sister. I loved the illustrations and I thought the story was cute. It would keep kids' attention. A great addition to my library.
How i missed our moment so badly with my sister. I missed to hanging iut together, share a story, overnight at my home.
Do read it with your kids. Took only 15 minutes to finished the book. Nice illustration that hook kids to read.
I wanted to enjoy this children's book more than I did. I shared it with the grandkids and we weren't really sure what the book was about other than sometimes plans change.
