A super sweet and adorable story about spending the day with your big sister. This was such a cute story about sibling friendship. The artwork was really sweet and the story itself was charming. I would definitely recommend this!
*Thanks Netgalley and NorthSouth Books Inc., NorthSouth Books for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
It's a very cute title and concept which drew me to want to read this book. However, I expected a little more substance and heart. But I appreciated the simplicity and the messages of flexibility, and that you can get through anything when you're with someone you care about. That was sweet.
Big Sister, Long Coat by Nelly Buchet is a colourful picture book about two sisters whose plans to spend the day together do not go exactly to plan. But sometimes things can turn out even better than you expected when you are sharing the time with someone you love.
With charming illustrations, young children will be drawn to this story and its positive message about making the best out of a less than ideal situation.
Many thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books Inc. for an ARC.
Big Sister, Long Coat is a cute story about sisterhood. It wasn’t a fun read, and it was pretty solemn. I’m not sure if that’s how it was supposed to be — somewhat serious, without rhymes, and humorless.
The illustrations were a little amateurish and could use some bright and fun colors to liven up the atmosphere. As it stands, the illustrations were a little depressing in my opinion.
Overall, Big Sister, Long Coat was a sweet story, but not something that I would want to read to my granddaughters or daughters. Three stars.
I was invited to read a DRC from NorthSouth Books through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
Adorable story about a fun day two sisters share together, but their plans unexpectedly change. I’m a little sister to my big sister so I really could relate to the story. I think any young child with a sibling would relate to the story. Nice touch on the discussion questions at the end to spark dialogue and conversation with your students or own child/children to whom you’re reading to. Thank you NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for the Advance Review Copy.

A really nice picture book for little kids! The illustrations are brightly colored, kind of 'quirky'...but quite detailed & very effective & engaging! They're fun to look at closely & find things a sibling/child/reader can relate to....notice the NYPL steps & lions featured, trying to dry off in a public bathroom, a street intersection & surrounding apartments... What a fun book to share with a kid! I liked the positive message at the end......& also liked that the author/publisher ensures that the book is printed on certified FSC paper, & that the author created a nonprofit project to bring books to refugee children. All positive vibes with this book!! Might actually deserve 5 stars!
I received a digital ARC from publisher NorthSouth Books Inc. via NetGalley for review purposes.
This simple little book tells the story of a day when everything goes wrong, but still turns out right. Two sisters are on an outing together, but nothing goes as planned. Between bad weather, long lines and other problems, big sister has to keep changing those plans. With Buchets’ sweet text and Katstaller’s watercolor illustrations, the book tells a story of sisterly love.
I received a temporary e-book for review from NorthSouth Books, but I can honestly recommend this sweet story for any little one with siblings.
Adorable illustrations with delightful details, and a beautiful storyline about two sisters enjoying each other’s company. As a parent of two sisters and a sister of a sister myself, I related to the story on many levels. I would be delighted to feature this book in my Little Free Library for the neighborhood to enjoy.
I absolutely loved the illustrations -- it's a gorgeous book and so fun to look at. I think I just would have liked a little more to the story, though overall I did appreciate the simplicity. I'd say it might be well suited for younger kids, maybe up to 3 years old or so, but I know my son would be a little restless with so little text.
This was a super random and silly story, but I think it would be a great book for children. I enjoyed the sister relationship and dynamics in this book, and the illustrations were fun!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with access to read this book!
Big Sister, Long Coat is written by Nelly Buchet and illustrated by Rachel Katstaller. This book tells of two sisters, a big one and a little one, that spend the day together, but nothing seems to go right. The weather is bad, the ice cream is melting, and the library is closing! But despite everything that happens, these two sisters get to spend time together, and appreciate the love that they have for each other, and recognize that this can still be a great day. I love the message of this book, and also really enjoyed the illustration. I also really appreciate the different causes that matter to the author, including nonviolent conflict resolution and recognizing and the importance of access to books for all children, including refugees. This book also ends with some great discussion questions that are age appropriate to the audience of this book. Thank you to the author and publisher of this book, and to NetGalley, for an ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Big Sister, Long Coat is a touching book about two sisters who spend a wonderful day together, despite their day not going as planned. As a big sister myself, I found it so beautiful and relatable.
An adventure for two sister day outing together. Does it going well? Actually not.
This small book offer adorable illustrations with promising messages about sibling love relationship and the importance to enjoy and find beauty from unplanned stuff.
It is charming little plot but I found extra text explanation will make enrich the story. Actually my little one complain about the nonexistent long coat mentioned at title. So I explained that it symbolizes for big sister protection, not magical coat.
Thank you to Netgalley and NorthSouth Books Inc for providing a copy of this ebook. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Expecting Publication : 5 March 2024
A book with beautiful illustrations about the relationship between sisters. The unique art style is a visual spectacle, and it is a story that can be enjoyed by both young and old readers.
Do you have a big sister? Or do you have a little sister? It is fun to make plans with our sister but sometimes those plans are not what we planned. It can rain on our parade. But the anticipation does not have to be ruined. It is always about being present.
An adventure for two sisters on a rainy day.
A special thank you to NorthSouth Books and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review
This is a cute story about having a fun day out with an older sister and the rain makes them change their plans. Overall, this book has a good message- sometimes changes are good- you can still have a good day doing different activities. It is ok to do something different!
I liked the illustrations throughout the book- they are colorful and eye catching
What a darling picture book with incredible illustrations! I love how the concept is a good conversation starter for my own children on how to deal with days that don’t go according to plan. I love the emphasis on spending time with family too! I will definitely add this one to my library.

This is the story of how little sister's day out with big sister did not go as planned. First, it was hot and crowded, and her ice cream melted and left a stain. Then it poured with rain and the library was closed.
But in the end, despite all that, little sister had a very good time indeed. because it is not just about what you do it's about who you do it with...
This book offers little ones and opportunity to think about sibling relationships - and also, in a way, about found family, the ones that feel like siblings. It is a charming book with a simple but important message. But since there was such a lot about the things that were unanticipated, I would have really liked it if there had been more text about why it was so much fun just to be together!
I received an electronic ARC from NorthSouth Books Inc. through NetGalley.
Readers meet two sisters setting off on an adventure filled day. Sadly, plans have to change due to the weather. The little sister shares how the big sis tries to make the day fun and offers other options along the way. The illustrations show how absolutely miserable the weather is as they seek ways to spend the time together. Finally, they head home and the little sister acknowledges that anywhere is special while they're together. Lovely ode to sisterhood.
A sweet children’s book about siblings spending the day together and everything going terribly wrong.
Lessons in how to handle disappointment and obstacles and how to make the best of what we are given and be happy and grateful anyway
