Where Should We Camp Next?: Budget Camping is a super resource for readers looking for budget friendly camping and activities in every US state written and curated by Stephanie and Jeremy Puglisi. Released 2nd April 2024 by Sourcebooks, it's a solid 464 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.
The profiles for camping and outdoor activity locations in all 50 states are arranged geographically from the New England to the West. Each area is further divided into specific campgrounds and attractions both inside and outside the boundaries. Most of the profiles include contact links and online resources and a short description. Tips and extra info are provided in highlighted text boxes throughout, such as places to boondock (park RVs for free overnight), source budget gear, and much more.
Graphics are spare, monochrome, and mostly simply drawn. There's no photography.
The info provided is pithy, correct (as far as info available at time of publication), and has a welcome family friendly vibe. My fondest memories of my childhood are of RV travels with my paternal grandparents, and this book brought so many good memories back to me from campgrounds and parks we visited. I was delighted to see some of the actual campgrounds I visited as a kid are still there and in operation *decades* later.
Five stars. Invaluable resource for travelers in and to the USA. It would make a good choice for public library acquisition and home use.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was a great book filled with loads of information and spots for budget friendly campgrounds in each state. I enjoyed the the authors’ other camping books and thus was another enjoyable read.
Where Should We Camp Next? Budget Camping by Stephanie and Jeremy Puglisi is a great guide for those who enjoy camping or want to get started. My family has been camping for many years now, so any tools, resources, or insights are greatly valued. I love that each state is captured with multiple options provided. The first chapter is an excellent guide to how the costs and various campgrounds are categorized. There are so many tips and tricks included that novice and experts alike can benefit from reading. I also really enjoyed the budget friendly meals provided in the appendix. Based on my own experiences, these are people who know what they are talking about and willing share their experiences. Allow yourself to be inspired and plan your next trip!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
Found the layout of the chapters easy to read and appealing to the eyes. Loved the down-to-earth writing and the informational tidbits were great! It is important to know what BYOT means.... LOL :-)
I now have a list of campgrounds I want to visit! I will need to get a physical copy of the book so I can highlight and write notes in. Now that I am aware of all the other books they have written, looks like I will be adding some of those to my collection also.
A brief overview of what this book has & does was very helpful. Knowing how campgrounds were selected and how they are categorized makes using this book straightforward. The gear section was helpful, it’s always nice to know when to spend the extra to save more over time than to buy the cheap version that you need to replace frequently.
Broken up by US regions & states with 5 to 8 campgrounds per state you definitely get some options. A map at the beginning of each state gives you a quick look at where the parks are in relation to each other and major cities. Some states include low cost activities to do or additional information you might need, so be sure to do some extra research before you head out!
Jumping to areas where I have camped, I found solid information, although in the case of Seward, AK they fail to mention things that might be important to know. Seward has canneries and campgrounds frequently host cannery workers. You also may find Alaskans smoking their salmon harvest during the salmon run. Bonus points if you’re there during the salmon run AND when a cruise ship docks.
The Washington campgrounds seem to include all the pertinent details I would expect, so perhaps Seward was an outlier. It’s a beautiful location and definitely worth the visit as long as you know what you’re getting into!
This is definitely a useful book and one well worth checking out if you’re looking to do some camping.
Really enjoyed this book especially since I’m starting to plan all my summer camping trips! It had a lot of new campgrounds that I wasn’t aware of and for the ones that I did know about, I still learned new information. I would recommend this book for people looking for an intro to camping spots that don’t break the bank.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
As someone who has camped in the Pacific Northwest, and lives in Montana, I had to check out this guide. I was pleased to find a number of local places that are worth while, and new places for me to explore - either in Montana or any of the other 50 states. There were great tips throughout such as cost/ammenity analysis and what is the best bang for your buck. There are also tips about bringing pets or family friendly outings. Overall if you want to camp in any of the states as a hobby this book is a worthwhile guide.
I really enjoyed looking through this book. I especially enjoyed the recipes included in the back. I plan to use several on my next trip. I liked the way the book was formatted. It was easy to follow and find the information I was looking for. I even learned about a few campgrounds in Oregon, where I live, that I had no heard of before!
I love this book. It breaks down the campgrounds into categories. Each campground it suggests has information about the RV parks, hiking trails. What the authors liked about it.If you plan on doing a lot of traveling. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
