I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I were in the targeted audience: teen or younger adult. There were things I enjoyed, and there were things I didn’t enjoy. Overall, I would recommend this for adventure-loving youth. This book follows 19-year-old Abbey, daughter of celebrity rockstar, to London for a year abroad. To her surprise, she ends up rooming with three boys and finds herself in a love triangle while discovering herself amid her newfound freedom.
Let’s begin with what I liked! I thought the first half of the book was captivating and enjoyable. I loved the escapism of studying abroad in London, I loved the male roommates and secondary characters (especially the librarian), I appreciated Abbey’s quest for freedom and adventure, and I was captivated by the mystery of the woman in the portrait.
The second half of the book fell a bit flat, but perhaps it’s because I found the love triangle cringey and I thought, rather than mature, Abbey became less wise and childish as the plot unfolded. She went from a respectable, wise-beyond-her-years woman to a fickle, horny, indecisive child. I did not like her, nor her two love interests. Even the build up of the portrait mystery felt a bit rushed and disappointing. While I love spice, banter, and mystery, I thought the ending and the characterization felt rushed and unsatisfying. I do think my own age and experience might be the reason for this, but I just didn’t find any inspiration or satisfaction with the ending. I can see some high school students enjoying this (although there is a bit of spice), but I wouldn’t personally recommend this as a great book in my circle of adult reader friends.
First and foremost, I want to state that I am a HUGE Elle Kennedy fan. I love all of her books, so far.
Abbey is a 19 year old female who is off to England for a year abroad. She is a History enthusiast and she loves time in the library. The three females that she is sharing a house with turn out to be three males. Abbey won’t be jeopardizing her trip by telling her overprotective father that bit of information.
Abbey quickly finds herself in a love triangle. Maybe I am just not a fan of these storyline, but it really didn’t sit well with me. Abbey won’t date one of the men because he is in a relationship, while at the same time she is entertaining two other men. It was annoying that she wanted them to be so committed to her and yet she had no commitment at all. What is left is a trail of broken relationships and strung around people.
I also found it hard that everyone was vying for her attention. She really didn’t have a personality and even admitted that all of her stories were from her dad.
The only part that I liked about this book was the paper that she was writing. I loved the mystery of it all and some of the people that she met along the way. The cat was also a funny situation.
This book lacked the fire that Kennedy’s books usually have. Maybe it was just not for me. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
This was a great read! Elle Kennedy knows how to write a good story and I couldn't help but fall in love with this new band of characters! Abbey went through a journey of self discovery which I believe is the ingredient that made the story so successful. The love triangle was depicted in a realistic way and gave Abbey the platform to learn and grow from her experiences. The character dynamics reminded me a lot like New Girl and made me laugh the entire way. Abbey's main arc was not choosing between two love interests but finding out who she is in the world. She was relatable because she didn't have it all figured out in her life but was willing to make mistakes and ultimately grow from them. Let's just say that this story really ignited my curiosity to travel abroad and experience the world.
Thank you, Netgalley, for allowing me a copy of Elle Kennedy's new book. I have read almost everything she has written and have loved it.
Honestly, I'm not a love triangle romance reader, but Kennedy has never done that trope that I know of before this book. I really liked Abbey and the roommates, and she did a great job making both male love interests flawed, but adorable.
The story of the painting was intriguing, so now I think I would love for her to write just a plain old mystery book.
I enjoyed the book, but I feel like some of the side characters stories faded to the background. She does banter so well, so I would have loved to read more of that.
All in all, I always will read Elle Kennedy's books!!
I love Elle Kennedy's hockey romances, so I was really excited to start this new story with a rock star's daughter, love triangle, and some mystery thrown in. I just wish I loved it more than I thought I would. The story is at a slower pace than what I'm used to from this author, which is why at times I found myself setting it down. And at times I was more interested in the mystery than the love triangle. I still enjoyed the story and I can't wait to read more from this author. I want to thank NetGalley and Sourcebooks for this ARC.
I liked the premise of going to study abroad, her being a history student really got me because I was that student once upon a time.
The love triangle is not my cup of the tea. I did enjoy seeing her with the two very different men and finally making a decision.
My favourite part of the book was the little historic mystery surrounding a little portrait she bought at an estate sale.
I really enjoyed this new novel by Elle Kennedy. I was expecting this book to be a romance like her others but it was so much more. It did still have some romance in it but it was more a journey for the main character - Abby. Not only personally but also a historical one that she discovers for a class assignment. I highly recommend this book. Thanks NetGalley for the advanced copy. #NetGaleey #GirlAbroad
This is my first book by Elle Kennedy and it won't be my last! I really enjoyed her writing style - it's easy to get into and kept me hooked.
I normally am a fan of love triangles (and this is no exception) but there are some choices the author made that I didn't enjoy. I don't think it'll effect the regular romance reader, so I don't see it as a deterance. I really liked Abbey's story outside of the romance aspect and I'm glad it was included.
Girl Abroad reads more new adult than adult but I'd still reccomend it to all contemporary romance fans.
Rated 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC ebook.
I love Elle Kennedy! Her writing style draws people in and I can always enjoy her books. This book unfortunately fell a little flat for me since the romance aspect wasn’t a focus point. It slowly became more of a mystery with the main character having a slight crush on two guys. It was hard to see the main character developing feelings beyond that since it would jump a month later after 4 chapters and we don’t get to see her bonding with the romance interests. I will continue to read all of the authors books since I do generally love reading them.
With all Elle Kennedy’s books I’ve read, I’ve found they have grip, they’re hooky, and they drag you in and don’t let go. This one started off really flat in that regard. I stopped after chapter 1 (4%). Something about it doesn’t feel like her signature drag-you-in-don’t-let-go.
Three to four stars for the target audience, five for the right readers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloom Books for the ARC.
This sweet coming of age vibes book was so fun and SO different from Elle Kennedy's other work. I'm not usually a big fan of love triangles, but I have no complaints for this one!
A book based in London! Three male flatmates and one girl! Two potential love interests!! Sign me up !
This book will take you directly in a world that you wouldn't get enough of. I was obsessed by Abbey Bly's journey and she is so relatable that you feel every emotion with her.
Abbey is traveling to London for one semester and for some freedom from her overprotective dad. You will be hooked from the point she realizes her flatmates are all boys and she is crushing on two boys at the same time . And thus start a hilarious and interesting journey. Also I loved the mystery of her research paper that was impeccably intervened alongside.
Now for readers who don't like love triangles let me tell you I was also on fence over it that what if I like one guy and she ends up with another one but then I trudged along because it's Elle Kennedy's book. Trust me you won't be disappointed, you will be falling for both men along with Abbey and won't mind either one.
I loved all aspects of this book, those absolute fun flatmates, life long friendships, the mysterious side plot, the London setting and that love triangle.
This is one of those books you wished was a movie and you could live in it !
Definitely a must read!!
I really wanted to like this book, because I absolutely loved most of this author's other works. I could see how there were two storylines, and the main character's situation was similar to the one she was researching. However, I was hoping for a little more romance. I enjoyed the female main character's relationships with the guys she was sharing a flat with, and I really enjoyed the ending of the book. The rest of the story just kind of fell flat for me though.
Abby Bly cannot wait for her year abroad in England. history abound, freedom from her retired rock star dad, and a chance to have adventures she can only dream about. When she arrives to find that her roommates are all boys instead of girl, Abby decides to go with the flow, but keep this a secret from her dad. What happens when one of her roommates has an instant spark with her? Or when she finds a bassist with a local band irresistible? Along with romance, comes a mystery surrounding a portrait painting and a family scandal.
Elle Kennedy weaves a story that is both romantic and mystery, contemporary and instantly relatable. Branching out form her sports romances has given her new wings and new ways to travel. I loved this romance and this love triangle. I did not know who Abby was going to pick until the very end. I found the spice to perfectly interspersed and the mystery surrounding the painting delightful.
I am so frustrated by this book!!! I love the author, I loved the story that was building…but I began to worry about the 40% stage where it was going. The anticipation of going up the roller coaster hill of this story begin to feel like it was never gonna peak and may not be the level of Rod were expecting when it does. Unfortunately, that indeed was the case for me with this.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
The love triangle tension when from hot to not pretty quick when their storyline went so slow. Abbey…for the love of all love stories, nothing felt special because you felt equally for them all. And why…why did we more of Nate than Jack? I mean, what we got of Nate was 🔥…so how could Jack not have had more?? Ugh!
This book was definitely not this author’s norm. More of a YA level feel, maybe?
I received this book from the publisher & NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
I love Elle’s Off Campus series and could not wait to read this! It was a quick read, great for the beach. The love triangle was quite an interesting aspect to the story. I loved the relationship between her and her roommates. Very New Girl, which I love. I was so happy with the ending. Can’t wait to recommend this book!
In Girl Abroad, Abbey Bly is ready to escape from her ex-rock star father’s very long shadow and to start having her own adventures! Step 1 – apply and get accepted to the study abroad program in London, England (London Baby!). Step 2 – rent a room in an off-campus house with three boys. Step 3 – fall in lust with two very different men. Step 4 – investigate the disappearance of a young maid who worked for one of London’s oldest families. Step 5 – lie to your dad about everything! What could possibly go wrong?!
I love Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus series so much that I will read anything she writes! Girl Abroad was no exception. While the love triangle lacks the snap, crackle, pop of Kennedy’s other book couples, it is easy to see why Abbey feels so torn between her two suitors. The mystery was well done, with a poignant and sweet ending. I loved Abbey’s relationship with her father! He is incredibly overprotective, but you can tell it comes from a place of love and a knowledge of making bad choices. Overall, Girl Abroad was a fun book to read on a rainy day!
Thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Bloom Books for sharing this advanced review copy with me in exchange for my honest feedback!
If I'm being completely honest, I got more invested in Abbey's research project than I did in her love triangle. Does that make me a terrible person? Possibly. But it's true.
Abbey leaves her comfortable life as a former rockstar's daughter in Nashville to study in England for a year (cue my jealousy). Upon arrival, she realizes the four housemates she thought were women are actually men. One of whom is attractive (of course) and normal chaos ensues.
I liked how there was more to the plot than the love triangle. However, I found myself caring more about the subplot than the actual love triangle.
Thanks, NetGalley!
If New Girl and Emily in Paris had a baby, it would be Girl Abroad… but just make it new adult edition.
A detour from Elle Kennedy’s classic smutty reads, this felt like more of a coming of age story than anything else. Of course you still get the amazing banter Elle has a knack for writing (I was full on cackling), the forever college friendships (three male roomies this time) and even a fun love triangle (done right). However, at its core, this centered around Abby growing up and what no better place to do that than London. As for main characters, Abby was a confident FMC that was easy to love, even when I was pushing for her to pick one love interest and not two. There was also an unexpected mystery storyline that I know many readers will love, even though it was not my personal favorite!
Read if you like:
-New adult romances
-Love triangles
-Found family
-European adventures
-Mystery sideplots
This had a very different vibe from most of Elle's books, but still so well written. Who doesn't love a good love triangle?! Also this made me feel like I was IN London, and I love that!! :)
