This is a book that gives big questions to small questions - the type of questions my kids typically ask me that have me turning to Alexa! I hoped this book would make me a bit more knowledgable! I didn't feel this book was in anyway 'dumbed' down, it is certainly written more for adults so some paraphrasing and summarising will be required to share with kids when they inevitably ask these big questions.

The author is clearly an extremely knowledgeable scientist and gives well researched, in depth answers. Some of the questions will inevitably grab the reader more than others: 'Why are men bigger than women' being the one that most piqued my interest!

Overall this is a great book to have on your coffee table to start some great debates!

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

John Gribbin is such a fantastic communicator of science, he can truly take anything and bring it to every kind of reader. Whether you’re a scientist, an interested party or someone who doesn’t really like science, there’s something in all of his books that you will find interesting! And especially in the case of this one.

Ten fundamental questions that I think everyone on this earth has asked and pondered at some point, are addressed in Ten Tantalising Truths. From how we know what the earth is made out of, to why the sky is blue and why men tend to be bigger than women. It’s hard not to be inspired and interested with a book like this, as the fundamentals and very basic of questions with very big answers are an intrigue to us all!

As with anything, there may be some questions you find more interesting and engaging than others but they all contain nuggets of knowledge and addressed in a way that will leave you happy with the answers to scientific questions.

As with his other books (seven pillars of science, eight impossible possibilities, musings on time etc…) it’s written spectacularly well and in a really compelling way. They always go so fast these books and I’m always left knowing more than when I went in, which is exactly what you want from a non fiction book!
