I wanted to like this book based on the description. I always find mythologies from different parts of the world very interesting and I generally like fantasy and speculative fiction. This book was not for me. It did not have enough of a narrative structure or enough character development to keep me engaged. I only read about 30% and then stopped. I needed either more plot or more character. I do think the writing was lovely and perhaps a reader who loves a novel in verse or someone more interested in poetry would enjoy it more. I think the concept was really interesting, but the execution was not for me.
Very creative story with overly baroque language, which I found personally difficult to wade through.
Thank you Oonya Kempadoo, Netgalley, and Dundurn Press / Rare Machines for this free ARC in exchange for a review.
I could only make it through 13% before I gave up out of boredom. There's some flowery writing, yet that's completely overshadows by total lack of characterization.
