Oh, Wow! Where do I start with this amazing story? I'm just going to say you Must read this suspenseful thriller!! You will not regret my recommendation to do so. Sarah has a way to make you feel like you're right there in this story standing next to or in the room with the MC's.
I cherished this book, taking my time to absorb every single word and second it was just that good! If you like a mystery/who done it's read this ASAP.
This is my best read of 2024!
This mystery/thriller is described perfectly in the synopsis. Stella Hudson is a lawyer, specifically, a guardian ad litem who represents children when the adults around them have gone a bit haywire. She usually works with teenagers, but an unusual case comes her way: a nine-year-old girl witnessed the death of her nanny, and hasn’t spoken since.
Stella is brought in because Ian and Beth Barclay are the parents of this child, Rose, and they are in the middle of a nasty divorce. Ian was having an affair with Tina, the nanny who had an unfortunate incident with a window. Did she fall, or was she pushed? Rose may be the only one who has the answer to that question, but her traumatic mutism means she can’t tell anyone what she saw.
Stella is a great character; we find out that she also had traumatic mutism as a child, and her backstory is compelling. It’s little Rose who stole the show, though. Without her saying a word, the author still lets us communicate with the girl, verbally painting a picture of her eyes, body language and actions. Whether she’s simply a traumatized child, or a young murderer who killed her nanny, she’s still a little girl who is suffering.
The writing in this is fantastic, and it took the murder-mystery trope of a wealthy family with secrets to another level. The characters were great, even those who played a small role in the story. I did figure out the ending, but it was still fun to read everything coming to the perfect conclusion, and there were several smaller twists that I didn’t see coming at all. Overall, I think most mystery fans will enjoy this one - four stars!
(Thank you to St. Martin’s Press, Sarah Pekkanen and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on August 6, 2024.)
The book follows an attorney as she works to make custody recommendations for an only child, Rose. There’s also a much more interesting subplot. Secondary storyline is a whodunit murder/mystery.
I don’t think the two storylines connected well together.
Also. The ending? It just wrapped up in a perfect little bow with not much of any explanation.
I was so excited to receive this book from NetGalley. This one was very gripping and I couldn’t put it down. Loved every second of it.
I was thrilled to receive an arc of this book! I have usually enjoy Sarah Pekkanen’s books, however I wasn’t completely in love with her last book but this one was a redemption FOR SURE! I loved it! I truly enjoy a good whoodunit and the way that it filters through each suspect for me was “chefs kiss”. The only reason I wouldn’t give it the full five stars is because I figured out about the twist with Stella’s life before they revealed it. Other than that I would definitely recommend this book!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for sharing this digital arc in exchange for my honest review!
As an avid Sarah Pekkanen fan, I was very excited to receive this advanced copy!
The premise is intriguing and the mansion is for sure creepy, but overall this book was a miss for me. I feel that there was so much Stella and her background as a child that the plot with the main story and the nanny gets lost. I did not guess the plot twists which were good, but overall the story left me wanting more.
WOW 4 ⭐️! A gripping whodunit that I devoured. I loved the short chapters and creepy house vibes. I felt like I was in “Clue” investigating alongside the main character, which was so fun. It really kept my attention and kept me guessing until the end.
Although the ending wasn't completely shocking, it was very satisfying. Definitely pick up this book when it’s published in August 2024!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for sharing a digital review copy. ❤️
This was a truly great great read. It’s a modern Gothic, with an appropriate “haunted house, evil witch, trapped princess.” The rescuer is Stella Hudson who is appointed guardian for a little girl, suffering from traumatic mutism in the middle of her parents custody fight after a killing in her home.
It all works! In the background is Stella’s own story and a modern fairy godperson who has played a role in her own life.
The author updates these elements, creates a winning story and a heroine who might make her way into future books.
I think my readers will enjoy this. Thank you Netgalley for this unexpectedly fast moving and compelling tale.
I really enjoyed this book. It had me hooked from the beginning and kept me interested the whole way through,
Stella Hudson is a best interest attorney, she has been assigned to the Barclay case. Rose is nine years old and she is suffering from mutism brought on by trauma. Her nanny, Tina, fell out of a window and died in front of her. Everyone living in the house is a suspect, even Rose herself. Stella has to decide how to do what is best for Rose. She can't do that without spending time with the Barclay's in their home, which makes Stella very nervous. Will Stella figure out what is going on in that house? Or will be it too late?
Twists and turns at every end. With well developed characters and storyline, I enjoyed this quick, page-turner. Thanks NetGalley.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.
9 year old Rose Barclays suffers from traumatic mutism. Her parents are in the midst of a bitter divorce. Rose witnessed her nanny’s death and hasn’t spoken a word since. She lives with her parents and grandmother on a secluded estate. Rose collects sharp objects like shards of glass.
Stella is Rose’s court appointed guardian ad litem, which is an attorney appointed to look out for a child’s best interest. Stella needs to assess who would be the best custodial parent for Rose after the divorce. Stella has a difficult task ahead as Rose cannot communicate. Stella understands traumatic mutism firsthand as she experienced as a child after the death of her mother. Can Stella reach Rose and help her?
Things within the Barclay household are very strange and Stella finds being in the house very creepy. Is anyone telling the truth? Was the nanny’s death an accident or was it murder? Everyone is a suspect.
This case triggers Stella. Her own childhood trauma boils to the surface and she must address her own past. Can she help herself as well as Rose? Can Stella solve the mystery of the nanny’s demise?
Get ready for a story full of twists which will have you wondering. The “house of glass” the Barclay home is actually a glass free zone. Even the photos on the walls do not have glass in the frames. Wine is served in plastic tumblers. The environment in the home is as fragile as glass. The house has an evil energy that puts Stella on edge. Is it the house itself or its inhabitants?
Stella is a best interest attorney and takes the case of 9 year old Rose whose parents are going through a divorce and Stella has to make a recommendation on custody. The nanny, Tina, mysteriously died and it’s become a cold case. Stella finds herself unraveling details and putting herself in danger. This was a quick read and it had me on the edge of my seat. I felt I was living in Stella’s shoes and I truly didn’t fully predict the ending. Even though I assumed there would be a twist, it came together so well!
I really enjoyed this book from Sarah Pekkanen. It was a pretty entertaining thriller and kept my attention. I loved the shorter chapters and fast pace.
I'm not going to give away any spoilers here. I did have a few theories while reading and one of them turned out to be right, so I did end up predicting the ending. But it's OK because I still found it to be entertaining! I read this one pretty quickly and it fit my mood.
Of you've been a fan of this author's books, you would probably really enjoy this one too!
Stella Hudson is a best interest attorney, appointed by the court to act as an independent evaluator and represent the interests of children in custody cases. She usually works with older children, but when her mentor asks her to step in to represent a nine year old girl, Rose, with traumatic mutism, the similarities between her own history and Rose's make it impossible for her to say no. The only problem? Rose's parents are divorcing because of the high-profile murder of Rose's nanny, and everyone in the family is a suspect. And, as Stella starts to unravel the mystery at Rose's house, she's drawn back into the mystery of her own mother's murder.
The plot is tight and twisty, fully of heavy tension without being too over the top. I especially loved Stella's perspective. There are lots of domestic thrillers from the perspective of detectives, cops, the family, etc., but I've never seen one from this perspective. Stella has unique access to the family and is also subject to their independent motivations, giving the reader a front row seat to the machinations of the family. There were numerous twists, some I saw coming and some I didn't, and I love when a thriller does both. I inhaled the book in two days and looking forward to Sarah's next one!
I was very excited for this read! Although I did guess the ending, the plot twists kept coming in the FMC personal and business life so I didn’t mind guessing part of the ending! I read this in one sitting, it definitely kept my attention and kept me hooked!
I enjoyed this book so much. It had me hooked from the first page and I wanted to see what was going to happen. I liked the characters, especially Stella. I loved how determined she was to figure out what was going on in the house and what happened to the nanny. I liked how every time Stella was at the house she got this eerie, unsettling feeling. The house had some creepy vibes. I liked how all the characters played a part and I didn’t know who to trust or what to believe. I loved the mystery aspect and I couldn’t figure out the ending. I highly recommend this one if you like thrillers. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Another great “seat of your pants” thriller by Sarah Pekkanen. She never disappoints her readers and leaves them hanging until the end. Thanks for the advance copy.
"House of Glass" by Sarah Pekkanen is a captivating thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Stella Hudson, a lawyer with her own haunting past, is assigned to represent Rose Barclay, a nine-year-old girl caught in the midst of her parents' bitter divorce and the mysterious death of her nanny, Tina.
Rose's trauma has left her unable to speak, mirroring Stella's own childhood experience with traumatic mutism after her mother's death. As Stella delves into the Barclay family dynamics to determine the best custody arrangement for Rose, she uncovers a web of secrets and lies that shroud the events leading up to Tina's fatal fall from a third-story window. The Barclay household is fraught with tension, from the wealthy and uptight Beth Barclay to the more down-to-earth Ian Barclay, Rose's parents. Stella navigates through the murky waters of their custody battle, all while grappling with her own inner demons resurfacing from the past.
The eerie atmosphere of the story is heightened by the absence of glass throughout the Barclay estate, a symbolic representation of the hidden dangers and dark secrets lurking within. As Stella digs deeper into the case, she realizes that anyone could be a suspect in Tina's death, and she must race against time to uncover the truth before it's too late. Pekkanen masterfully crafts a narrative filled with palpable tension and suspense, keeping readers guessing until the very end. The haunting presence of Rose, a traumatized child with a penchant for collecting sharp objects, adds an unsettling element to the story that grips you from the beginning.
"House of Glass" is a compelling and binge-worthy read, blending sinister tones with poetic prose to create a truly unforgettable thriller.
Sarah Pekkanen masterfully crafts a story that blends suspense, psychological depth, and a haunting setting. "House of Glass" is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers, offering a chilling yet captivating exploration of family secrets and the lasting impact of trauma.
House of Glass, by Sarah Pekkanen, is another compulsively readable psychological thriller by one of my favorite authors. I could barely put my eraser down, racing though the pages until I got to the explosive end. Perfectly paced and deliciously twisty. Highly recommend!
Wow what twists and turns?! This book was a great unsuspecting thriller! The main character Stella was relatable, driven, and caring. The way she was written made you know and care for her and her future. You really wanted her to pull through for Rose, the mute child. One of the main draws for me into psychological thrillers is the psyche of the main characters and even side characters. Sarah did a great job with this in House of Glass. You close this book at the end feeling like you just read a real story about real people with real BIG problems. And the end. Didn't see that one coming!
