Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC opportunity!

In this story we are following the story of the murder of a nanny- with 4 witnesses. Stella, a divorced lawyer with a history of trauma we learn about, is appointed counsel to little Rose, to make sure little Rose’s best interests are kept in mind.

There is a “who dun it” theme throughout, and keeps you guessing, at times changing who you think may be at fault. There was solid character development as we learned about Stella’s past as she finds herself relating to Rose.

This story will keep you guessing while also going deeper into how trauma can affect a person through their life.

I read this book in a day because I wanted to know what happened! The creepy mansion where terrible events happened was a great place for a whodunnit. I liked how the FMC’s past came full circle in taking the case of Rose. The author did a great job leading the reader down red herring lane. While I did suspect some things that turned out to be true, others I truly didn’t see coming. I won’t elaborate any further for spoiler reasons, so I will instead thank the author, publisher, and Netgalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The House of Glass is a very good read. Rose is a small child that has traumatic mutism do to an “accident” at her home. Tina the Nanny has died due to either falling or being pushed from a window. Her parents are in the process of divorce and the courts have assigned Stella to investigate the state that Rose is in, in order to give her recommendation as to which parent should get custody.
So much happens in this book and it is a real page turner. I couldn’t put it down.
Definitely a book to remember.

Review of Uncorrected Digital Galley

Nine-year-old Rose Barclay collects broken shards of glass and other sharp objects. She never speaks.

Guardian ad litem Stella Hudson, a child advocate lawyer, has a particular expertise in working with teen-agers. However, her friend [and father figure] Judge Charles Huxley, has asked her to accept Rose as her client.

Was Rose responsible for pushing her nanny, Tina de la Cruz, through a third-story window? And if she did, why would she kill the nanny she supposedly loved?

=========

The mystery of Tina’s death lies at the heart of this psychological thriller. Stella’s own past plays into the solving of the mystery surrounding the nanny’s death and Rose’s subsequent mutism. Strong, nuanced characters help the reader negotiate the ins and outs of the many dark secrets in this unputdownable tale.

Although a bit creepy at times, the plot twists and turns are so unpredictable, so intriguing that they keep those pages turning at breakneck speed as readers try to put all the clues together. Although both Stella and Rose have heartbreaking trauma in their lives, the unfolding story’s primary focus lies with the family relationships.

Readers who enjoy psychological thrillers, tales of families affairs, and puzzling mysteries will find much to appreciate here as the evolving story leads to a denouement most readers simply won’t see coming.

Highly recommended.

I received a free copy of this book from St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book, absolutely loved the main character and everything that she brought into the story and that we got to really learn about her past alongside the developing story of who killed the Nanny. The last 50% of the book is full of twists that will keep you reading until you find out what the truth really is. This is such a great thriller full of amazing characters and back stories! Very well written and you must read it when it comes out in August 2024! Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for this ARC!!

Young Rose is not talking from the trauma of her babysitters death. Her parents are getting divorced and she gets an attorney to decide what is in her best interest. Stella has the big job of deciding what is going to happen to Rose. Who really killed Tina? This becomes Stellas biggest inquiry. This fast paced thriller will have you questioning everyone and everything. Thanks netgalley for this 4.5 star arc: i enjoyed every page and recommend you pick this one up!

Synopsis: The mysterious death of a child’s nanny leads to uncovered secrets and betrayals. Stella, an attorney needs to determine which parent will get custody of Rose, the mute 9 year old who collects sharp objects. While Stella gets to know the family, secrets are uncovered and will they determine who is the killer?

Thoughts: I’d give this 3.5 stars as a few story lines feel short and included for fluff, but overall I enjoyed the whodunnit story! I did figure out one plot line, but it still kept me on my toes.

Thank you to Sarah Pekkanen, St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book!

A young nanny falls to her death and everyone in the family is a suspect including her nine year old charge. Stella Hudson is appointed as the attorney for the child during her parents' divorce, and she soon discovers there is more going on behind the scenes with this family than originally thought. Quite the page turner with compelling characters and suspense with every turn of the page.

Creepy child, creepy old house, a family with secrets- but what’s really happened? The author definitely makes Rose out to be sinister but pulls you in for a twist at the end. I didn’t love the story but I stayed mildly entertained.

This book kept me up late and waking up early to get to the end of the story. The psychological thriller revolving around Stella, a best interest attorney hired to determine the fate of her young, mute, client Rose who has a nanny that just died under suspicious circumstances kept me on the edge of my seat. I have to admit I was hoping/expecting even a more shocking ending which is why I am giving 4 stars rather than 5 but I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

Stella is a child advocate in custody hearings and takes on the case of Rose who hasn’t spoken since their Nanny fell through a 3rd floor window to her death while she and her grandmother were outside in the garden. In order for Stella to feel good about her recommendations she needs to understand what happened that day to traumatise Rose so severely and make sure she is safe. Rose’s trauma brings back Stella’s own period of mutism after her mother and father died and she was sent to live with an aunt who didn’t really want her. As her investigation continues, the questions mount as to who killed the nanny and is Rose still in danger as well as Stella.

3.5 rounding up to 4. I received this copy for free through netgalley. I loved the unreliability of this book, I couldn’t trust anyone (except for Stella the main character). You could tell everyone was lying but it was you never knew WHY they were lying and who you could really trust. I was pleased with the ending, it wrapped it all up and made it clear what actually happened. The only reason it didn’t get more stars from me is because I just didn’t really feel that WOW factor that gave me goosebumps and made me super excited for someone else to read it. I also felt like there were certain aspects of the story (like Charles and then Stella’s mom) that felt so disjointed from the main part of the story. Those parts were still so good and interesting, I just felt like it was part of a different story. I recommend giving this one a shot.

I learned of Sarah Pekkanen when I read The Golden Couple at the end of 2023. I knew I had to read more!

Stella is an attorney who is investigating the death of Tina de la Cruz, a young nanny at the Barclay home. She serves as representation for children in custody cases, and 9-year-old Rose Barclay is her new client. The case brings back memories from Stella’s childhood and the trauma of losing her mother.

Stella slowly gets to know people who loved and were involved in Tina’s life. As she tries to determine the killer, Stella watches Ian and Beth Barclay navigate how to keep up appearances and bring their daughter back from traumatic muteness while also going through a divorce. Ian’s mother Harriet also lives in the stately home and is a fixture in young Rose’s life. Despite all the love surrounding her, Rose maintains her silence. Through uncovering information about her own past and putting pieces together, Stella arrives at the truth.

The story was so intense! I kept reading, even when the story got creepy. I knew with each chapter, Stella would learn more about the Barclay family and get closer to knowing what happened to Tina. Pekkanen does a great job with characterization and building suspense. The twists and turns didn’t stop. My only criticism is that the epilogue felt too long, even though I understood the idea in connecting all the dots.

Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, and Sarah Pekkanen for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

First, I don’t line plots around possibly “evil” children. Having read the synopsis, I shouldn’t have picked this one up.

That aside, this book bored me to tears.

I’m seeing lots of raving reviews, so there’s lot of people out there who love this one! If it’s on your TBR, don’t let me deter you.

This book was extremely difficult to put down. Overall, I would give it 4 to 4.5 stars, because even the main character doesn't come across very loveable. The side story with her ex-husband feels unnecessary as well. But the main plot is very well done, full of twists and turns and surprises! I really was not able to solidfy the ending until the last few chapters when it was revealed. I would happy to read anything by this author for sure!!!

Like many of the authors books, this kept me on my toes the entire way through. I had my guesses and theories, just like the lead character and kept being reminded of the mvvie, The Bad Seed. I needed a book to get me out of a reading slump and this really did the trick. I kept thinking about the characters after the fact and wish there was a sequel to pick up and find out more. A great fast read.

Psychological thriller? Check. Creepy kid? Love when there’s a creepy kid. Page turner? Sign me up. This book was so good! I’m pretty sure I changed my theory of who killed the nanny, Tina about twenty times. I never knew what twist was coming our way. I enjoyed our FMC, Stella. Stella seemed to actually care about what happened to Rose and how she could help her. Rose’s parents kinda sucked. Her mom, Beth, was a total helicopter mom. Her dad, Ian, is likable but untrustworthy. Her grandma, Harriet, seems sweet but overbearing. It’s a lot of unlikable suspects to pick from 👀 Throw in the creepy kid, Rose, and you’ll be coming up with some wild theories. Highly recommend this un-put-downable thriller

Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC. First, I really enjoyed House of Glass. I couldn't put it down. We follow our FMC Stella Hudson who is an attorney who has her best interests in her clients. She normally doesn't work with younger kids, however she made an exception for Rose Barclay. The reason being is that Rose suffers from traumatic mutism due to seeing her nanny die in front of her. Stella understands traumatic mutism completely and decided to help Rose and her family. The Barclays' are going through a divorce and both want full custody of Rose. That's where Stella comes into play to see what the best interest for Rose is. However, things begin to get eerie as the nanny's murder case was never solved and Stella wonders if the parents or if even Rose is involved. Everyone and I mean every single character is hiding secrets and you will not see the twist coming.
