Rose is nine and witnessed the possible murder of her beloved nanny, right in the middle of her parents divorce. As a result, she stopped speaking.
Stella is a best interest attorney, an attorney assigned to the child during a divorce to determine what custody arrangement is best for them. While she normally doesn’t accept children under 13 due to her own trauma, she is intrigued by Rose.
From the moment Stella sees the estate that Rose lives at with her family, she realizes this family might be more troubled than she feared.
As Stella comes closer to uncovering secrets that the Barclay’s desperately want to keep hidden, she finds herself in danger.
I always seem to struggle a little more writing reviews for books I loved, and this is one of those books that there were so many things I enjoyed.
I loved that this was a nuanced thriller. There was the main plot, but the subplot was also interesting and really held my interest. I needed to know what was going on with everything and quickly flipped through the pages. I enjoyed that I was guessing about how several things would play out. What happened to Tina? Who is going to get custody of Rose? And what happened to Stella’s mom? Just so many things I needed to know the answers to, and they were finally all revealed starting at about the 75% mark.
I loved that this book shined light on court appointed advocates for children. I had one of these when I was a child and am fascinated with how this process works. I didn’t realize that some of them are trained investigators and really try to uncover what is best for the child in their natural environment. I’d be curious to see if this was really true or just a work of fiction. I know when I was working with mine, they just interviewed me, and I played with some toys and colored while we talked. I remember being really mad after though because she didn’t do what I wanted, but then as I got older and reflected back it was what I needed, so I was glad she was there for me.
While I enjoyed the sub-plots, I was a little surprised that they were included. I think that they added depth to Stella’s character and helped shape the why behind the way she acted and reasons for what she did, however, they didn’t really have any relation to what was going on with the main plot. It didn’t bother me, it just made me curious, but I enjoyed it. For me it added to the story and wasn’t a distraction.
I’ve read another book by this author and while I immensely enjoyed it, this one was even better. I think that her writing is wonderful and very easy to read. She writes with a style that is relatable and flows nicely. I enjoyed all the characters, and I liked reading about how Stella and her ex still had a amicable relationship after their divorce, it was a nice change of pace from what I normally read about.
I found this book to be unpredictable. I don’t usually put much effort into trying to figure out who “did it” but sometimes you just know. I thought I had this one figured out for the longest time, there were even red herring along the way to distract me from thinking it was this person. But then about the 75% mark the reveal happened, and I was just shaking my head from surprise. I didn’t see this one at all, and when it was revealed, it was fantastic. When all the pieces were laid out, I was like
oh gosh yes!”. It was perfect and I loved it.
I can’t wait to read the next book that Sarah Pekkanen puts out because they just seem to be getting better each time!
Thank you to St. Martins Press, @StMartinsPress and Netgalley @Netgalley for this e-arc. All opinions are my own.

If you are looking for a great thriller than this one is for you. I have read several books by Sarah Pekkanen and this one is probably my favorite. It hooked me from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down. The story is so twisted but engrossing. 5 stars!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martins Press for my ARC.
Good book, made for great reading! However, I think most Guardian Ad Litem’s do not act as private investigators. I thought the extent of her job role was a little preposterous, but still an interesting thriller and I’ll read more from Sarah Pekkanen.
Excellent, as usual! I love her unique style of writing..keeps you guessing and carries you along twists and turns with all your emotions. Highly recommend!
On the outside they were the perfect family. Wealthy, successful, happy. But then their young nanny fell to her death from a window, or was she pushed? A nine-year-old girl who collects sharp objects and refuses to speak. A lawyer whose job it is to uncover who in the family is a victim and who is a murderer. But how can you find out the truth when everyone is lying?
This book was so good! I did enjoy it. However, I did find the MC to be a bit insufferable at times, and several other characters as well. Regardless, the story was intriguing, the mystery was excellent, and the twists, while a bit predictable, we’re still good.
A taut thriller that kept me guessing until the end. The story begins with a disturbed child, wealthy, warring parents and a dead nanny. Was she pushed ? Was it an accident? Who saw what? Who is covering for whom? Stella, Tthe child's court appointed representative needs to find the answers to these questions while grappling with her own demons before another tragedy can occur.
This was a great mystery, kept me going until the very end. I did not guess who had done it and that's always a plus for me! I also love how long Sarah's books are! The only thing that I didn't like, that felt like it was thrown in at the very end with no context or even relevancy to the story was the thing with the detective . I didn't see the point to it and wasn't a fan.
Another smart, twisty thriller by Sarah Pekkanen! She writes female characters so well, and her newest novel is no exception. I liked that she played with the trope of a psychotic child in this one, as I didn’t expect it, but then went another direction. This is the perfect end of summer/start of school thriller.
Thank you NetGalley, and Sarah Pekkanen for the chance to read an ARC of Sarah’s new novel, House of Glass. First I should say, I’m a huge fan of the author. I’ve read many of her solo books, as well as her jointly written ones. All of them have been amazing. While I may not love the “Bad seed” genre, this one was different. It made me second guess everything I was reading and that’s one of my favorite things when reading a book. I’m so often right when I guess the plot line early on. This book, I didn’t. It surprised me with every twist and turn. I’m so glad I was able to give this book five stars and look forward to the next book Sarah writes.
I haven't read a book featuring the evil child trope since having my own child. I was utterly creeped out at a few parts in this book and had to set it down! 5 stars for creep factor. 5 stars for suspense. I continue to be blown away by Sarah Pekkanen's writing and will forever automatically be purchasing every new book she writes. The twists and turns in this novel made it hard to pinpoint who actually committed the crime. And like I stated, the creep factor just gave me the goosebumps, I loved it so much! Thank you for the eARC. I will be posting a review to goodreads, instagram, and my blog!
This was an ARC from NetGalley. Great fast-paced read. Solid writing from a trusted author. Domestic suspense at its finest. Recommend
I loved this novel! I haven’t been reading for a while and this was perfect to get me out of my dry spell. I was hooked in right away learning about Stella and her job. Wondering what kind of clients she took on and why? The suspense of rose not being able to speak hooked my attention with wondering what was going to happen next. The final 1/3 of the book had me completely shocked and I could t put it down.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy of House of Glass by Sarah Pekkanen in exchange for an honest review.
After Tina, nanny to the wealthy Barclay family’s nine-year-old daughter Rose, falls out a third floor window to her death, attorney Stella is hired to determine the girl’s best interest in an acrimonious custody dispute between her parents, Beth and Ian, who are divorcing because Ian was sleeping with Tina. Complicating matters is the fact that Rose can’t or won’t speak, leaving Stella in the dark as to the child’s own wishes. Add doting grandma Harriet, living in the Barclay mansion while recovering from knee surgery, into this toxic mix and you get a psychological thriller and locked room mystery all in one. Who killed Tina, and why? And are they coming for Stella next?
While it could have benefited from a bit more editing to tighten up the narrative, this is a solid outing by Pekkanen that kept me engaged until the very end. Four stars.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sarah Pekkanen does a really good job at making everyone seem crazy. When the nanny falls to her death, everyone is a suspect. Was it the blue-collar dad? The rich mom? The overbearing grandma? Or was it the child who is now silent and has a hobby of collecting knives and glass in her room? You’ll have to read it to find out.
Wow, Sarah Pekkanan baffles us again with another spell-binding thriller! If you haven’t read Gone Tonight (August 2023), then get it as soon as possible.
This year she brings us The House of Glass where a rich family is being investigated after their nanny falls from a window to her death…or was she pushed? Even though the nanny was having an affair with the husband and was pregnant with his child, the case has turned cold.
The daughter, Rose, is unable to speak after the traumatic event and Stella is hired as a Best Interest Attorney to figure out which parents she should live with after her parents divorce. Stella is the only person that can help Rose, as something similar happened to her during her childhood.
As Stella investigates the family, she is not sure who she can trust. The house is very creepy and doesn’t have any glass. Everyone seems to be telling her lies. Rose has an angry side, doesn’t want her around and keeps hiding weapons. Is this child really evil? Stella juggles with her own trauma and trying to look into her own mother’s death.
I could not put this book and devoured it on just two days. A big thank you to St. Martins Press & NetGalley for the advanced digital copy of this book. Don’t hesitate to pick this one up on 8/6/24!
“The Barclay estate reminds me of a beautiful rock that you turn over to reveal wet, rotting leaves teeming with wiggling bugs stuck to the underside.”
This book was fantastic from beginning to end. It kept me interested and involved, but wasn’t overdone. It didn’t feel forced or rushed. It was a slow, twisting journey of manipulation and ill-placed “good intentions”.
A tragedy at the Barclay mansion threatens to rip a family apart. Ian and Beth are getting divorced as a result and Stella Hudson is assigned as a child advocacy agent in the custody battle over their daughter, Rose. Rose’s nanny, Tina, was murdered at the house. The Barclays, including the grandmother Harriet, all claim it was an accident. But the more Dose tries to get to know Rose, the more it seems that the girl is more than a little troubled. Suspicion arises around Rose, but Stella fights tooth and nail to make sure Rose doesn’t end up with a murderer or that Stella sentences her parents to live with one.
This psychological thriller shows the lengths people will go to to protect either the ones they love the most or themselves. And even though there isn’t a crazy plot twist, the story unravels perfectly making it unputdownable.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this advanced reader’s copy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this psychological thriller. The main plot gets introduced early on hooking you into it quickly. I also enjoyed the subplots as well which added another element to the storyline and left me wanting to know even more about the subplots. This book kept me guessing, every time I thought it figured out, something made me question it.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press, Sarah Pekkanen and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Whoa!! Just finished Sarah Pekkanen’s latest book House of Glass and all I can say is WHOA!! House of Glass is truly a fabulous page turner with plenty of twists and turns and shady characters. House of Glass was probably my favorite Sarah Pekkanen novel yet but I say that with every book she writes. Sarah’s writing never ceases to amaze me. Can’t wait to read what she writes next!!
Huge thank you to St. Martin’s Press, Sarah Pekkanen and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
This was an okay thriller. It didn't suck me in and make me want to read non-stop like some thrillers do, but I did enjoy it. It took too long to wrap up in the end once the truth was brought to light. 3/5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Stella is a best interest attorney, appointed as counsel for a nine-year-old girl named Rose. Rose witnessed the possible murder of her nanny, now suffers from traumatic mutism, and is caught in the middle of her parents’ divorce and custody battle. It’s Stella’s job to decide which parent Rose should live with, and while observing and interviewing the family, Stella realizes there’s more to the nanny’s death than the police know.
This was a pretty quick read. I wasn’t a huge fan of the writing style but carried on. The first half of the book felt faster paced while we tried to figure out who pushed the nanny. Then the second half veered off course a bit. The ending was a tad predictable, but the author did tie up all loose ends which I appreciate.
