This book was so twisty and fun. Stella is a best interest attorney assigned to look into the Barclay family to determine custody of 9-year-old Rose, amid her parents' bitter divorce. The biggest issue? Rose hasn't spoken since the shocking death of her nanny in the family home. As Stella investigates the inner-workings of the family, which also includes Rose's ever-present grandmother, she starts to wonder whether this wasn't an accident and who among the four could be the murderer. The book was fast paced and full of turns that worked really well. For a moment I was wondered it would veer into too twisty for the plot to actually work well but Pekkanen ultimately executed the final twists quite well, allowing for it all to come together.
Stella focused in her career on helping teens in challenging situations. When her mentor asks her to take on a case with a younger child, she is nervous. Soon she believes she is the only person who could possibility help the child. As Stella gets to know the family, she starts to learn more about the suspicious death of the child’s nanny.
I enjoyed this one. Fast paced. Twisty. Interesting characters.
House of Glass will grab you from the moment you start reading it and keep you fully engaged until the end. It’s plot is unique, the book is well-written and the protagonist is one we have all been waiting for.
I was completely and utterly OBSESSED with this book. Sarah Pekkanen NEVER disappoints and this one had me on the edge of my seat until the very last moment!
I received both the galley and the advanced audiobook of this book and honestly, I listened and read 44% of the book and I’m just not interested. The main character doesn’t interest me the case that she’s working on. I find that the family has all questionable narrators and I don’t trust anyone, but I’m really not interested in who killed the nanny. I’m sorry I can’t give an honest review of this book because I can’t finish it. Thank you.
Stella works with children under the age of 13 to determine what is in the best interest of the child in cases where placement in divorce cases, etc. are involved. Her current case involves Rose, a 9 year old who is has become mute after a tragedy has occurred in her home. Her parents who are getting a divorce and her grandmother are living in the house and Stella is trying to sort things out. She learns that a worker for the family either experienced an accident or was murdered by someone in the house. Stella is an expert at what she does and finds herself a target.
This is a page turning twisty story with an exciting and surprise ending.
Sarah Pekkanen never misses! This was such a twisty thriller. I truly didn’t know what to think as the whole family could be guilty. Such a fantastic story.
Sarah Pekkanen is truly the master of gripping and thrilling reads and House of Glass was no different.
This was truly a book that had a total hold on me - I could not put it down, didn't want to put it down and I am still thinking about it long past finishing the final page.
What an intense and twisting thriller! It captivated my attention from the first page until the end! The story is centered around Rose, a 9-year-old girl who witnessed the Nanny hired to care for her, fall to her death. As a result of this trauma, she is no longer able to speak. Stella, a best interests attorney has been hired by the court to determine what the best custody arrangement would be for Rose after the divorce of her parents. Will she be able to determine what is best for Rose when she is unable to communicate with her? As Stella investigates the mysteries swirling around Rose, her family and the tragic death of the Nanny, she realizes everything she has been told may be lies. As Stella deals with her own demons from childhood, she begins to unravel the family's secrets, as well as secrets from her own past. Whatever happens, Stella knows she must find a way to both reach and protect Rose. Sarah Pekkanen has brilliantly combined the alternating stories of Rose and Stella in a chilling, totally absorbing book that was hard to put down!! Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for my advanced copy of the book. The opinions of this review are my own.
Stella is a best interest attorney who has been assigned to the Barclay family to determine which parent should be given custody of their nine year old daughter - Rose.
Rose doesn't speak, ever since she witnessed the death of her nanny, who died under mysterious circumstances.
Everyone in the Barclay family has something to hide, and as Stella gets closer to solving the mystery, she starts looking into her own mysterious upbringing.
This was such a great read.
The characters, the mystery, the side mystery of Stella's past, I was hooked on all of it.
This was a twisty read that kept me guessing.
I just love Sarah Pekkanen. I enjoyed the books she co-wrote with Greer Hendricks and the books she’s written solo.
House of Glass is creepy because it centers around a little girl who has traumatic mutism. Her nanny fell out of a window at her home and she witnessed the whole thing. Or was she pushed? Who pushed her? Could it have been the little girl? The one who liked to collect broken glass and knives? It’s a ride, y’all!
I loved it and didn’t guess the ending. Such a great thriller.
I thoroughly enjoyed this atmospheric and twisty mystery thriller. It had a slow build-up, much like the climb of a rollercoaster, but the final 15% was a thrilling, action-packed descent.
The plot twists were unexpected and kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I realized I had no clue. Every well-developed character made me question and second guess my assumptions. I also found the element of Rose's traumatic mutism particularly intriguing and uneasy.
If you're seeking a tense and suspenseful thriller, make sure to pick this one up today.
I've enjoyed Sarah's collaborations with Greer Hendricks but this has been my first book of hers that she's written solo. Definitely adding her to my must read list.
“Fury is more menacing when it glides beneath a seemingly placid surface.”
I have mixed feelings on this one. I’m baffled how Stella can hold down a job. With the non-stop anxiety, panic, she’s borders on barely functioning. And yes, working for Rose probably is making all of that worse, but it was always something with her. I just didn’t care for her at all. I love rep in books, however Stella having interest in a female was thrown in at the 11th hour, which felt a bit gratuitous as there was no indication she was anything but straight beforehand.
However, you don’t have to love all the characters to enjoy the book and I liked this storyline. Stella’s job is that much harder because Rose cannot speak right now, so it’s especially difficult to figure out what is in her best interest, especially because everyone in this family is incapable of telling the truth.
So with some exceptions, this is a fun read.
This is a hard review for me. I enjoyed the book but didn't love it. This book sounded so interesting and I definitely thought there was going to be creepy child vibes. It did not disappoint on that front. I felt that the MC's whole side story/back story was not really adding anything to the story, especially when it concluded. I don't feel we really got to know any of the characters deeply enough and it felt like the kind of story you would need to have a deeper knowledge of the characters on. I enjoyed listening to the story, the narrator did a great job bringing it to life. The twists were good and I wanted to keep coming back to it. It just felt a little drawn out at time.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my ALC of this story.
Family secrets, deception and a mysterious death along with an eerie house with no glass. Don’t miss out on this amazing new novel from Sarah Pekkanen, who will having you questioning everyone’s motives and wondering who killed the nanny.
Rose Barclay is an 8-year-old girl whose parents are in the middle of a divorce and attorney Stella Hudson has been brought in to decide Rose’s custody. However, this isn’t your average custody issue. Most recently, Rose’s nanny was killed due to a fall from a window on the family’s property, the same nanny Rose’s father had an affair with. The traumatic death of the nanny also appears to have caused selective mutism in Rose, making Stella’s job even more complicated.
Despite Stella never previously meeting Rose, Stella’s own childhood experiences make Stella committed to protecting Rose, even if it means protecting her from herself and her loved ones.
As the story unfolds, this page turner of a novel provides details that make you question the nanny’s fall – was it an accident or was she pushed. Everyone in Rose’s family seems to be hiding something and it makes you question if it is guilt or are they trying to protect Rose or themselves.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for and honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Rose is a 9-year old girl who has trauma mutism after seeing her nanny fall out of a window to her death. Or was she pushed? Or did Rose have something to do with it? Now, she is the center of a difficult custody battle between her parents- her dad who was having an affair with the nanny who was planning to share her pregnancy news with him the day she fell and her mom who had plenty of reason to be angry with the nanny. That is where Stella comes in. Stella is a best interest attorney, appointed to serve as counsel for children in custody cases. Before she makes her recommendation she is determined to figure out if either parent could be a killer, or if Rose is the threat.
I really enjoyed the build of the story. I thought the killer was a little obvious, but it did not take away from that storyline. I also thought Stella digging into her mom's death was interesting, but that storyline felt kind of random (20 years later and now you NEED all the details?) and the way it wrapped up seemed wildy too far fetched with all the connections.
Thank you NetGalley for an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Sarah Pekkanen has become a go-to author for me when I am looking to read a fast-paced thriller and this one did not disappoint!
Stella Hudson is a best interest attorney assigned to determine who will receive custody of nine-year-old Rose Barclay in her parent's bitter divorce. Rose, however, can't make her wishes known since she is suffering from traumatic mutism following the tragic death (or murder?) of her nanny, Tina. As Stella tries to determine a good outcome for Rose, no one is safe from being a suspect as she tries to solve the mystery surrounding Tina's death and her own troubled past.
My only criticism is that the introduction of a love interest for Stella toward the end of the book was unnecessary and took away from the main plot.
Started out with potential but then just dwindled with Stella and her story which the author tried unsuccessfully to correlate with Rose. The book is all about Stella and her inability to deal with her mother ‘s death on a mature level for a woman in her working position. The Book tried to incorporate some supernatural and darkness but it fell short. Rose was certainly a victim but not sure how so much was overlooked in her home environment by her parents . A meh read.
This was quite disappointing. The spooky, tense atmosphere was well done but that’s about it. The twists were trite and eye rolling, as was the ultimate unsatisfying conclusion. Weirdly, despite Stella being the narrator, she has very little personality.

HOUSE OF GLASS is a suspenseful, wild ride that kept me hooked from start to finish—definitely a bingeable thriller! I enjoyed the supporting characters, & the abundance of suspects kept me constantly guessing. The creepy house setting enhanced the atmosphere, & the numerous motives made it hard to know who to trust! The red herrings scattered throughout the plot kept me on my toes.
Told solely from Stella's POV, the narrative delves into her personal struggles & growth, which I found compelling. I appreciated how Stella's own experiences paralleled the case she takes on with Ruby, adding layers to the story.
Although I guessed the ending, the eerie journey was thoroughly enjoyable. The twists & turns 🌀, combined with Stella's development, made this a binge worthy read.
