Ok, I have to confess…I like my thrillers dark and twisted. So when the suspicion of the CHILD being the monster, I couldn’t put it down.
This thriller spooked me and kept me reading long into the night. I thought the character of Stella was well fleshed out and felt 3 dimensional.
I do have some qualms though…

SPOILER ALERT
Ok, it’s on you now if you read this.
I wish it had have been the child. When it became the grandmother I for some reason became less invested in the plot… It didn’t make sense to me how this old woman was actually pretending not to be so old and it actually made more sense to me if Rose was the evil one. The sweet ending just felt out of place for me.
As well, I Love that we see LGBTQ plus representation and a main character, but it felt like the love interest was a little bit sprung out of nowhere…I wish there was more build up to it so it didn’t feel like an addition but actually part of the character.
Still a solid book!
One of my all time favorite authors does it again. I believed most of the book I had it all figured out…but of course I was wrong. So many twists and turns, loved the dynamics of the mute child, the mystery of who the murderer was and of course the love story. This one has it all. Great read.
I thought House of Glass by Sarah Pekkanen was an engaging read with very complicated characters. I would read another book by this author.
Great book! Good character development and keeps you hooked to see what is going on. Predicted the big twist, but still very good!
When the nanny for a rich family falls (or was pushed?) to her death at their mansion, everyone from the parents, grandmother and even the young daughter are suspects. Everything about this was either painfully predictable or laughably cheesy. I’m a sucker for the creepy child trope, which is the only thing that saved this from being a complete flop for me.
This was a fun one! I was unsure throughout the book of who the villian was, which I appreciate since sometimes it is too obvious. Entertaining, good ending.
House of Glass was my first book by author Sarah Pekkanen. I enjoyed her writing style and the way her book kept me guessing until the very end.
What I liked about the book:
* There was a cast of unreliable characters so you were always suspicious of them and trying to figure out their role in the mystery
* Stella the best interest attorney had trauma from her past that came up that she had to deal with due to this case. I liked learning about her background.
* The layers that were revealed as the story went on.
Read if you like:
* Lies, secrets and deception
* unreliable characters
* a mystery that has you questioning everyone
* eerie house vibes
* creepy kid vibes
* suspense
* trauma
Who would enjoy this book:
If you are a fan of Sarah Pekkanen or enjoy a good mystery/suspense book, then I recommend reading this book. It will be published on August 6, 2024.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an advanced copy of this book. I voluntarily read it and gave an honest review.
"A House of Glass" by Susan Fletcher is a beautifully written novel that had its moments but didn't fully captivate me. The story, set in the early 20th century, follows Clara Waterfield as she builds a glasshouse at a mysterious manor. While Fletcher's prose is haunting and lyrical, and she captures the eerie atmosphere well, I found the pacing a bit slow at times. The blend of historical fiction and gothic suspense was interesting, but the mystery didn't always hold my attention. Overall, it's a decent read with rich details, but it didn't quite meet my expectations.
I did not want this book to end. It captured me from the beginning. The character development was great while the storyline had a newer twist. This did remind me a little bit of The Push which is one of my favorite books.
Stella is tasked with helping a young girl after the unexpected death of her nanny. She has the responsibility of deciding with who she will live with and overall Rosa’s best interests. As she digs deeper into what happened with Tina, she feels the need to help solve the mystery and figure out what happened.
Another great book by Sarah Pekkanen. I first listened to the audiobook and the narration was well done. I enjoyed the mystery/thriller so much, I then read the book. I plan on recommending the book to my book club. It will have you going in so many directions. Just when you think you have got it figured out, you’re off in a different direction. I also think the book cover is one of the best!
Thank you #NetGalley, #Macmillanaudio, #StMartin’sPress, #SarahPekkanen and #HouseofGlass for the advance copies for my honest review
Read Completed 5/29/24 | 3.5 stars
Thank you to the publisher, Macmillan Audio / St. Martin's Press, for the audiobook review copy. This did not affect my review in any way.
HOUSE OF GLASS was like definition "okay" thriller. I wasn't really wowed by Sarah Pekkanen's last book, GONE TONIGHT, and this one was a little bit better but it just wasn't anything original nor was it high octane and fast-paced to make up for it. I really enjoyed the co-author team of Sarah Pekkanen & Greer Hendricks... not sure what happened to Greer Hendricks, but those books just had better chemistry for me.
HOUSE OF GLASS wasn't bad, but I've read far too many thrillers to really be impressed by it. I did like the main character and narrator Stella, and I had fun watching the the mystery of the Barclay house unravel. This was a little like THE SILENT PATIENT in the sense that Rose is no longer speaking after the traumatic incident of watching her nanny die. Was it murder? And if so, who did it? Anyone in the house is a suspect, including Rose herself. I didn't feel like this was too close to THE SILENT PATIENT or anything, but it still maybe be of interest for fans of the book! It was just an average thriller that felt pretty tame, in my opinion, and there wasn't really any twist or reveal that shocked me. Thrillers don't always have to have a wild twist, but when the rest of the book isn't really catching me, a good twist does help to raise that rating a bit.
I felt like the author handed the reader a few too many things. I always like to read reviews after I finish the book, and it seems like plenty of people were still shocked by the ending, but I thought a lot of things were spelled out for me. Was I 100% sure? No, it could have been anyone, but the culprit was still well within our sights and I wish there was something pushing us away so it would have been a bit more exciting to reveal.
While this was a bit more suspenseful than GONE TONIGHT, HOUSE OF GLASS still was medium-paced, which again, is fine, but the rest of the details didn't really grab me. I was definitely interested in who killed the nanny and I was entertained the whole read, so that's why I went with 3.5 stars, but it didn't cross that threshold to really hit 4, and I wasn't disengaged enough to lower it to a 3. The author also tried to throw in the hint of a romance at 80% and no no no, that is not necessary whatsoever.
House of Glass is a captivating thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end. As Stella works to learn more about the Barclay family and uncover the truth behind why Rose has become mute, she discovers many more secrets than she expected. Readers are led into a web of deceit, culminating in a shocking revelation that you won’t see coming. With masterful storytelling and intricate plot twists, this novel keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. A must-read for fans of suspense and mystery!
I loved this book. It made me think, it made me feel and it gave me hope. A troubled family and an especially troubled young girl is investigated for custody during a divorce. Her nanny has died in the house, was it an accident or did someone in the house kill her. Twists and turns as she investigates and also delves into her own painful past and the families we chose. Depth and heart and easy to get lost in. It is worth repeating......Loved it!
Excellent on many levels I will suggest this to my students and friends/coworkers as well. Very absorbing and intelligent and multilayered
I LOVED this book! I think this is my favorite Sarah Pekkanen book to date, and definitely one of my favorite thrillers of the year! Twisty, atmospheric, and so gripping, this story of a traumatized little girl, the tragic death of her nanny, and the best interest attorney assigned to help her will keep you guessing until the very end! This was so creepy in moments, but also so well-layered and I loved every element of this story!
In the midst of her parent’s divorce, Nine-year-old Rose witnesses the tragic death of her nanny and now refuses to speak. The police haven’t ruled out murder but all of the suspects appear to have each other as alibis. Stella Hudson, a best interest attorney, is brought in to determine who will receive Rose in the custody battle. Stella quickly realized that this isn’t going to be an easy task. A house where all the glass has been removed, a girl who collects sharp objects, a family willing to lie, and a potential murderer amongst them.
House of Glass was an exciting read that was hard to put down. Stella is brought in on an unusual case which parallels her childhood trauma. To protect Rose she tries to uncover what really happened to the nanny only to find herself in danger of becoming the next victim. There were so many twists and turn in this one made it difficult to guess who the real killer was and if Rose was the “bad seed” among them. A must read for 2024!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC. Thoroughly enjoyed this psychological thriller. While the "bad guy" could only be a few of the characters it kept you guessing on who it would turn out to be. Highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC. This was another solid read by Sarah Pekkanen. Although I wasn’t as enthralled with this book as I was with Gone Tonight, the story was well written and the characters’ feelings and motivations easy to understand. The resolution to the mystery within the story did not blow me away but did make solid sense and there were a few small side twists along the way. Ultimately I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to those who love a good whodunnit type story!
I really enjoyed this book. It kept my attention from start to finish and had some unexpected twists! I was sure I had the case figured out but I was wrong.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!
Stella, a best interest attorney, is assigned to recommend who is awarded custody of Rose once her parents divorce is finalized. To complicate matters further, Rose is mute following the tragic death of her nanny at the family estate. Every member living in this eerie estate with no glass could have killed the nanny and seems to have an agenda of their own. Stella is determined to find the best course of action for this child even though the circumstances are bringing up memories from her troubled childhood.
Great writing with fast-paced plot with a creepy vibe. Engaging story told in short chapters with twists that will keep you guessing. Will definitely recommend this domestic thriller.
Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC in exchange for honest review.
