Halloween is an all-out affair, and the town is having a bit of fun with the holiday. Soon though, a body is going to ruin some of the fun. Mercy and Troy are still adjusting to married life, although things seem to be going well - until Troy's captain is shot and Mercy is injured.
With some news that is going to turn their world upside down, they are also searching for a new home, and the old mansion in the woods has just gone up for sale. They are excited to make this place their own, but someone seems determined to keep them from happiness, and the home they both want.
Oh my goodness, I seriously was biting my nails in some areas in this book. I could not stop or do anything else. Definitely worth the book hangover the next morning!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I absolutely LOVED this audiobook. Loved the characters and the two dogs. Mercy was such a great character. I loved the setting of the old house. Just an all around great book. Awesome job by the narrator. Is this a series? If it is then I need to listen to the others!
Loved it!
I wish I knew this was part of a series, it might've helped me understand the connection between the characters better and relate to them. It was still an enjoyable cozy listen perfect for the season.
HOME AT NIGHT is the fifth book in the Mercy Carr Mysteries by Paula Munier. Set at Halloween time with the spooky atmosphere of a supposedly haunted Victorian house, the multi-faceted mystery only adds to the appeal of the story. Protagonist Mercy Carr and her new husband, Troy, are desperately in need of a larger house. Together with their two large dogs, Elvis and Susie Bear, a cat, a teen mom and baby, and the teen’s boyfriend, Mercy’s small cabin is overly crowded. It seems almost too good to be true when Grackle Tree Farm and its Victorian manor are available for purchase. And when a murder victim shows up in the library, before they’ve even had a chance to examine the house with their realtor, the story takes off at a rapid pace. The author sets the stage with her strong descriptive voice to pull the reader in and take them for a twisty ride. There are several mysteries to be solved in the story, and it intrigued me to find out how they would all fit together with the clues provided. Ms. Munier doesn’t disappoint, and I enjoyed how Mercy and her husband work together alongside their service dogs to track down suspects and fit the pieces together. There was enough action to keep me turning pages until I’d read the last page. If you enjoy great characters with appealing animal sidekicks and knotty mysteries to solve, then I highly recommend Home At Night.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to an audio copy. Narrator Kathleen McInerney did a great job at keeping each character’s voice (both female and male) distinct and easy to follow.
This was a cute cozy however I wish I had known that it was book #5 because I did feel like I was missing the connections of the people, like who knew who, why and how. Also the "spooky" elements weren't all that spooky.
Narrated by Kathleen McInerney who as always does a great job at the narration.

I’m afraid I made a mistake.
When I signed up for this audiobook, I forgot to consider my pickiness when it comes to listening to audiobooks. The person reading the story is a little too light and cheery for me.
Her voice bugs me and therefore I’m having a hard time getting into the story.
Also, the characters are too cheesy for me. The names, the backgrounds, the dogs name.
This story is just not my cup of tea unfortunately. Thank you for the opportunity.
love me some Mercy Carr & Elivs! This was a fun and quick read and this series is now on my list to always read the next installment! I am now adding all of Paula Muier's books to my TBR!
Home at Night by Paula Munier
Narrator, Kathleen McInerny
This a book in the Mercy Carr series. It would probably be hard to try to read this book as a standalone since there are so many ongoing characters including all Mercy’s large group of family and friends and a lot of new characters added in for this specific story. It is very atmospheric for Halloween, creepy and slightly spooky with poets, Druids, and several poisonings, lots of strange
and unlikely events. Also, Mercy is in the midst of having some big changes in her personal life. I wonder about how this will affect future books.
This narrator is one of my favorites and she did an excellent job as usual.
Just ghost stories or a real haunted manor filled with hidden treasures worth killing for? With the help of Elvis, her beloved dog, Mercy Carr must unravel the riddle and find out who is behind it all before she or Elvis are next.
Love, Humor and mystery, Home at Night has them all! A trifecta of storytelling magic. Paula Munier brings a life and personality to each of her characters with dialogue filled with wit and humor while leaving you anxious to find out what Mercy Carr will do or find out next!
A thrilling murder mystery filled with the support of family and friends. This is a must read for any mystery lover or lover of women's fiction.
Very pleasant and interesting story with plenty of atmosphere. Besides the mysteries, wrapped up in the spooky seasonal traditions of autumn, there are elements of art, literature, science, and history. Add to this a cast of mostly likable characters, some smart and adorable furry friends, as well as a touch of small town life, and it was an entertaining read. The audiobook was well done, and I plan to add some of her other audiobooks in the series to my next car trip.
I think Kathleen McInerney did a good job narrating this audiobook. This is the first book I read of Paula Munier. I was happy to find out this book was fine to read as a standalone but now that I have read this one I can't wait to read the ones before it. I fell in love with Mercy and Troy. I also loved their dogs. You know a book will be good when animals are involved. I loved listening to this book in the fall. I can't wait to read more of Paula's books. I definitely recommend this book!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to listen to this ARC for my honest opinion.
This was wholesome, even with a murder. The setting was perfection. I felt like I was there experiencing fall in vermont. This isn't my usual read (or listen) but it was sweet and fun. The narration was wonderful!
This is book 5 in the Mercy & Elvis series, and the first book by Paula Munier that I've read.
I was expecting a very different book based on the description on NetGalley, and boy, am I disappointed. I hate-listened to this through the end, just in case I wasn't being fair or whatever, but this is absolutely not my subgenre. Based on what other reviewers are saying, if you liked the other books in the series, you'll probably like this, but phew. Not for me. Lots of plot distractions that didn't lead anywhere or add much to the story, an awful lot of pro-war machine sentiment etc. Not supernatural, not spooky... just not for me.
I received a free copy of Home at Night by Paula Munier from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
"Home at Night" by Paula Munier is an enchanting escape to the picturesque autumnal landscape of Vermont. I had to plan a road trip up to New England after reading this. The main character, Mercy Carr, once again takes center stage with her unyielding bravery and charm. The story unfurls with unexpected twists that add an exhilarating dimension to the narrative, keeping readers on their toes. This is the fifth book in the Mercy Carr series, but I found that it could also stand-alone. Most notably, the portrayal of the dogs in the story is nothing short of fantastic – a true treat for dog lovers. Munier's "Home at Night" is a compelling read that I'd recommend to anyone in search of an action-packed murder mystery infused with the captivating setting of autumn in a quaint New England town.
Mercy thinks she has found the perfect house for her and her new husband. Only thing is, it is said to be haunted by ghosts of missing children and poets. So, you would think she would change her mind when one of her dogs, Elvis, finds a dead body in the library. But, no! She wants the house more than ever.
I loved Mercy! She does not back down and she has a smart head on her shoulders. Plus, she is a huge dog lover. And the dogs play a big part in this book.
This is not as creepy as I like for my fall reads…but it has a creepy house and I am all about a good old haunting…well maybe it is not THAT haunted but it sure has a history. I enjoyed the history surrounding this house and the mysterious letters and, of course, the family drama! Can’t have family drama without a lot of ancient secrets…and this tale is full of secrets!
I am very familiar with the narrator, Kathleen McInerney. She is one of my favorites. She has the perfect intonation, especially when things get a little intense!
Need a good fall read with a creepy house…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
Thank you @macmillan.audio & @minotaur_books for my gifted audiobook. My thoughts are my own.
If you are looking for a cozy Halloween read, look no further! This delightful book is set in Vermont during Halloween season.
When Mercy and her husband Troy learn that a mysterious old house with an intriguing history is for sale, they immediately look into it, but while they are touring it they discover a dead body! The couple then sets out to solve the murder, but they encounter one deadly obstacle after another! With a haunted house, hidden documents, an intruder, a witch, and more, this one kept me turning the pages to get to the satisfying conclusion. The characters are quirky and likable. This is book 5 in a series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. I chose to listen to this book and Kathleen McInerney does a great job with the narration. She has a beautiful voice and portrays various accents, dialects, males, females, the elderly, and the young very well. I will definitely be checking out the other books in the series!

A cozy mystery with a haunted house and dogs assisting in the detective work? Add in literary allusions and hidden treasure and count me in. This was a fun quick read, with just enough action and tension to keep you engaged, without going so far as to lose the “cozy” feel. A delightful read for spooky season.
Kathleen McInerney did a great job narrating the audiobook.
Thank you Paula Munier, Macmillan Audio, and NetGalley for providing this ALC for review consideration. All opinions expressed are my own.
Home at Night is the fifth book in Paula Munier’s Mercy Carr Mystery series. This story is set in October, about three months after book four, The Wedding Plot. Newlyweds Mercy Carr and Troy Warner are in the market for a larger home. He has sold his revamped fire tower and her lovely cabin is just too small for those in residence.
Getting a heads up that Grackle Tree Farm, once the home of famous poet Euphenia Whitney-Jones and the site of many of her famous poems, is going on the market now that the last family member has passed so Mercy and Elvis go to do an early viewing. The home had been the site of much sadness, beginning with the founding family, then in the Whitney-Jones family with the severe falling out of Euphemia and her sister Maude over Maude eloping with Euphemia’s fiancé Michael.
The homestead holds secrets, and those secrets are the cause of the body Mercy and Elvis find in the library upon their first walk through. This presents a new mystery for Mercy, Troy, and Thrasher to solve, that is until an armed assailant downs Thrasher and wounds Mercy. This is the story’s turning point and it only gets better from here!
Ms. Munier is a master of weaving these stories. The plot is tight and twisted, with new surprises at every turn. As the reader follows the trail, new and interesting characters, unsuspected diversions, and breadcrumb clues are embedded throughout the tale. As Mercy puts these clues together, sometimes needing to twist the puzzle pieces until they come together and click, the reader is on a breath holding ride. I very much enjoyed this book and I wholeheartedly recommend it!
DNF very early on
It’s not that there’s really anything hugely wrong with this book, but I wanted more of a thriller than a lighthearted mystery featuring animal sidekicks, and I also didn’t realize that it was the fifth novel in a series. Not my thing right now. I’m sure others who are fans of this genre or very specific type of story will enjoy it.
4 stars
This is a surprisingly well constructed mystery with enough twists and turns and more of a PG-13 vibe than I'm used to reading, especially during the month of October! While I have a pretty consistent rule about not reading subsequent books in a series first, I broke that rule this time, and while I definitely want to go back and read the first four, I'm also happy I deviated from the usual plan. This was a fun read even without some of the more detailed backstory.
Mercy and Troy have somewhat recently started their lives together in a legal capacity, but they don't get much of a break from other people's trouble. When they go to view their potential new home, they stumble upon a mystery that is begging to be resolved (and, first, made much more complicated).
I really appreciate how developed these characters and their backstory are, especially considering the genre. Even better? The focus on these characters' awesome large dogs and on literature. These are a few of my most favorite things!
This is a fun read that folks who are a little more on the gentle side of mysteries can also enjoy. I'll be looking into this writer's back catalogue next!
