Thank you Annick Press for this advanced reader copy.

This debut picture book is beautiful to look at. Which alone would make it one of many beautifully illustrated books. What makes this stand out is the conversation between the illustrations and the text. Illustrator Natalí Barbani impeccably brings to life the way anxiety can feel through flowers, string, and movement. Which is a splendid match for Luciana DeLuca's words. Which are not densely overwritten to feel like a manual, but are instead engaging and accessible. It's also not tied to a specific event that could cause anxiety, like a new school, but is instead more about what the feelings feel like in your body.

There is also a page for adults in the back as a resource. I'd recommend this book for any young children dealing with anxiety or depression.

A young girl is scared, of feeling down and lonely. The light goes away as the darkness creeps in all around. She feels small and insignificant, all awhile she wants to scream out loud. What she feels is being anxious. A beautiful picture book showing how one can overpower and overcome anxiety. Asking for help is good, and trying different ways to conquer it, is always beneficial. I adored the palette of colored pencils (I think?), drawing the visual images of anxiety. A true and helpful book for kids

I love that this book helps kids identify what's going on and what they are feeling, and teaches them ways to cope with it, but doesn't feel medical or preachy.

As an educator, I have seen how anxious kids are these days and how it affects them. I think that this simple book holds beautiful truths that kids with anxiety would benefit from. The strategies listed in the back of the book are ones that I have been taught to use to help kids handle anxiety. Those could be helpful for parents who haven't been trained like I have.

Overall, this is a simple yet beautiful book on what you can do as a child when you have anxiety.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.

“Anxious” is a brief exploration into what it feels like to be anxious. A little girl describes her feelings and how she learns strategies to help her cope with her anxiety. The illustrations evoke the topsy-turvy world of an anxious child using a neutral palette. An afterword for adult caregivers provides additional information for helping a young child learn to deal with feelings of anxiousness.

Author Luciana DeLuca does a fantastic job putting to words the feelings of a young child. “Anxious” is a welcome entry into the growing selection of books on the subject of children’s mental health.

This book is great for young children and adults to start that conversation about what anxiety feels like. Simple strategies such as taking a deep breath can help right away.

A book about what it means to be anxious. I like how the anxiety made everything dark and when the girl conquered it, there was color. It was pretty short so I do think there could’ve been more, but I liked how they treated anxiety so that kids could understand.

This book is gorgeous and spot on. It explains beautifully the way anxiety manifests in many people. It puts in words and pictures that which is sometimes hard to explain. It also gives some great tips for overcoming those feelings. Great for children who don't quite know what to do when they feel that way. Great notes for parents in the back as well.
