This delightfully quirky picture book is truly like nothing else I've read. Beatrice Alemagna has such a clear understanding how children view the world, and I think kids will love this book because of that.

This book was a very interesting concept and one that I know most kids encounter. Overall though the book just wasn't for me.

A girl falls and hits her knee on the cobblestone - she cries. There's a lot of blood. She gets a scab, which she names Pepper (after the dog she doesn't have) and is waiting for Pepper to go away. And then Pepper is gone, without notice. This is a very realistic expression of how scars work.

Pepper and Me is a super sweet story about a little girl and her scab. Childhood can be weird and absurd sometimes, but a child’s imagination can open worlds of understanding and self-reflection. Giving things that scare us a name creates familiarity and acceptance which enables us to see clearly and make good choices. Pepper and Me develops this concept with a heartfelt story and beautiful illustrations.
