I had the pleasure of listening to this audiobook, and it's a solid 4 stars from me.
Phifer weaves a chilling tale that had me on the edge of my seat (and occasionally peeking behind it). The atmospheric setting on West 10th Street adds an extra layer of spookiness, making it a perfect read for those who love a good spooky story.
The characters were well-developed, and I found myself invested in their fates as the mystery unfolded. The author's writing style keeps you hooked from start to finish, with just the right amount of suspense and supernatural elements to keep you guessing.
While some parts felt a tad predictable, the overall experience was thoroughly enjoyable. A big thank you to NetGalley for the giveaway opportunity, allowing me to discover this hauntingly good read. If you're a fan of paranormal mysteries with a dash of spine-tingling suspense, this one's worth a spot on your bookshelf. 👻📚
When Detective Maria Miller has a new case and straight away, she senses this isn’t going to be a run of the mill case. The brutality of the murder is enough to shock even an experienced detective like Maria. The killing is identical to the murder that happened 60 years before. In both cases, a satanic ritual was performed. Body parts were taken from the victims and never found.
Has the killer returned, or is this a copycat killer ?
I love a dual timeline. This was done really well. I listened to this on audio and found it an easy listen, and I flew through it in a day. I loved the supernatural element to this story, and I am looking forward to continuing this series.
Thank you to Netgalley, Storm Publishing, and Helen Phifer for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Usually stories with a paranormal touch are not my kind of thing but somehow this title intrigued me and I was curious.
So the Haunting on West 10th Street is the 1st-book in the Detective Maria Miller Police Procedural Mystery series by Helen Phifer. We are introduced to Detective Miller and her partner, Frankie. They investigate a crime in the attic of a Greenwich brownstone, where decades earlier a beautiful actress was murdered in the same way.
I liked how Detective Miller reacted to the whole situation as she doesn't believe in the paranormal either.!!
I really enjoyed the narration by Stephanie Canon
Thanks #NetGalley #Dreamscape Select, Storm Publishing for this audiobook
This was a great October horror read! Definitely creepy with an interesting plot. I do wish the ending with the exorcism was more detailed and drawn out. It ended abruptly and was a bit anticlimactic. I did enjoy it and would recommend this book.
If you like the supernatural crime story vibe that spans decades in a creepy old house then this is the book for you. Going between a murder that took place decades ago and what looks to be a copycat case happening now, follow the story as it looks to something much more sinister being involved and will leave you with goosebumps on the back of your neck.
The Haunting on West 10th Street by Helen Phifer is a perfect spooky season read with an engaging narrator. Overall it was a 4 star read for me because it took me a few tries of restarting the book to get into it, but once I was in, it was very good. I did have a hard time keeping all the character's backstories straight at first as well.
Maria and her partner Frank are called to the scene of a gruesome murder in a building on 10th street. Little do they know, this murder is tied to one that happened 50 years ago. At that time something supernatural was invited in and never left. The owner of the house, which is now apartments, has done everything in her power to keep people safe, but the entity continues to get stronger, especially since it has someone living to do its biding. Maria and Frank have no leads until 3 years later when the 50 year old murder is brought to light. Can they help save the residents in the house on 10th street and themselves?
Thank you, NetGalley, for the copy of the audiobook. All opinions are my own. #HelenPhifer #thehouseonwest10thstreet #NetGalley #DreamscapeMedia
Great crime thriller. Just enough spooky, not too overdone. Would recommend. Thanks to NetGalley for the arc!
I chose this to read in October because it's a spooky month and this looked like s promising supernatural thriller. Told in dual timelines and multiple POVs made for a fast read/listen. It was creepy but I didn't get the thriller vibe off it as much. Parts did feel rushed. But it was a good read overall. I'm interested to see where else the series would go.
I only got to listen to the first 1/3 of this on as my NetGalley app had to be deleted and when I redownloaded it I couldn’t get this title due to the fact it was past archive date…. But I was enjoying it so far. It was a little campy and hard to follow at times with multiple POVs and timelines, but overall a fun spooky listen.
THE HAUNTING ON WEST 10TH STREET by Helen Phifer is read by Stephanie Cannon and felt like a perfect Halloween Haunted House option!
While I did enjoy the spooky and sinister tones of the is story, it did feel just a bit campy to me. It reminded me of a movie that had Ryan Reynolds in it, which if you know, then you know. That correlation made it less sinister than I think it would have been otherwise.
I thought Cannon did a great job narrating and that definitely made my enjoyment of this story fuller. Hearing the creepiness build was great!
This story had a dual timeline that brought together two grisly murders. Detective Maria Miller must discover what is happening, which is clearly more than a simple murder.
Go in blind, enjoy the dark and creepy, and realize this will be the probable start to a paranormal detective series. I am just not sure this will be for me, but I enjoyed the listen this weekend!

for this audiobook and letting me share my thoughts. This is available now from Dreamscape Select now!
Detectives Maria and Frankie are called in on a cold case. It has a supernatural twist.
This was a good scary season read. Multiple storylines to follow that eventually all come together and you are able to piece together everything that was going on.
I wish there had been more development of the characters, but otherwise a good October read.
I liked the audio version. Made it creepier.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape Select for an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
It was probably my own fault, but I did have a little bit of difficulty in the very beginning of the book following the different POV's and different timelines. It could have been due to listening to it on audio and not visually seeing the chapter titles. I did eventually get the hang of it by Chapter 7/8 and started to enjoy the book a bit more.
I don't typically read supernatural thrillers, but wanted a good spooky read for the Halloween season.
If you are someone who is not interested in reading hauntings with references to satanic rituals and ouija boards, I would probably advise against this book.
Final thoughts for The Haunting on West 10th Street - I really enjoyed the characters. The narrator of the audio book was decent, not my favorite. Used a voice for the men that made them seem EXTREMELY old. I personally didn't totally understand Maria's romantic interest with Harrison and probably could have done without it. Had no issues with the writing whatsoever, I thought it was a well written supernatural thriller. I would probably be interested in reading more with Maria is this became a series which is what the ending of this novel alludes to.
Thank you to Helen Phifer, NetGalley, and Dreamscape Select for the ARC.
The Haunting on West 10th Street is the 1st-book in the Detective Maria Miller Police Procedural Mystery series by Helen Phifer. In this story we follow Detective Miller and her partner, Frankie, as they investigate a brutal crime in the attic of a Greenwich brownstone, where decades earlier a beautiful actress was murdered in the same way. The detectives are puzzled by the disturbing similarities between the crimes occurring in this house. How could they be connected? Do they just have a sadistic copycat on their hands, or something more sinister?
Immediately upon entering the brownstone, Maria feels something dark. It's a tickle in her senses; unpleasant and unsettling. The dramatic staging of the crime scene only enhances these feelings. In both the past and present cases, body parts were removed from the victims and not recovered. Additionally, evidence of satanic rituals have been found. Who could possibly want to recreate something so evil?
This story is told using a dual timeline. We follow Maria and Frankie in the present, but we also get a historical perspective featuring the events leading up to the previous murder in the house. Lastly, we do get a modern perspective from an unknown individual, who appears to be our baddie.
I enjoyed getting the multi-perspectives, as well as the history. Although I did find the past sections a little slower-paced than the modern perspectives. With this being said, I still enjoyed the fact that it was told this way and I feel like it gave a lot of needed insight into the property and the characters involved.
The brownstone on West 10th feels like a haunting presence in this story. It becomes a character unto itself and I always appreciate when an author can provide us with such a vivid sense of place.
There is quite a bit of focus on the partnership between Maria and Frankie. They've been together for a long time and you can tell that they both care deeply for one another, but with Frankie's marriage failing, could there be something more?
I know some Readers won't care for the slight romance plot that's woven throughout this story, but for me, I found it made the characters feel more realistic. When you're working with someone as closely as these two are, over a number of years, there's bound to be some types of complicated feelings intrinsic to that relationship.I didn't feel like the author overplayed that, or let it overshadow the investigative aspects of the story. For me, it was blended in well and felt natural.
I did have the chance to listen to the audiobook for this one and I definitely recommend it as a format for this story. The back-and-forth between the timelines was handled well and the narration is fantastic.
Overall, this was super entertaining. I vibed well with Maria as a character and am definitely looking forward to going along on future investigations with these detectives. The ending was such a great set-up for the continuation of the series. I can't wait to see what will come their way next.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys darker, Police Procedural Mysteries. Particularly, if you are a Horror fan like me, this may work really well for your tastes. Phifer definitely has a knack for incorporating some paranormal aspects into her mysteries.
Thank you to the publisher, Storm Publishing, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I can't wait to continue on with this series!
Maria Miller and her partner Frankie Conroy are homicide detectives in the Big Apple. One day they are called out for a bad one - the corpse is only a torso, with blood surrounding it and no head nor limbs anywhere. Then Maria opens the fridge...
Three years later and the case is still unsolved. One day their boss pulls them into their office. Apparently the boss' daughter is writing a paper on cold cases including this one. Oh, and by the way, a nearly identical murder happened in the same house - but in 1952. A satanic ritual looks to have been performed at deaths. Could it be the same person? Or is there just something about the house?
Part mystery and part horror, this was a great story. At first I thought the dual timelines from present day and 1952 were a bit much, but it ended up being exactly what the story needed. I liked the characters and look forward to seeing them again. All in all, a fun book!
As the title suggests, this supernatural crime thriller is the first in a new detective series of “strange occurrences”. Detective Maria Miller and her partner Franky have been working together for years. When a cold case lands on their desk, they are thrust into a supernatural investigation that they didn’t see coming.
The story is told through various timelines and perspectives. It was a terrific October “haunted house” read that sent chills up my spine. There were some gruesome scenes and a decent amount of tension and scare factor.
I only wish that the characters were better developed. They were lacking in depth so it was difficult to care about what happened to them. I’m confident though that as the series continues, we will get to know these characters better. The plot moved along at a galloping pace and the audio performance was dynamic. It’s so hard to find a good balance of crime and supernatural so I’m psyched that this author will be writing more. Looking forward to reading more of this series.
A gracious thank you to #NetGalley #DreamscapeSelect and #StormPublishing for an advanced audiobook of #TheHauntingOnWest10thStreet in exchange for an honest review.
***** I received this free audiobook from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fun book to listen to. A demonic presence from the 1950’s returns to present day and starts gaining strength. Now characters from the past join some from now to put it in its place.
As this was an audiobook I will mention the narration was easy to listen to and added to the enjoyment of the story.
This audiobook ranges over decades and brings you up to date with the conclusion. The beginning starts with a family that like most families has its differences but these turn into horror and murder. In the present time two New York detectives keep going back to a murder three years previously which are horribly familiar to the 1950s murder and then they are entangled in another murder attempt.
The book is read very well and is enjoyable and quite freaky very suitable for Halloween. Totally enjoyed and would recommend.
I really enjoyed this book. My first of Helen Phifer's. It was an audiobook version read by Stephanie Canon and she is a fantastic American narrator and I could not fault the small piece of English narration either! The book was an exciting thriller and supernatural mystery rolled into one. It's the first book (I presume going to be a series) of Maria and Frankie, two cops who have an amazing work relationship and mutual love for each other(thats on the back burner). There are 2 murders separated by tens of years but also with a supernatural element.
The relationship between Maria abd Frankie is lovely and the story really gets you wanting more.
I really hope Helen keeps a supernatural thread and Stephanie as the narrator. The audio was fantastic.
Thank you to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for an Arc in return for an honest review.
The Haunting on West 10th Street was named very appropriately, it was quite haunting!
One thing I adored about this audio book was the authors ability to tell an organized story. It can be really easy to get lost in a dual timeline story, especially in the audiobook format, but I didn't have an issue with that during this book!
I do think I can't give an accurate rating for this book, as I don't think this type of thriller/horror story is for me! It was very much more ritualistic and spiritual horror, and not as much ghost/haunting horror, which is much more my ally.
Overall, I enjoyed the authors way of story telling and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another one of their books, I just think this subgenre wasn't for me!
The Haunting on West 10th Street
Detective Maria Miller #1
Helen Phifer
The house gave off evil vibes. It felt as if the house had a life of its own with an evil presence inside. A brutal murder took place there about 60 years ago. An actress was murdered in what appeared to be a satanic manner.
There was another brutal murder three years ago, identical to the one committed 60 years ago. Has the killer returned? Could this be a copycat? As brave and courageous as Maria is this murder terrifies her, but she won’t let that stop her from finding the culprit.
There are two timelines in the tale, current and in the past. It worked well in this tale. The reader should be aware that this tale is rather brutality, satanism, ritual sacrifice, and sadistic murder.
This is the first book in the new series, Detective Maria Miller. I enjoyed the relationship between Maria and her partner, Frankie Conroy. This is an interesting and entertaining book.
