This book was an easy, breezy read. In my opinion it had the right amount of spook for me, as I'm a novice at paranormal/supernatural thriller genre. I loved the FMC, Maria was strong, driven detective dropped in this supernatural, creepy case and it couldnt be more fun! There's dual timelines through the book and it was done superbly well, cutting back exactly when you're about to jump off the chair, needing to find out what happens next. The love interests are done okay, wished there would be more depth to that; however they set up for a sequel so I believe there'll be more to come! I can't wait!
Great, fun read for this time (fall) of the year! Don't miss it !
This has been one of the audio books I've enjoyed the most that I've listened too. I would give 3.5 stars in the rating scale.
The story is about an unsolved murder mystery with a paranormal element in it and a little bit of thrill. Seems like it has a lot of themes going on surrounding the day-to-day life of the 2 main characters, NYPD detectives Maria and Frankie.
Thank you NetGalley for the advance audio book copy!
Read if you enjoy these tropes:
- Multiple time frames
- Supernatural/paranormal theme
- Unsolved mysteries
I really didn’t think I missed mystery/thrillers as much as I did, but this was so refreshing to read. The world-building was done really well, the author brought the setting to life and was able to bring in the creepy vibes with the plot. I liked how the author was able to bring the supernatural to life without taking it away from the mundane world of a detective as well.
I will say not all the characters were a hit for me, some of the background and/or the side characters fell a little flat. However, everyone fell into the plot of the story rather well, each person having their role in the book.
The Narrator (Stephanie Canon) did such a good job bringing this book to life. The different voices for each character and the voice acting brought the emotion out with any line she said.
I find this novel being absurd from the logical point - limited critical thinking, inconsistent plot, zero knowledge about the exorcisms and the Catholic Church and its teachings about this (or other) area; immature heroes who really do not know what they want and go for the next pleasure like children do.
Yet - I was entertained. The logic is only one part of the reader´s experience - another one is the catchability. So, while I was headdesking from time to time because of the logical lapsuses and naivity, I was also having fun.
Reading Between the Wines book review #123/115(met goal in Sept!) for 2023:
Rating: 1 🍷
Book: The Haunting on West 10th Street
Author: Helen Phifer
Available Now!!
Sipping thoughts: I love Helen Phifer, especially her Detective Morgan Brooks series. I did not like this book however. I kind of feel like I must have missed something because it felt like nothing new happened after the main event. I am not a horror fan but I will read anything by Phifer. I know my opinion is one that is in the minority which I am happy about because I really want this book to do well.
Cheers and thank you to @DreamscapeSelect and @Netgalley for an advanced copy of @TheHauntingOnWest10thStreet.

This is an intriguing book about a multigenerational haunting that involves possession and murder. The formula is that of a male ‘ female cop duo investigating a cold case - a comfortable and familiar foundation - but branches out into haunting, demons, and the Catholic Church. The author knows how to tell a story and pulls the reader in immediately. The ending hints at a possible cold case series based on supernatural or unexplainable crimes.
This Book was so much fun to read and the perfect book for Halloween!! Helen Phifer has written a scary scary book that includes murder by demon, beautiful women, a house on the Lower West side of Manhattan and super interesting characters. I loved it! I received the audio version from Netgalley, and loved the Voice Over artist! This is a quick read and the perfect frightening story for a dark night.!!!
The Haunting on West 10th Street;
It was okay, nothing to write home about, I thought it was a bit predicable, nothing to what I thought it was gonna be from looking at the title and front cover.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance audiobook copy of The Haunting on West 10th Street by Helen Phifer in exchange for an honest review. When I started this book it felt like a Christmas Lifetime movie and since it's October, I wasn't in the mood. I decided to listen a little longer to give it a fair shot. All of a sudden the book was over and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was more spooky than sappy and I got really invested.

The Haunting On West 10th Street is a great supernatural spooky season read. This one is fast paced and it is a fun story to read about, I just found myself wanting more creepiness.
•
This one is written in dual timelines - in the present and also in 1952. This one starts out super strong with a very horrific and gory murder where the victim is totally dismembered. I was super intrigued. Then we come to find that this case is related to one that happened in 1952?! Sign. Me. Up. I was all in for this one. The shifting of the timelines was easy to follow and gave just the perfect amount of insight as to what was happening.

Frankie and Maria are our main detectives and these two are an absolute hoot. I loved them and their chemistry. I enjoyed how the other characters were introduced and how they connected to this story. Phifer brought a bunch of different elements into this one, and I think they all worked together well to create a cohesive story. She uses mystery, supernatural, satanic rituals, police procedural and even adds in some romance romance.

Where this one is lacking to me is the actual scare level. I really expected to be creepers out by this one, or at least have my heart rate elevate a bit. However it did not. There are so many element of supernatural and human demise that this had potential for some serious goosebumps and suspense, however where these could have been possible it seemed to be overly simplified and almost rushed.. The ending definitely felt way too rushed for me. It was like the anticipation was starting to build and then the next instant it was over.

I listened to this one on audio and it was narrated by Stephanie Canon and she was great. I really liked her different voices for characters.
•
Overall, I would recommend this one to people just starting out in the horror/ crime thriller world. It would ease you into the more intense stuff.

Huge thank you to NetGalley, Helen Phifer, Dreamscape Select and Storm Publishing for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the author, narrator, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-audio of this title in exchange for my review.
Sadly, I can't finish this book. I was very excited about this one, based on the summary description. I thought this would be a good spooky story, but it's just a mess. I've completed more than half of the book and the writing style seems inconsistent, the character development is lacking, the changing time frames is beyond confusing and all of the references to Paganism, Satanism, the occult and such feels like left over comments from the 1980's. (And actually feels rather obnoxious and offensive to those who might have the beliefs.)
I rarely give up on books, and I've never given up on an ARC before, but I just feel like it's not worth my time.
This is a 1 star book for "did not like it". I won't be recommending this one to anyone I know.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the audio version.
I don't think I have ever read a book like this. It has a mixture of two horrific murders that are 60 years apart and also a spiritual paranormal events also. I really enjoyed it and could not stop listening to it. By the way it ended we are going to have a series?! If so I can't wait.
The Haunting on West 10th Street by Helen Phifer was the perfect creepy read for October. It had haunted house vibes, paranormal elements, an Ouija board, and a well-rounded police investigation. I loved the main character, Detective Maria Miller, and her relationship with fellow detective Frankie was well written.
Some parts of the plot were glossed over and did feel like a shortcut. However, this book did keep me entertained until the very end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced audiobook copy.
This book was extremely unsettling! It was a mix of horror and crime thriller. Detectives are attempting to solve gruesome murders, but also with a touch of the paranormal with Ouija boards and demons as each murder was part of a satanic ritual. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This thriller was the perfect amount of creepy and terrifying. The elements of the unnatural were well done and were believable which made the book terrifying. I enjoyed Maria and look forward to more of her cases.
This was my first book by this author and I certainly enjoyed it. This was part horror and part crime thriller involving paranormal elements like devil worship and more.... This is a part of series so I am eager to read the next books which comes out next. ^_^
•The story is narrated in dual timeline~ past & present which works wonders at the end to come together. For me it was more creepy rather than spooky, which is totally fine as I was really invested in the whole process of solving the investigation alongside Detective Maria and Frankie.
This book was different than what I normally read/listen to. I really enjoyed that it had a mix of everything from light romance to paranormal activity. One thing I did not like was that I felt that it was a bit too descriptive in a few scenes, and my weak stomach did not like that (lol). I really enjoyed the switching from the present day to the past, even though you had to pay close attention to understand what setting it was in in any given moment. The story was very well written and had me wanting more. I will be reading the rest of this series whenever it is written!
It was a first paranormal thriller I've ever read and it was pretty good! Really kept you on your toes! The narrator was really good too. The only complain I have is that it was written in third person, which I'm just not used to..
Had me sucked in from the very beginning. I loved the 2 New Yorks, 1952 NYC and present day NYC.
I am not usually into haunted house, demon possessed type of books but I actually really enjoyed listening to this.
The narrator was great. I loved all of the characters.
Will definitely be reading/listening to more of the Detective Maria Miller series
Thank you NetGalley for this ALC!
I did not read the description before I choose to listen, and boy was I pleasantly surprised! It was the perfect listen for a stormy, cold fall day! I was so glad that this was a true haunting/demon occupied house, and not a "its all in her/his mind" plot.
Maria and Frankie are Stabler and Benson of the supernatural world. I love the sexual tension, and their friendship.
The first installment in this series is one that will keep me listening/reading.
