This was not what I expected. With the title The Haunting on West 10th Street, I expected horror, or at the very least, a spooky ghost story. The one part where I thought it could get good and scary, was glossed over and finished so quickly that what little tension was built dissipated so quickly that there as not time to be scared. This leaves us with a cold case that is eerily similar to a current case and that is solved in a lackluster manner. This was trying to be too many things and ended up being not much of anything except for a few unanswered questions. I wish I had liked it more; there was so much potential there.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #DreamscapeSelect for the ARC #TheHauntingOnWest10thStreet by #HelenPhifer. Demons, sacrificing and murder make up this chilling book that I could not put down. Absolutely loved it!
This story takes place in two different time periods as a "spirit" kills people in the same fashion during both. Detective Maria, present day, sets out to figure out what is going on and discovers how the spirit is linked to West 10th Street and all the killings.
A shocking and brutal murder identical to a murder of a beautiful actress decades ago. With missing body parts and satanic rituals Detective Maria Miller must find out if there is a copycat killer or something more ominous at play.
I don't typically pick up many "horror" books but so glad I decided to listen to this one. It was just creepy enough to give me the shivers while exciting enough to keep me listening on.
Action packed with horror and a slice of romance Helen Phifer leaves us wanting to immediately move on to the next book. Great protagonist and antagonist development that allowed the narrator to flow very freely along the storyline. Definitely will be looking for more books by Helen Phifer!
As detective Maria Miller dives into a new case, she is not prepared for what will greet her and her partner. The murder they are looking into has too many similarities into a decades old murder. Throw in a missing persons case, their new case looks like it may just close out a couple more.
I absolutely LOVED this book!! I did not want to put it down. I loved the two main detectives. They have a great relationship, and the banter back and forth was sincere. These are characters you can relate to - and want to see more from!
Now, I cannot wait to see the additional books in this series. Fantastic book, with a few twists and turns, and bumps in the night.
Give me all the haunted house vibes!! The Haunting on West 10th Street was the perfection book to read during spooky season.
Two identical murders which happened YEARS apart lead detective Maria on a paranormal hunt for the killer - but can you find that which is paranormal?
Looking forward to seeing what Maria tackles on her next adventure.
The narrator did a fine job.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for this advanced audio copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I love spooky thrillers, I love cop dramas. Though I thought that this book checked both boxes, it did not really work for me. Both detectives were really weird in their personal and professional lives. I don't want to give out spoilers, but the clues that led Maria to discover the identity of the murdered girl the second time around? That was just too easy and should have been a part of their initial investigation.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
This has been the perfect addition to my spooky season TBR! Kudos to the narrator for a fine job done! And the book *chef’s kiss*! It reminds me of a Cara Hunter style of read.
My thanks to Net Galley, Dreamscape and Storm Publishing for allowing me this advanced audio to review.
I'm on the fence about this story. Good narrator. I liked the modern murder story but it got too confusing with the dual timeline comparing to the present murder. Great listen for Halloween coming up but too much going on to focus.
It was a good book and the narrator was good too. I had a little trouble getting into the story because I was so confused with the time line. I don't know if that was because of the audiobook or not, but I had to stop about halfway through because I couldn't get into the story
Helen Phifer's blend of paranormal, horror and police procedural goes back and forth in time, featuring the tough, independent, experienced NYPD Detective Maria Miller, who believes only in cold hard facts, but here she is forced to reassess her beliefs when confronted with the kind of shocking, haunting demonic horror that once seen, cannot be unseen. I listened to this on audio, it is 7 hours and 18 minutes long, and ably narrated by Stephanie Canon, a solid 4 stars that kept me listening right through to the end. Miller, and her long time police partner, Frank Conroy, attend the brutally gruesome crime scene in an old brownstone, sickened by the dead woman's torso, headless and limbless, but there is something more, a disturbing awareness there is another chilling presence lingering in the shadows.
Later on, Maria and Frank are to find out that a similar crime had occurred over 52 years ago, with the murder of an actress, who had befriended her lover's daughter, Emelia, only for Emelia's brother to have killed her in a sacrificial, satanic ceremony, using an grimoire to summon a terrifying demon. Their boss asks them to investigate the older crime too, which had resulted in which the brother had been committed to an asylum, and who died there. Maria scurries to the police archives to try and find out what exactly had happened all those years ago, and with a sense of deep unease, discover the police had barely conducted an investigation. Grave danger comes her way as she links up with 2 elderly women who had been present at the earlier horror.
This will appeal to many readers looking for unsettling and disturbing books for the darkening Autumn nights, particularly with Halloween coming up, and for the upcoming Winter season. This dark and intense story from Phifer was okay, it kept me entertained right up to the end, but I think personally, I was probably looking for a little more depth and stronger writing at times and I did not really click with Maria's romance with the very wealthy guy. I am aware, however, that many other readers have loved this more, so I would encourage you to check out their reviews. I can recommend the audio, I think many will enjoy Canon's narration. Many thanks to Netgalley for ALC.
Man!!! I can not wait to see what book two throws into Maria and Frankie’s laps! This was so amazing and well told! It your looking for a spooky read that will have you thinking…. This book is it! I was given to opportunity to listen to the audiobook from NetGalley and I’m very thankful!! The narration was great and the story was just captivating! I couldn’t wait to listen!! Now on to investigate when book two will be available! Thank you!!
Two horrific crimes separated 70 years apart. What unimaginable evil ties them together?
Three years ago detective Maria Miller is called to a homicide so disturbing she still can’t erase the images from her mind. Her and her partner Frankie discover a shocking scene - a headless and limbless torso of a woman. Blood is everywhere, and the only potential identifying factor is a beautiful rose and vine tattoo.
Now in the present, Maria and Frankie’s boss wants them to reopen this cold case. Remarkably this crime is similar to one committed 70 years ago!
The more they dig into the two cases, the more uneasy they become.
Could a Ouija Board, a book on satanic rituals, and human sacrifice have brought forth a demonic entity?
This is one you may not want to read right before bed!!
This is a great supernatural thriller/horror with likeable characters who must put aside their skepticism and accept the help of two woman who were there for the first crime. I loved the dual timelines and the close (but not sexual) relationship between the two police detectives!
Read this with the lights on!
Many thanks to @netgalley and Storm Publishing for this advanced audio in exchange for my honest review.
This was a quick listen and kept my interest, but it was overall just okay. It’s not my usual cup of tea so others who like more supernatural books might enjoy this more.
I liked the police procedural aspect of this, and enjoyed Maria and Frankie’s relationship. I like how the the author set up the way these stories will continue at the end.
The title is a little misleading, as it wasn’t quite a a haunting. I probably wouldn’t have picked up a boom about demons but it was entertaining enough to continue listening to.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the advanced copy in the change for my honest review.
This was a wild ride and I was totally here for it! I KNEW his wife was cheating on him w/his brother!! I love the combo of police work and fantasy/horror. THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU! This was my 1st book by Helen Phifer but will definitely not be my last! I can't wait to read the next installment of this series!

The story is told in two time lines, present day and in the past - 1952.
Three years ago, NYPD Detective Maria Miller and her partner Frankie Conroy were investigating a case where a headless body was found in a brownstone on West 10th Street.
Whodunit was never found. Now, Supervisor Addison has reassigned them this cold case as Addison’s daughter Gina is a reporter who has uncovered some very interesting things.
It seems back in 1952 there were human sacrifices in an attempt to summon a demon.
Emilia Green is the owner of the house on West 10th; she is now 87 years old and lived in the house back in 1952. She has a role in both the present and past timelines.
I read the reviews on this before requesting it and they are great.
The genre is listed as Horror, Mystery, and Paranormal
I am a big psychological thriller fan and am okay with paranormal not so much horror. However, I soon found the genre was all over the place. The only thing consistent is that NYPD’s finest macho nasty language never stops. ( I guess am not cool ~I find profanity mean and not necessary.)
I did finish the story but I didn’t love it.
It ends with a bit of a teaser with Addison creating “The Strange Case Review Team’ but so far there isn’t a ‘Ghosts of New York Book #2. Those of you who liked this are surely on the lookout for 'The Ghosts of New York #2' next in this series.
Want to thank NetGalley and Dreamscape Select-Storm Publishing for this early audiobook.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for October 19, 2023.
A fast-paced paranormal detective mystery that spooky you real bad. A recent crime scene has unearthed a long-forgotten case from 60 years ago. Almost every 10 years a woman dies in mysterious ways and the evidence suggests there foul things at play here. A cop lead mystery that involves, devils, incantations and blood sacrifices. The book did manage to keep me off the trail for the first half.
I could sniff something fishy from time to time, but the book does not give you any points to validate your theory. The ending felt a little oversimplified to me, but it works for most of the cases (defeating the devil is not that hard after all).

I read this for my #spooktoberbookbingo prompt haunted house setting.
This story was a strange mix of creepy and light. I feel like most of the books I read about hauntings or graphic killings are more atmospheric in their portrayal of these subjects, and this one felt like an odd mix between a much lighter side and a much darker side. I kind of struggled to take the darker aspects seriously. I did enjoy the overall plotline, and would be curious to read more if this becomes the first in a series, but I have m fixed feelings about this particular story.
Thanks to NetGalley for the arc!
To start, supernatural mysteries aren’t my usual reads. This book was really good though! It was mostly set in the current day storyline but had glimpses back into the past. It tied together well! Fast paced, easy to read! Some parts I may have found odd with the supernatural aspect, but overall I enjoyed this!
This book was super creepy ! — it took me some time to get invested and understand all the characters but once I got a grasp on everything I really enjoyed the book and became invested in the outcome— and the back story leading to the current situation. Demonic possession of a house — a demon promising men - to be loved by women — in return for being the demon being released but in order to do that women had to be murdered . The narrator was excellent with the audiobook and was able to easily make distinguishing voices for the many characters .
Thank you to Netgalley and Dreamscape Select, Storm Publishing . This is my honest review .
