A pearl of a read! Being a fan of dual-timeline stories, I was delighted to read the latest story Lorna. The locations here are everything, perfectly matching the characters.
I was asked to review by NetGalley, this was in dual timelines- World War 2 and modern times. I love Suffolf so this was a great setting- well researched. This had good twists and turns with oh my goodness I was not expecting that.
The characters - Amy in 2011 and Kitty in 1944. Grandaughter and Grandmother. Kitty falls in love with an American Airman stationed in her village ( my grandmother's Sister (I suppose my great Aunt whom I never knew had an affair with a Polish Pilot and I would dearly love to have known the story but my grandmother never spoke to her after that!!)
I have never read any of this authors books so will now seek her out over the long school holidays.
This romance about grief, war, secrets and families is set in Suffolk, England in 1944 and 2011.. The story of Kitty and Charlie in 1844 as well as Amy and Jack in 2011 captivated me. Stories set in England during WWII have always been my favorite reads and this novel will go down as one of them. My thanks to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for allowing me to review this book. Another dual timeline story from Lorna Cook that it is beautifully written. Sam an American pilot posted to Suffolk in 1944, meets Kitty, a local girl.
In 2011, Kitty's granddaughter meets an American visiting the US base, now disused with his father and grandfather. Unbeknownst, to their elders, they piece together a story about their respective grandparents.
This is such a delightful story that is quick to read and very refreshing. Your heart is torn apart at times, but still you must read on. I love Kitty, who has remained in the village for all that time.
I highly recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction and romance.
This historical fiction is a dual-timline set in Suffolk, England in 1944 and 2011. Stories of Kitty during WWII and her granddaughter, Amy. The village pub and farmhouse settings are so quaint and picturesque. The characters never fully developed for me, but I still was pulled in by their stories. I especially enjoyed the ending, seeing all the secrets revealed.
What can I say but Wow and I loved this book. A dual time-line story that brings together the past and present from Suffolk in 1944 and again in 2011. This is a story of love, secrets and emotion. I do love the story of Kitty and Charlie and their time together in 1944 and also Amy and her budding friendship with a visiting American.
The descriptions of the location, the stories from the past and the lives of those living in the present all weave together a wonderful story which I just couldn't put down. Beautifully written, it draws you in from the start and takes you one the journey with all of the characters in its pages. That is what I love a bout a good book and this one did all that and more. Love it.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
This dual timeline story shares the story of Kitty and Charlie in 1944 and that of Kitty's granddaughter, Amy in 2011. Both time frames sit comfortably together and as the stories start to weave together and overlap so a beautiful love story starts to emerge.
Long buried secrets which Kitty has kept hidden gives the book its heart and soul and as her story evolves so we get to know more about the quiet Suffolk village where her father owns the local pub and the effect of having a US air force base so close to the village has on the villagers. Time and place come alive and I was equally at home in 1944 sharing the excitement as the American bombers fly backwards and forwards on their missions into Europe, as I was with Amy's life in 2011 running her tea-shop and catering for local events.
This emotional story really tugs away at the heart strings but it is so beautifully described that I couldn't help but be invested in all of the characters, especially Kitty and Charlie in 1944 whose fated love story reiterated just how much couples suffered during the war time years. The uncertainty of life was never taken for granted, and young lovers living for the moment is given wings to fly in this lovely story of lost love, and forever love.
Beautifully written, and imaginatively described, as all this talented author's historical novels are, I have no hesitation of making The Lost Memories my Featured Book of the Month for May.
This is the latest book by Lorna, another 'Then & Now' set in Norfolk during WWII about the USA airman based there and frequented the local village pub. The now set in the same village as they prepare for a Heritage weekend and the unveiling of a plaque in memory of the airman who were stationed there.
The then story is about Kitty during the war and a pilot who came into the pub. The Now Kitty is living in the farm house near the pub and her granddaughter who owns the tea room in the village.
I enjoyed this book and can recommend
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book prior to its publication.
I was hooked from the very beginning with Amy's description of her small medieval town in Suffolk, England. Add to that the WWII significance and romance and it came up a winner.
It's the story of Amy's budding romance with an American who came to this small town for a WWII Remembrance Day. It's also the story of her beloved gran who worked in her father's pub and served as a Lands Girl during the war. Somehow these dual timelines come together for a beautiful and very fulfilling ending.
The Lost Memories is told in two timelines ,1944 and 2011,a story of young love and big secrets .Set in a beautiful village in Suffolk with some lovely characters and touching story .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC
Books are meant to drag you into the story and keep hold of you, making you read that 'one extra page/chapter' and before you know it, you have read the whole book, you sigh and wish the story could continue. That is how I felt with this book. I enjoy a dual time line story, and it was easy to keep up with both Kitty and her grand daughters stories, you kept wondering when the stories would merge, and the author was able to keep us guessing.
It was a wonderful story about never giving up, things happen in unexpected places.
This was close to one of the best books I have ever read.
It starts kind of slowly, which is true of a lot of books, but as it starts unfolding, the stories start to form a beautiful web and you find yourself trying to figure out what happened.
Two beautiful love stories in one. Absolutely beautifully written historical fiction. Several sections where I actually cried.
Stories that are connected with WWII are one of my favorites for reading. That is why I enjoyed reading this story that has dual timelines entwined. Something is captivating in them. I like the writing style of the author, and the characters are well-built, so pretty believable and close to us. I look forward to reading authors' future books too.
The Lost Memories is a duel timeline romantic historical novel set in Suffolk in 1944 & 2011.
In 1944, American pilot Charlie is close to finishing his second tour flying bombing missions in Europe when he meets a local girl Kitty. Love blossoms between the two; will fate lead them down the path they foresee for themselves.
In 2011, Amy, Kitty's granddaughter, who runs a tea room dreams of expanding her business. She is catering a local Heritage Day when she meets an American photographer. As the pair hit it off, past secrets begin to unfurl.
This is a charming and emotive read. A lot of research has gone into the book. If historical romance is up your street, then I highly recommend it.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! The Lost Memories by Lorna Cook is a feel good romantic historical fiction novel. When Charlie, an American pilot, met Kitty, a teenage girl working in her father’s bar, one evening after a devastating flight he could never imagine where that would lead. The two fell head over heels in love but fate would intervene in their best laid plans. Several years later, Amy, running her own tea house and catering company with her sister, runs into a young man, Jack, visiting for Iowa. In England for a commemorative ceremony with is grandfather, Jack, discovers things about the quaint English town that he finds fascinating and the photos he’s able to capture help him create his own portfolio. A story about love, forgiveness and coming full circle full of charm though somewhat predictable. I loved it and would definitely recommend it to others who are looking for a lighthearted read which takes place during the Second World War.
Suffolk 1944: American pilot Charlie is just about finished his second tour, flying bombing missions in Europe. Life for a pilot is tentative but when he meets Kitty, his life and dreams change forever.
Suffolk 2011: Kitty's granddaughter Amy is a tearoom owner and has big ambitions for her business. With the help of her sister and occasional help of her mother, Amy's dream is to expand from tearoom and wedding cake making to a full catering business. When she meets American photographer Jack, she agrees to show him around her charming village in exchange for showing his photographic talents in her shop to their mutual benefit. A bond forms between them and when long held secrets emerge, both of their lives are impacted.
This is the sixth book I have read by Lorna Cook and it is a heartwarming, multi-generational love story and a delightful addition to her much loved books.
I love this story and thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read it prior to publication.
The Lost Memories is a riveting, emotional historical fiction book primarily set in England in 1944. This is a dual timeline novel and tells the story of young love, heartache, and resilience during wartime. The characters in both timelines swept me into their stories. This book made me a bit nostalgic, since my husband was in the USAF and we lived in that same area for a while, giving this book a personal touch for me. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.
Historical fiction always gets me right in the feels because its not fiction, is it? These things actually happened to people and it seems crazy to imagine that now. From plot twist, to heartache, to more plot twists; Lorna Cook had me HOOKED. I've gone and bought more of her novels because I'm so awed and moved by her work. Book me a trip to Suffolk, I need to see the location that inspired this amazing book.
The Lost Memories is a sweet romance with two entangled stories, one set during WWII and the other set in the present day. This is a quick read and mostly light and fun, and will appeal to anyone looking for historical fiction and a happily-ever-after ending. All of the characters could use more depth, and even the supporting characters could have had more interesting and developed roles. An early red flag about one character's alcohol use/dependency gets left behind without follow-up or resolution, as do several other threads. Finally, the title refers to a major thing in the story, but it's glossed over pretty quickly, even though it sets up a significant twist. It felt neglected and too easy--a deus ex machina that doesn't fully work.
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
