I received a copy of this eBook from NetGalley for a honest review.
This is a fun graphic novel about friendships and memories.
This was a really fun book to read. We saw these two friends go on some new adventures, and learn a lesson or two along the way.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own
Otis and Peanut have inspired the purchase of a just because cake. Fun stories that bring smiles to the reader's face
This book finds a nice balance between the standard, everyday adventure of most books for young children and the quiet aspects of grief. It hits more deeply, emotionally, than we typically see in this sort of book. Lovely.
Illustrated with simple but bright colors, this book was so much fun. Included are three separate stories, the cake, the dream and the collection. The cake was by far my favorite. Peanut brings Otis a surprise cake and Otis wants to know what they're celebrating.... cake, of course!
The dream was an almost wordless story and the collection included tips on saving your own memories.
I really like the Otis and Peanut books. They are a picture book style of graphic novel. They are usually a bit longer than picture books but they read quickly. This book has three stories. The first one has words about when you shouldn’t eat cake, the second story is wordless and is about water, fun and vegetables, and the third story is about keeping memories. The story is heartfelt and put a smile on the readers face. I do think sometimes peanut looks like he smoking a cigarette rather than brushing his teeth, but that’s an adult imagination. Other than that, this book is close to perfect. It’s a fun read, it uses color well, it has fantastic illustrations, and kids are going to love it.
Otis & Peanut Forever and Ever is an adorable children's book that's perfect for any reading level! The illustrations are fun, engrossing, and bright.
Otis and Peanut are unlikely friends. One is a long-haired guinea pig, and the other is a naked mole rat. But when Peanut baked a cake with Otis’s favorite frosting, there was no one else he wanted to share it with. But Otis was concerned about eating a cake without a reason. It should be a celebration, right? Or, as Peanut offered, was the existence of the cake enough reason to celebrate? It takes a clever solution to figure out the right answer to that question and let the friends eat the cake.
Peanut lost a friend, but when he went to his gardening supplies, he found some seeds that his friend had left him. He plants the seeds and reads a book on the porch, falling asleep thinking about his friend. He has a dream about her, about how they used to play under the sprinkler together. And while Peanut misses her, he gets out the hose and the sprinkler to water his newly planted seeds, he also gets suited up to play in the water by himself. But as the water runs, it makes a rainbow to remind Peanut that he’s not alone.
The next time Peanut goes to visit Otis, Otis is looking through his scrapbooks of memories. Peanut asks about them, and Otis explains that he likes to keep his memories in books, with photos or mementos to remember his best times. Peanut decides that’s a good idea too and collects some of his best memories together. But he doesn’t have many memories in his box. So he and Otis go out and make new memories that Peanut can add, and they have a great day together to remember forever and ever.
Forever and Ever, the second collection f stories about these sweet friends is full of kindness, warmth, and empathy. The friends share their joys and sadness, showing young readers that how to build the foundation of a strong friendship whole still being themselves. Author Naseem Hrab and illustrator Kelly Collier join together tender stories and charming illustrations combine in a collection of heart-warming stories reminiscent of Frog and Toad.
I love the Otis and Peanut stories. While I haven’t been a kid for many years now, I read these books and they remind of some of the books I loved as a child. I read these stories, I look at the illustrations, and they just bring me joy. There is a depth to this friendship that feels so genuine, I hope that all the young readers are able to find friends just like these two to share memories and cake with.
Egalleys for Otis & Peanut: Forever and Ever were provided by Owlkids Books through NetGalley, with many thanks.
Here are three more gentle tales that revolve around two friends - Otis, who's a long-haired guinea pig and Peanut, a naked mole rat. Here they discover different ways to cherish memories, and deal with loss. They also learn an important lesson about eating cake. (This last bit was very near and dear to my heart.)
Kelly Collier provides the adorable illustrations.

I hope this series continues forever.
This was a really fun book to read. We saw these two friends go on some new adventures, and learn a lesson or two along the way. Once this book comes to a close, it looks like the adventures aren’t over yet. Most kids will have a great time reading this book.
This super sweet children’s book includes 4 short stories where our favorite characters are trying to learn how to have fun. Though not exactly reachable for early readers, this would serve as a wonderful read aloud or exploration book.
Otis & Peanut Forever and Ever is a cute graphic novel for children focused on the friendship between a guinea pig and a naked mole rat. The illustrations were very fun and had a light-hearted vibe. The book was divided into 3 stories. For me, it was an odd shift that the second story did not have words, but I enjoyed the other 2.
This book also touches lightly on grief and memory-making. It would be a good book to open a discussion on grief for kiddos. Thanks to NetGalley, Naseem Hrab, and OwlKids books for the chance to read and review!
Otis & Peanut Forever and Ever is a beginning graphic novel that contains three short stories involving the two main characters. My favorite is the first one: "Cake". The stories are cute and short. I'm not a huge fan of the illustrations... I just prefer a different style.
I grabbed this book from Net Galley because it looked cute and like my daughter would enjoy it. I didn’t realize it was book 2 which normally isn’t an issue but we didn’t know Peanuts sisters had passed away or how and they didn’t really come out and say it. Initially I thought she was just living somewhere else because she was older. We also were lucky enough to win a giveaway for both books so we will be reading book one s soon as we receive it. We did enjoy reading this book. It had 3 different sections. The middle “book” had no words. At first I thought it was a long kids book but then with the one section it having words it read quickly. My favourite part was the illustration of Peanut brushing his teeth, I laughed out loud haha.
We would recommend this book.
Thanks to Netgalley and Owlkids Books for the chance to read it.
'Otis & Peanut Forever and Ever' by Naseem Hrab is perfect for a range of kids and there are three stories in one book. The illustrations are lively and engaging propelling the stories forward. The second story doesn't even have words and is still perfectly enjoyable. A really nice book that kids will want to read over and over.
Otis & Peanut Forever and Ever is the second outing for the best friends (a guinea pig and a naked mole rat) by Naseem Hrab. Due out 16th April 2024 from Owlkids Books, it's 80 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
This is a sweetly appealing, poignant, and sensitively written early chapter book (three stories) about friendship with themes of loss, remembering, holding on to memories, and making new ones. The stories are gentle and can be read without particular emphasis on the loss of Peanut's sister Pearl (it's never explicitly stated in this book). The friends remember Pearl by making (and eventually eating) Pearl's favorite cake recipe, learning to make the jam she always made, and when Peanut plants a garden with seeds she left for him.
They also go on some adventures and make new memories together. The art by Kelly Collier is simple and fun with lots of small details which invite readers to take a closer look. The illustrations are in color throughout the book.
Four and a half stars. Surprisingly deep, but never maudlin. Although one of the themes is the loss of Peanut's sibling, it's never directly stated in this book and could be glossed over if reading in a group. This would be an excellent choice for public or school library acquisition, for home library, or gift purposes.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes
A buddy book for the elementary set (in the vein of Piggie & Elephant), but also tying in dealing with loss in the long term. There are subtle references to Peanut's sister Pearl in each story, and adults will infer that Pearl has passed away, but it's more bittersweet than sad. In between entertaining friend interactions there are moments when Peanut is struck by memories of Pearl, a feeling with which those of us who have experience loss are familiar.
I received an electronic ARC from Owlkids Books through NetGalley.
Otis and Peanut are back and a more serious undertone comes through these three stories. Readers see Peanut grieving for his sister and Otis being with him in support. They have fun and enjoy life but each story includes a tangible reminder of Pearl and all she meant to Peanut. The illustrations capture the love between these friends and the love between the siblings.
Otis & Peanut Forever and Ever is an upcoming release kids are sure to love! The characters are quirky and loveable. I love how the book is set up as an easier transitional read for younger children. Kids will love the humor the characters bring and there are lots of opportunities for kids to make inferences throughout the book.
Highly recommend you add this one to your child's home library shelf or your classroom library if you are a teacher.
Thank you to Owlkids books for the ARC.
A series of three stories about friends Otis and Peanut. It is implied early in the stories that Peanut's sister, Pearl, has died and the two friends go through several events remembering her. They eat cake made from Pearl's favorite recipe. Peanut remembers fun times with Pearl. Otis and Peanut look through memory boxes and scrapbooks. This is a wonderfully sweet and gentle look at grief and would be a good book to discuss with a child who's faced a loss.
