Gareth Moore's contribution to this collaboration is equally impressive. As a renowned puzzle designer, Moore crafts puzzles that are both challenging and immensely satisfying to solve. The variety of puzzles, including crosswords, word searches, and cryptograms, are cleverly themed around the movies featured in the book, adding an extra layer of immersion and fun for the reader. These puzzles not only test your knowledge and deductive skills but also deepen your appreciation for the films through their ingenious design.

In conclusion, Ian Haydn Smith and Gareth Moore's "The Movie Puzzle Book" is an outstanding contribution to both film literature and the puzzle book genre. Its unique blend of challenging puzzles, fascinating film trivia, and beautiful design makes it a must-have for anyone who loves movies, puzzles, or both. This book is not just a way to pass the time; it's an invitation to explore the rich and varied world of cinema in a fun and interactive way.
As much as I liked this book; I love quizzes! I felt that some questions were a bit obvious as in the answer was embedded in the question. Fine for children but as adults not needed.
I thought I'd seen a similar book to this concerning literature, but can't find proof of it in my archive. Either way, this is a blend of non-fiction writing on the left-hand page, with the attendant puzzles on the recto. The information about the movies is probably what anybody should already know before they join an A-level media studies class, whether it's on the different genres of cinema, the Hollywood star system, or suchlike, while the puzzles are probably the greater draw. Here they're a mix of posers, ranging from the fresh-seeming and bespoke to the old tropes you get in any newspaper supplement. There's a film with a train in – so here's the train track puzzle! Some numbers can count as answers – here's those chains of sums we have to do mentally to get us to them. Luckily there's no film major enough for this called "Nine" or we'd have a sudoku. (PS, we do.)
But generally the tasks are more actually cinema-related, whether it be piecing together the names of superstar alter egos, or solving anagrams ("the wow hit ending" a most suitable one, once you've worked it out). You get some plain trivia questions when space and subject allow, as well, with all the answers in a spoilerific layout all together at the back. I thought this was a success in being up to date and yet having more than enough detail about the silent era, and the puzzles could certainly be started off by someone with only passing interest in the artform using a bit of logic and experience with the hobby. Once you've filled it in it might not demand a place on your shelves, and therefore be kind of redundant, but as a pastime for cineastes it's certainly no two-reeler.
This is such an amazing puzzle book, for all fans of cinema!
There is an amazing array of types of puzzles, and it covers such an incredible breadth of cinematic history. I routinely found myself remembering films that I love but had forgotten about to add to the watchlist, and loved the trivia and facts that were threaded throughout the book.
This was a really fun read, and I highly recommend.
My thanks to the author, NetGalley, and the publisher for the arc to review.
The Movie Puzzle Book is so much fun! This book is great for film lovers but there are quizzes that don't require vast film knowledge so is a fun and visual book that also contains great nuggets of film history. It covers all genres of film and this would make a great gift.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Ivy Press for an ARC and I left this review voluntarily.
This is a great book that not only enhances your knowledge of what you know about behind the scenes of movie making, but also tests your knowledge through puzzles and anagrams. There is a huge amount of trivia on creating movies, movies, celebrities, and movies themselves.
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group - Ivy Press and NetGalley for an eARC copy of The Movie Puzzle Book by Ian Haydn Smith; Gareth Moore.
My first major quip about this is that this arc is an e-book. As it is a puzzle book, it's a bit hard to enjoy without having the physical copy in your hands to actually do the puzzles. //That is just a me thing, however. Otherwise, the puzzles are fun, yet challenging and the tid bits of information of films and the photos are a nice added touch. I have certainly enjoyed it as much as possible, but cannot wait to do the puzzles by hand.
Wow some of these movie puzzles really made my brain hurt. There were a few that were way before my time or not something I’d watch, so I struggled with those. All in all this would make a great gift for a movie buff.
This is a fun, interactive history of famous classic films, From The Wizard of Oz to Casablanca and everything in between, this has you covered with trivia facts and fun details.
The Movie Puzzle Book would make a great gift for Christmas for those who like coffee-table books, or "bathroom reads" (or something you would read at the cabin!). It was a generally good overview of different aspects of movies, from a broad-stroke overview of varying genres and other important elements that goes into film making. The author provided a bunch of examples that best capture that theme, and then some fun little quizzes.
It didn't delve that deep (particularly in offering any insight to the rises and falls of that genre). I also might have benefited from exploring how the the at-home viewing experience (VHS/DVD/Online/Streaming services) or external world events affected the genre and movie-viewing experience.
I recommend this to (or for) someone have an established interest in this subject matter and want to flex their movie-trivia muscle. The ideal target audiences are probably Xennial/Gen-X and older, and younger people who are particularly enthusiastic about movies made pre-2000's.
Thank you NetGalley, Ivy Press, and the author for a DRC copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
(I am a bit late in writing this review due to a serious illness).
As always, thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy to read and review.
Expecting to see a book of trivia questions, a few crosswords. And maybe a few facts here and there, I was pleasantly surprised to see how in depth the puzzles and facts went. The puzzles ranged across genres and difficulty with trivia questions spread out. The facts and blurbs you’ll find throughout range from fun facts to in depth looks on the magic of movie making. I love that the puzzles are great for every movie fan and honestly, would be a great gift for every movie fan in your life. I could see this also as a great gift for a couple or family to enjoy together. This would make a great addition to a laid back get together or game night as there is a puzzle that will fit every person in your group.
A hugely enjoyable book that endeavours very successfully to answer numerous questions related to movies through the ages . Whilst enjoying the varied facts from a wide range of films, the reader is simultaneously offered the opportunity to engage in a hugely diverse set of quizzes and puzzles in a mixed and diverse format, setting a test of brain power and memory across films from every genre and decade. . So much information delivered in an entertaining fashion which successfully succeeded in engendering the urge to watch the movies all over again. Many thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
I love movies, good movies, bad movies, movies so bad they're good. I was excited when NetGalley let me read this, and it was a lot of fun. The sections are divided logically and there are puzzles about genre, director, language, etc. The puzzles themselves are unique and different, and often quite challenging. There was also a good deal of material about the history of film and specific people, and some wonderful photos.
This was a fun book to learn about movies, actors, directors, and other aspects of film. There are a variety of puzzles so they do not get boring, This would be a great gift for a moviephille in your life!
The Movie Puzzle Book would make a great gift for the movie lover in your life or really anyone who is interested in learning more about movies. It is very informative and fun. Well done!
More than just a puzzle book, this book is packed with mini essays on the craft, history and business of film making. The puzzles have a wonderful variety and there is bound to be something to delight every puzzler. With sections devoted to genre, film history, directors and the technical details of film-making, this is a book that is a delight to delve into for an fact-filled read as well as a challenging puzzle, Much recommended for the quiz buff and the film lover.
This book is totally addictive. If you like films and enjoy trivia, it’s for you. It’s absolutely packed with information about films, film making, genres, actors the history of the film industry and much, much more. I downloaded it yesterday and all my plans went out of the window. I was totally engrossed with the content, a notepad and pen to hand as I worked through numerous puzzles. There’s something to do on every page, with ranges of difficulty from reasonably easy to challenging. Anagrams, trivia, general knowledge and some fiendishly tricky clues along side the solutions which have been doctored to make it more fun. I really love this book and will be looking out the hard copy as a gift for a film buff friend who I know will revel in it. One of my best non fiction reads this year and so unexpected.
If you enjoy learning about movies and doing many different types of word puzzles to test your knowledge on the subject, this book may be for you.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of "The Movie Puzzle Book" by Ian Haydn smith and Gareth Moore. All opinion are my own.
I love this book. It provides great overview of different film genres and historical context. The features of a few movie stars was a great addition. I really learned a lot reading this and the puzzles included were a fun way to learn more. I definitely recommend this book for any movie lovers.
The Movie Puzzle Book is a leisure book that combines interesting knowledge about old movies from Ian Haydn Smith with movie-themed puzzles by the puzzle book author Gareth Moore.
I tortured my wedding guests with multiple movie-themed puzzles and games that I created from scratch. And let me tell you, if I had this puzzle book, I may have used some of the trivia questions and puzzles from it during my reception.
I also often invent new rules for puzzles and games that aren't challenging enough. It felt like Gareth Moore has a similar mind to mine, and I am here for it. When a game cuts up actors' names and throws them around the page in fragments like confetti -- and the author still decides to remove a segment of one of the names -- I know this is going to be fun.
My husband and I did a few of the puzzles together, and lots of laughs ensued. It's brought joy into my life, so I'm giving it all the stars. I recommend The Movie Puzzle Book for people who like old movies and puzzles. It's especially great if you are obsessed with both.
