Though I had never been a big fan of Keith Haring's work, he had a fast and fascinating life before dying so young of AIDS complications, and Gooch does a marvelous job of capturing Haring's incredible energy and swift rise to fame in the go-go 1980s. Haring's cultural touchstones -- pop music, TV, literature, more -- are in many ways parallel to mine. Haring's generosity came out when AIDS appeared; he supported groups fighting for awareness and he helped friends in need. While I did not review this book, I did interview Brad Gooch about it and about his view of "biography as novel." That Q&A, edited way down, appears in the July-August issue of Gay & Lesbian Review (link below, but there's a paywall).
This biography is absolutely fantastic. As someone who has been a fan of Keith Haring since childhood, I found this book to be both engaging and deeply informative. It filled in so many details about Keith, his art, and the vibrant world he inhabited. The narrative is rich and immersive, providing a comprehensive look at his life, influences, and the cultural landscape of his time. I couldn’t put it down, captivated by the way Gooch brings Haring’s story to life. Gooch is an exceptional biographer, capturing the essence of Haring with remarkable depth, insight, and sensitivity. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in art, culture, or the life of one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century.
I really struggled with this book, because it's just too much tedious detail with too many names and dates and places. I learned a lot about Haring and about the NYC art scene in the 1980s, but had to really work hard for it and sift through way more name-dropping and blow-by-blow interactions with everyone who ever spoke to the man than I needed. It could have used a lot of editing. It could also have used so many more photographs; I had to go and find an actual art book for examples of Haring's work at each stage of his life, which was far more interesting and illustrative of his state of mind than this work was.
This has to be the most authoritative biography of Keith Haring to date. What an incredible feat. Brad Gooch is brilliant and his eloquence comes through in crafting this narrative of one of America's premier modern artists who had his life snuffed out much too soon. I'm an avid fan of Keith Haring's art, but I didn't know much about him as a person beyond some basic facts. I'm glad I picked this up.
The reader is treated to a comprehensive look at his life, but the biography is written in a way that encourages the reader to engage with Keith Haring as if we know him personally. Reading Radiant put me right on the streets of New York, watching Keith paint his works in his sleeveless shirts and tight blue jeans. Evocative is a word that comes to mind, but I don't think it fully encapsulates just how emotive this book is. I purchased a hardcover copy of this book because I just need to have it on my shelf. Thank you, Mr. Gooch, for crafting a novel worth keeping in my collection forever.
Thank you to the author and the publisher, Harper, for this ARC in exchange for my review.
I admire the works of the legendary Keith Haring, and so, when I saw the book Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring by award-winning novelist and biographer Brad Gooch, I had to read it.
This book not only takes you into the counter-culture of the 1980s art scene, it leads you into the captivating and colorful day-to-day life of Keith Haring, bringing you everything from the details of his childhood to his death aged 78 from AIDS in 1990 and beyond to his legacy.
