Harry and Zara are desperate to find their missing daughter Sophie. They talk to every neighbor, all except one who refuses to answer the door. Could the answer be behind door number 210?
Told from two perspectives by Harry and Zara, I was shocked, but not really surprised by how far these parents would go to find Sophie. When they finally get answers, well, call me shocked! I did not see that coming. Quite a bit happens while Sophie still doesn’t come home. With the dual narratives and short chapters, I flew through this book.
My first read by this author, and now my want to read list has grown to include his backlist.
Finding Sophie is a dramatic, powerful story of two parents who morph into different, anguished personalities after their teen daughter disappears. It is told from alternating POVs which adds to the captivating intensity.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballentine for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I really liked the alternating perspectives and the family DRAMA this book unfolded! Such a touching story with just enough mystery to keep me on my toes. Highly recommend!
Zara and Henry, parents of missing daughter Sophie, take matters into their own hands after the police stop their investigation. Convinced that their neighbor holds important information, the desperate parents go to extreme lengths to find the truth. The story is filled with mystery and suspense, with the parents' narrative leaving doubt as to whether they are telling the whole truth about their strained relationship with Sophie. As the tension builds, revelations in the courtroom shed light on the truth behind Sophie's disappearance. The book has a confusing timeline and short chapters, but the unexpected twists and shocking conclusion make it an engaging thriller.
The story follows Zara and Henry, parents of missing 17-year-old Sophie, as they uncover clues and grow frustrated with the police's lack of progress. Their focus narrows in on a specific house, #210, where they believe the answer to Sophie's whereabouts lies. The narrative alternates between Zara and Harry's perspectives, adding to the intrigue but potentially causing confusion due to the short chapters. Despite these flaws, the book offers surprising twists and a genuinely shocking revelation about what happened to Sophie. Overall, it is a thrilling and realistic thriller that keeps readers engaged.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
I was very excited when I received the ARC of this book because of the premise and this author’s work.
This book took me on every kind of emotional roller coaster you can imagine. Sadness, frustration, fear, annoyance, sympathy, etc. Some of these feelings were obviously due to the author’s words, but other times I was feeling these toward the characters themselves and the pace …. Incredibly slow pace of this book.
This is the story of two parents, Harry and Zara, going through the unthinkable experience of their only daughter, Sophie, being missing. As I can only imagine when the police are coming up with no leads they both decide they are going to do whatever they need to do to find answers, sometimes together and sometimes separately.
I could go on forever on my thoughts and feelings of this book. However I will summarize it all up. Starting the book I was immediately intrigued, then even though things and twists were unraveling I was getting frustrated at how slowly, incredibly slowly the book was moving along. The alternating chapters between the two parents were wild as well as a trial simultaneously going on was a lot. It wasn’t until the last 25% of the book I was hooked on every wild, twisted, word finally revealing the answers to all the questions we needed.
Overall this book was written impeccably as far as story development, the raw emotions of the characters, the lengths a parent will go to find their missing child even if that means discovering secrets about those around you, yourself, and your child that would break most people. By the time I finished I was emotionally exhausted. It took me some time to digest everything that happened in this story. Even during this longggg review I still find myself fumbling over it all. To the readers I will say definitely give this book a read, don’t give up when you feel it’s not going anywhere, and be prepared for a hard, heart wrenching story. This is not an easy story to put on paper and this author did it in one of the most human, realest, raw ways possible. It takes you on these parents exact journey as if you are right beside them and truth be told that is not a fast easy quick resolution. But it’s real, sad, frustrating, multi layered, and exhausting. You will find yourself liking one parent one second, hating them the next … repeat repeat repeat. In the end it’s up for you to decide who is the villian, hero, or simply someone in between.
A huge thank you to the Author, Netgalley, Random House Publishing Group- Ballantine Bantan for this ARC!!
Someone is guilty.
Harry and Zara have one daughter, Sophie, who their life has revolved around. One day Sophie vanishes without a trace and the police have no leads. Harry and Zara take it upon themselves to try to find out what happened.
There’s one house where the occupant refuses to talk to them, and they’re convinced he has something to do with her disappearance. Harry and Zara become borderline obsessed with trying to get him to talk.
How far will they go to figure out what really happened to Sophie?
This is one of those books that I needed to marinate on for a while before writing the review. There were some things that I enjoyed, and a few things I really didn’t like, and some things that I had a love/hate relationship with. For example, I was a little annoyed that some of the chapters were only a page or two long, this is too short in my opinion, but I enjoyed how the shortness helped propel the pace of the story, and this one needed it. Which brings me to the biggest gripe I had, the pacing, it was so slow! Snail pace. The only thing keeping me engaged was the short chapters and needing to know how this one worked out. Now for what I loved. The ending! It was just so good and so unexpected. It really took me by surprised and I loved it. The last 25% or so of the book was rather engaging and I perked up and really found myself needing to finish.
This book was a journey of emotions. As a parent I struggled with the topics covered so make sure that they are not triggering one for you, it was borderline for me and one that I am working on getting okay with.
Thank you so much to Random House Publishing Group Ballantine, Bantam and Netgalley @netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars rounded to 4.
Loved this book! It was nice to see parents ride so hard to find answers about their daughter. The chapters from court make it way more interesting. It was an overall very easy read and I recommend it
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Wow. The ending was not what I had foreseen. This is a very intense story with flawed yet relatable characters.
What a clever plot for a legal thriller. My mind kept bouncing back in forth since each chapter was told in the voice of Zara or Harry.. I was never quite sure how this was going to end and my mind was blown after I finished the last page. I felt emotional about the parents grief of not knowing where their daughter was or if she was alive . The author did a great job of slowly giving us clues about what happened to Sophie yet not quite giving us too much so the book kept my interest from the beginning to the end. Overall a riveting thriller not to be missed.
Full of twists and turns. A husband and wife going to all ends to find what happened to their missing daughter. Captivating, heart-breaking, and full of emotion. This story alternates between the husbands perspective and the wife’s, which adds to the suspense of what happened to their daughter.
As a parent of a teenage daughter, I felt this was a powerful book. When 17 year old Sophie goes missing, her shattered parents will stop at nothing to find out what happened to her. As school teachers her parents are average, law abiding people who suddenly find themselves in a dangerous world of murder and drugs when the police cannot help them find their daughter. The characters are richly drawn and as a mother I wept and raged with them throughout the story right up to the harrowing ending which left me shocked. Children will be your biggest joy and break your heart at that the same time.
FINDING SOPHIE by Imran Mahmood had me so close to the edge of my seat, I was close to hitting the floor!
Harry and Zara King are on a desperate search to find their missing teenage daughter, Sophie. It seems that the police did only a cursory search when the Kings reported Sophie missing. Harry and Zara have gone door-to-door in search of their daughter however the house just down the street from them never responds to knocks on the door or notes left by the parents. Harry and Zara become convinced that John Herman knows something about their missing daughter. Harry becomes obsessed with finding out what is really happening at 210 and becomes increasingly desperate in his attempts to enter the home.
Told in differing points of view and with a murder trial interspersed throughout the book we follow along to a shocking conclusion, where we see how people who love and depend on each other cope with the fall out of their actions.
This is my first Imran Mahmood book but I have a feeling it will not be my last. The writing style was very easy and concise, which I always appreciate. My heart was pounding, and my adrenaline was pumping as the King family attempted to protect one another. This is definitely an author I will be watching.
Thank you to Random House and Netgalley for this ARC opportunity. All opinions are my own and given voluntarily..
“Finding Sophie” is by Imran Mahmood. This subject matter - trying to find a missing daughter - really cut close for me as I went though the tragedy of losing my only child (young adult) this year. The overwhelming grief of the parents is heartbreaking to read … along with their different determinations to find out just where their daughter is. This book has many chapters (short) told in alternating POVs of the parents - Zara and Harry. I found the court room chapters - along with some of the police procedures - to read very believable, helped by Mr. Mahmood’s knowledge of those areas due to his experience.
Heartbreaking story with quite a few twists. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
Harry & Zara are desperate to find their teenage daughter, Sophie. The frustration and anger over not knowing what has happened to her, coupled with anguish over perceived failings as parents lead them to struggle with how to navigate the tradegy together - and separately.
The book is told from alternating POV of Zara and Harry. A trial is underway at the start of the book, but who's on trial we aren't told. The story goes through the evolution of what Sophie's parents are driven to do to save her or mete out justice for her. Some parts are a bit slow, but still held my attention. I wasn't expecting the ending, either! Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my opinion.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Told in the alternating perspectives of Harry and Zara, and in a dual timeline between the weeks after Sophie’s disappearance and a year later in the middle of a murder trial, Imran Mahmood’s taut yet profoundly moving novel explores how differently grief can be experienced even when shared by parents—and how hope triumphs when it springs from the kind of love that knows no bounds.
This book is surprisingly moving as well as emotional. I read it furiously to see how it ended.
4 stars
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Sophie disappeared many years ago and her parents want answers. They have done everything you can think of to find her. This book was an emotional read.
Finding Sophie by Imran Mahmoud is a dazzling written story with familiar trials and tribulations of a family with a young daughter trying to spread her wings.
became engrossed in this multifaceted storyline right at the start. There were only a few parts that reading before bed put me to sleep. The last several chapters kept from my Sunday afternoon nap though!
The ending is not one that I ever saw coming and was quite the shock. It was brilliant and I would love to read a sequel to Finding Sophie.

Loved this one and raced to get through it! It opens with a trial: husband and wife, Harry and Zara are being accused of murdering a neighbor they hardly knew as they believe he killed their missing teen, Sophie. But of course there are so many factors at work here! Told in alternating chapters from each of their perspectives, the book details how there were so many secrets that Sophie kept from them--what teen doesn't have secrets--and what secrets they kept from each other. It's a great story about relationships, lies, and the lengths to which we will go to protect our own children--even as we know so little about their lives!
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC!
Wow, what an introduction to author Imran Mahmood. This was my first work by him and it has made me a lifelong fan of want of his other books are even half as good.
I loved how the chapters were written (short but full of detail and action) and I liked the perspective shifts that helped build the story.
This was a really good read.
