I am absolutely obsessed with Hyesu Lee's illustration style and comics. I do think that Instagram is a better platform for this art format without interspersed longer form writing. It felt more like a collection of comics than a proper book.
I haven't heard Hyesu Lee's name before, but I picked this up because the gently humorous artstyle caught my eye. And true to the cover, Self Love Club is a collection of cute, colorful and often funny illustrations, mostly uplifting in nature and full of gentle humor and acceptance of one's own fallibility -- and they are lovely to look at, and each of those pictures would be a good postard with a gentle affirmation that you could send a friend or pin to your wall. What I struggle with is calling it a book as such: they are not really coherently strung together, or arranged in a way that has particular significance. So calling it an artbook would have probably been fairer.
I did love some of the illustrations though, and would totally send a couple of them to friends to cheer them up.
Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for an ARC.
I have been a fan of Hyesu Lee’s work for a while. Her playful images are incredibly eye-catching and joyful.
Self-Love Club is a book of cartoons, illustrations, memoir, and inspirational messages. Lee has clearly had issues with self-doubt, and her resolve to love herself exactly as she is, is incredibly inspiring. As women, we’re given multiple reasons daily to dissect aspects of our appearance or personality. With this book, Lee encourages the reader to embrace their individual beauty, and seek personal acceptance.
The autobiographical sections are moving, funny, and incredibly relatable. Lee opens up about issues such as her accent, birthmarks, and lack of motivation. These parts add authenticity to the motivational messages peppered throughout the book.
I loved the artwork, the message, and the humor. A really fantastic book for anyone experiencing self-doubt, or someone who needs a reminder of their awesomeness.
I appreciate what this book is trying to do but I had a hard time with the art style and it seemed to just be constantly repeating itself throughout. Self care is very important but maybe we don't need comics to remind us of that.
What a great book told with illustrations! It was expressive and detailed. I could relate to the content 100 percent. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. It was a refreshing way to read about self-love. Five stars.
. This comic, graphic novel had everything that you would need to boost your confidence. To the comic strips or just sayings that make your day better, you will enjoy this pick me up. The only thing that I really didn't enjoy was the illustrations. The boobs out and nakedness are not what I expected or liked.
I really loved the Self- Love Club. I think the author could sell certain pages as individual prints! I loved the positive affirmations but also the thought that it's ok to not "be productive" and to take care of yourself. I did think the personal story was a bit disjointed at times, I'd like more of a fluid storyline throughout.
This book felt like a hug to my soul. It was funny and relatable and not cheesy at all (which can sometimes happen with self-love or self-help books promoting positivity). It was genuine and heartwarming, and I loved it.
Self-Love Club is an adorable illustrated guide to loving yourself and finding ways to be more comfortable in your own skin! The artist Hyesu Lee takes time to illustrate the good, the bad, and the ugly, but in ways that are insightful and lighthearted reminders that we're all human and we all need encouragement sometimes.
I really loved the color palette of this book and the mix of comics and full page art pieces! I also really enjoyed how a lot of the comics touched on femininity/womanhood/gender expression, and made it clear that whatever and however you feel like presenting is okay. It was all very uplifting and enjoyable! I feel like it would be the perfect book to gift a friend as a little reminder for self-care, or a treat for yourself.
Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for providing me a copy of this book for an honest review.
