Wow! I really thought it was the creepy teenage friend from next door, so I did not see who the bad guy was! Man, was he fucked up! I love a happy ending so I am glad that the Winthrops got their daughter back and got their love back on track! This is my 3rd book by Hannah Morrisey and they just keep getting better and better! I can't wait for the next in this series!
Now that I've taken a day to let my heartrate regulate, I can finally review this book! You think I'm kidding? Just ask my smart watch. This one was a LITERAL fast-paced, heart-racing, pulse-quickening thriller.
When it comes to Hannah Morrissey, the difference really is in the details. The way she describes everything from the town (Black Harbor aka the most crime ridden city on the earth that's fictitiously located in Wisconsin), the atmosphere (everything here is HALLOWEEEN vibes), the dead bodies (don't read while eating), etc. etc. I really and truly couldn't put it down.
I was quite invested right off the bat, but roughly around the halfway point, things really kicked into gear and didn't stop escalating until the very end. 80%-100% had me in a chokehold!
I really don't think I'd change anything about this book and while I'd love to list off my favorite parts (the plot twists, the part where I audibly GASPED, the times she WENT THERE), I can't because you need to be just as shocked as I was when reading it!
This book takes place during Halloween, comes out on Halloween, and you should definitely pre-order it so you can read it on Halloween!
While this is part of a series (Black Harbor Series), it can 100% be read and loved on its own.
This is my favorite by Hannah so far and I cannot wait to read everything she writes next!
Huge thank you to Macmillan Audio for sending me an ALC!
Always enjoy a good twisty thriller and this was a good one. This is the third in the Black Harbor mysteries and even though I didn't read the first two, I was drawn into the characters and the story. Axel and Rowan Winthorp are involved with different aspects of law enforcement and their worst nightmare came true when their daughter, Chloe, goes missing. Rowan is the medical examiner and Axel is an investigator with the Black Harbor Police Department. They have to use all of their skills to solve the murders and missing person cases. You have to listen or read the book to learn how they work the angles to figure out the mystery.
The audiobook was narrated by Andrew Eiden, Caitlin Kelly, Xe Sands, and Gary Tiedemann. I enjoyed all but one of the narrators. It took until after halfway through before I could engage with all the narrators. The voices fit the characters as I imagined them. Each chapter was a different character and I could easily tell who it was about by their voice and chapter title. The pace of the narration made it easy to listen to and get captivated by the story. If you are looking for a good story with an engaging narration, I recommend this book.
Thank you Macmillan Audio and Net Galley for a complimentary audiobook. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is the third installment of the series, but definitely can be read as a standalone. To me the book seem to start of slow, and drone on a bit, giving back story on everything seems a little unnecessary to me. I’m not the biggest fan of the narrators.
Thank you so much to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, Minotaur Books, and Hannah Morrissey for providing this twisty thriller for my honest review. This was my first Hannah Morrissey book and my first in her Black Harbor Mystery series. This book can absolutely be read or listened to as a stand alone, but I enjoyed it so much I have to go back and start in this world from the beginning. I can’t wait! I loved the characters, the twists, the mystery, and the atmosphere. I was a bit lost at first listening to the audio. The narrator in the beginning seemed to talk softly or mumble and I had a hard time following along, but that improved and I was quickly invested. If you love a spooky and twisty thriller then I highly recommend this one! Thank you again for allowing me to review this book.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for an advanced audio copy in return for an honest review.
My Rating: 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is book #3 in the Black Harbor series but is the first one I read. It can be a stand-alone book and may have more backstory if read in order. A good fall-time read with the haunted house and pumpkin lady, but with the murder mystery, it can be read any time.
The novel was longer than necessary and the mom’s narration volume increase followed by her dragging whisper was not ideal.
If you like this series, you may like book #3 as well. I would recommend increasing the playback speed if murder mysteries are your genre.
Chloe Winthorp's father is a Detective, and her mother is a Medical Examiner. Those professions would keep them busy enough in a normal town, but in a town with a seedy side as vast as Black Harbor's, they're swamped. When one of Chloe's classmates is murdered and another goes missing, Chloe's parents have to wonder if their daughter is in danger..... or if she is the danger.
I loved this one; it's dark and gritty and set in a believably dodgy town. One of my favorite things about this book was that several of the main characters were teenagers, and their stories were told well and included all of the teenage stuff but did not venture into catty teenage girl stuff. The issues the teenagers were serious and realistic, and I appreciated that approach because I often feel like teenagers are portrayed as being overwhelmed by tiny things and don't really understand how much more kids today have to deal with. Anyways, I really enjoyed this book. It was a good quick read, gritty but not gory, with a number of surprises. Highly recommended for mystery fans!
When I’m Dead was an engaging read with intriguing characters and a great plot. Narration was fantastic.
DNF @30%
Very little has happened; the book is too slow moving to keep my interest. I am also not buying that a lead detective on the case is the father of a missing girl presumably connected to the death of her friend. The author spends a paragraph or so trying to explain/rationalize why this is but I'm still not buying it and can't seem to "go with" the absurdity. One of the narrators is also terrible (the older woman). Mostly I'm too bored to keep reading. Sorry!
Thanks netgalley for my ARC
4 Stars! This was a great thriller/mystery that had me hooked pretty quickly. There were a few parts that seemed a bit more slow-paced, but overall an engaging story. There are twists and turns as detectives search for a killer targeting teen girls that may have another girl already in his clutches. The narrators were fantastic and having multiple really helped as the story had multiple POVs. While this book is technically the 3rd in a series, it works great as a stand alone. This the first I have read and I will definitely be checking out the others!

This is the third book in the Black Harbor series.
When I finished reading "Hello, Transcriber" first in this series my comment was it had me at ‘Hello”! I also read the Second Book in this series "The Widowmaker" ] liked it even more!!!! so I have been looking forward to this story.
Black Harbor Book #3 starts off with introducing us to Rowan and Axel Winthrop. Rowan Winthrop is the medical examiner, and her husband Axel, is a homicide detective with the Black Harbor Police Department
Rowan and Axel are attending Monroe Academic’s musical production of “Beetlejuice’ where daughter Chloe has the lead. ~link to the trailer of the fun musical -

They are called away to investigate the murder of young Madison Caldwell, who happens to be friends with Chloe. After when they arrive home they discover that Chloe is missing.
Rowan can hear the last thing her daughter said to her-
“You’ll love me more when I’m dead.
As Rowan and Axel begin their own investigation into the disappearance of their daughter they find a lot of secrets about the ‘so called’ friends and of both girls.
I am big fan of Psychological thrillers~ I have read enough that I have some expectations~
There will be many secrets!
Expect twists and turns!
Be suspicious of everyone!
The most obvious person didn’t do it!
Yep However I totally missed being suspicious of everyone – as I was totally missed it!
This was great – even though I wasn’t a fan of the gruesome things or the nasty language- But-
I am ready for Black Harbor #4!!
This audio is awesome as the story is told in the POV of several characters and the audio narrators were awesome in performing the characters.
Want to thank NetGalley and Macmillan Audio ~ Minotaur Books for this audiobook.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for October 31, 2023 Yes! It is a perfect Halloween read with Libby the teenage taxidermist, a haunted house, and gruesome deaths.
I would say 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed Morissey's writing. She has a very evocative style, but I thought that some of the story was washed out by the narration of the audio book. The story was well planned and kept me on my toes!
The third installment in the Black Harbor series by Hannah Morrissey; this one was by far my favorite. And fortunately, if you haven't read the other 2 novels in this series, you don't really need to in order to understand what's going on. The setting is always Black Harbor but the crimes remain different and the cast of characters rotate. The only one that has been consistent is Detective Nick Cole.
Medical examiner, Rowan Winthorp gets called to investigate the murder scene of her daughter's best friend. Then her daughter vanishes and Rowan and her cop husband, Axel, are sure the crimes are linked. But did Chloe kill her mean girl bestie or was she kidnapped? When a 2nd high school girl ends up dead, there is more pressure than ever to solve these murders and find Chloe.
*Special thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this audio e-arc.*
When I'm dead seemed like a good choice for my October BOTM and I was excited when I got the approval for the audiobook as well. While it was the third book in the series, it went fine as a standalone for me. The story was okay... I found myself struggling to connect with any of the characters and didn't feel excited to finish it. 3/5
Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this advance copy in exchange for my review.
I really enjoyed this book a lot.
I didn't realize going into it that it was part of a series but it was totally fine to read as a stand alone.
I will 100% be going back and reading the first two books of the series now.
Could there have been mild spoilers? Maybe, but certainly not anything blatant that I will remember.
The story and characters were developed wonderfully. As with any great thriller, every character was suspicious and the perfect amount of red herrings were tossed in.
I really liked the ending and did not guess who was responsible for the murders at all.
I'm excited to read more by Hannah in the future.
🎧📖 note: The full cast narrating was fantastic! Andrew Eiden; Caitlin Kelly; Gary Tiedemann; Xe Sands did a wonderful job. (I would listen to Xe narrate an instruction manual at this point.)
4.5 ⭐
Very well written, a little disturbing at times but it’s a thriller so not unexpected. This book made me gasp out loud! I figured out who the killer was about halfway through but definitely not the twisty twist!
I didn’t realize this was book 3 in the series but it didn’t make a difference. Can be read as a standalone.
It’s sad for a child to think that her parent would care more about her if she were to be dead. Because her parents put their work over her and run after dead bodies instead of staying at their daughter’s play, Chloe felt she had to say those words to her mom. Her parents were working to “provide” her everything she needed, but they forgot about providing the support she was looking for.
Black Harbor was rattling with murders of young girls and missing Chloe. There must some someone after their girls. Was it an insider or an outsider? Was it a teacher? Was this teacher abusing their girls? Were the girls after each other? Who was bullying who? Chloe’s father, the detective, and mother, the medical examiner, now needed to answer these questions to find their daughter.
Clues were beautifully sprinkled all over the story, but you need to wait till the end of the book to learn who the culprit was. It was a sad story that led to the tragedy unfolding now. Parents , whatever you do, do not mess up with your children’s future by favoring work over them, or one child over another.
Captivating readers from the very first page, the book immerses you in a world shrouded in mystery and intrigue. The enigma surrounding the disappearance of the girls is brilliantly constructed, weaving a complex narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author's meticulous attention to detail and clever storytelling make for a truly engaging read.
One of the standout aspects of the book is the characters. Each one is meticulously developed, with layers that are peeled back slowly, revealing hidden depths and motivations. Their complexity adds richness to the story, making you empathize with their struggles and victories. The way the author intertwines their lives amidst the mystery adds a profound human element to the plot.
The writing style is simply superb. Descriptive prose brings the setting to life, making you feel as though you are right there, experiencing the events alongside the characters. The author's ability to create an atmospheric ambiance enhances the overall sense of suspense and drama. The pacing is expertly managed, allowing the tension to build gradually, culminating in a riveting climax that leaves you breathless.
As the story unfolds, nothing is as it seems. Twists and turns abound, challenging your assumptions and keeping you guessing until the very end. The plot intricately explores themes of deception, trust, and the darkness that can reside within seemingly ordinary lives. The cleverly crafted plot twists are both surprising and satisfying, demonstrating the author's mastery of the genre.
Having delved into this gripping tale, I find myself eagerly anticipating more from this series. The author's ability to craft such a compelling narrative speaks volumes about their talent and dedication. If you're a fan of mystery novels that are as intellectually stimulating as they are emotionally resonant, this book is an absolute gem. Prepare to be enthralled, surprised, and utterly captivated.
Happy Monday, friends 🖤

I loved Morrissey’s first two books in the Black Harbor series, HELLO, TRANSCRIBER and THE WIDOWMAKER and I whipped through WHEN I’M DEAD at full throttle. I loved every second I spent back in Black Harbor!
A couple, Rowan and Axel Winthorp, are called away from their daughter Chloe’s star performance in the school play to investigate a murder. It’s Chloe’s closest friend, Madison, and when Chloe doesn’t come home that night from the school play, they’ll be torn apart by the breadcrumb trail of clues. Each one questioning whether Chloe is a victim or a suspect. More murders, more suspects and time is running out …
Alternating chapters are told by three different characters, each with a unique viewpoint into the lives of the victims and the suspects. Each offering a bit more information - who has a motive and who has something to hide – a great way to tell this suspenseful story, leaving the reader with a true mystery to unravel.
🎧I listened when I couldn’t read and it is a stunning multicast narration that was a freaking delight to listen to! Bravo to the narrators!
Highly recommending this one and would like to point out, this can be read as a standalone but I’d encourage reading all of Hannah’s books because if you don’t, well, you’re just missing out.
💭And today’s QOTD straight from Hannah’s book: Would you rather have hair for teeth or teeth for hair?
Stay bookish, my friends 🖤
"You'll love me more when I'm dead." - Chloe Winthorp
Another great spooky season read.
Rowan Winthorp is a medical examiner & Axel Winthorp is a Detective.
While at their daughter Chloe's school play they get called to a murder scene..
Telling Chloe to get a ride home with the neighbor they leave. like always.
They arrive to find their daughters best friend horrifically murdered.. Realizing later Chloe is missing..
Rowan is replaying the last thing Chloe said to her, "You will love me more when I'm dead."
Who is murdering girls in Black Harbor, and why?
