Thanks to NetGalley for the arc audiobook of this!
I really hate to give a low review, and honestly dnf this. I tried and tried but it did not catch my attention. I’m not sure what exactly it was, the description sounds great and I was excited for it, but after multiple attempts to listen through, I gave up. Just wasn’t for me unfortunately.
Medical examiner Rowan Winthorp and her detective husband, Axel are called to the scene of a young murdered girl. The victim turns out to be a friend and classmate of their daughter, Chloe. As they return home they are hit with the devastating discovery that Chloe is missing. The clues lead the couple down paths that question their past, the strength of their marriage and how well they know their daughter. Black Harbor is an incredible backdrop for this gritty, dark psychological thriller.
Once again Hannah Morrissey delivers a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Morrissey has an incredible talent of creating environments that are rich in detail and characters that are multi-faceted and so interesting. In this case she captured the strain and stress that Rowan and Axel were experiencing. Their raw emotions were on full display and it was so gut wrenching. As a parent I could relate to their pain. After each clue and secret was revealed, the tension increased. I could not stop listening to this story, I was hooked!!
The audiobook was fantastic!! Multiple narrators brought the story to life!!
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review .

Wow, this was definitely a hard book. It's definitely interesting but makes you wonder about everyone around you. It is crazy how little things can set things in motion. I couldn't stop listening to this book. It's a thriller and a good one. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for an interesting mystery/thriller. All I can say is wow.
“You’ll love me more when I’m dead.”
“The dead can wait. They’re not going anywhere.”
Medical examiner Rowan Winthorp investigates the murder of her teenage daughter’s best friend one chilly October night. But mere hours later, after performing in her school play, her daughter Chloe goes missing as well.
So I read The Widowmaker, which is Black Harbor #2, and I didn’t even realize that when I ordered When I’m Dead, which is Black Harbor #3. But this book would read just fine as a stand alone as well. I did find it slightly far fetched that any police precinct would allow their own law enforcement officer to be the lead on their own child’s case. But it was interesting to listen in as a father learns things about his daughter that are difficult to hear and to see how he planned to keep his own feelings away from the facts.
The audiobook was great with multiple narrators all adding that element of creepiness and mystery. This was such an easy book to get lost in. I love when audiobooks have multiple narrators if there are a lot of characters as it really helps to keep them straight as the story progresses.
Thank you to @netgalley, @macmillan.audio, and the author for the ALC.
This was such a dark, twisty murder mystery that kept me guessing until the very end. Filled with unreliable characters, I was constantly questioning everyone and the very descriptive creepy atmospheric setting gave me all of the spooky feels. This was my first read by Morrissey and it will definitely not be my last.
FYI - this book is the third installment in a series but it can also be read as a stand-alone, which is what I did.
Thank you, NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books, and Hannah Morrissey for a #gifted ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this book, it was a solid thriller for me. I had no idea it was part of a series, and I didn't feel like I needed to read the books prior to this in order to have a complete picture. I listened to this on audio and it kept me entertained!
A significant part of my reading this year has been dedicated to exploring the works of new authors I hadn't previously encountered. Venturing into uncharted literary territory has yielded mixed results. While some authors failed to strike a chord with me, others have swiftly risen to the status of must-reads. Hannah Morrissey firmly belongs to the latter group. Her debut novel, Hello, Transcriber, captivated me with its evocative ambiance and gripping narrative, prompting me to eagerly consume her subsequent work. Now, Morrissey revisits the fictional town of Black Harbor for a third time with her latest release, "When I'm Dead." True to her distinctive style, it's another page-turner that skillfully fuses atmospheric suspense, intriguing characters, and a compelling mystery.
Black Harbor, Wisconsin, is no stranger to crime and tragedy. It holds the dubious distinction of being the most crime-ridden town in the state. In the midst of this tumultuous backdrop, husband and wife Rowan and Axel navigate their roles as a medical examiner and a detective. Their daily routines often involve responding to gruesome crime scenes. Thus, when they receive an urgent call to abandon their daughter's high school play and investigate a murder, it doesn't come as a surprise. When they arrive on the scene, however, they are taken aback to discover the murder victim is one of their daughter's best friends. The shadow of tragedy has descended upon their own lives, and it's poised to become even more personal.
In the harrowing hours following their return home from the murder investigation, Rowan and Axel make a disconcerting discovery – their daughter, Chloe, failed to return from the school play. As the search for Chloe unfolds alongside the murder inquiry, their relationship becomes increasingly tainted with guilt and recrimination. A grim tapestry of clues gradually unravels, compelling these parents to question how well they truly knew their daughter. Did their unwavering dedication to their careers eclipse their family life? Could they have prevented Chloe's disappearance? Most disconcerting of all, could Chloe be somehow connected to her friend's death?
In When I'm Dead, Hannah Morrissey ventures into her darkest and most captivating mystery to date. As in her previous works, she skillfully constructs a grim and unsettling atmosphere within her fictional town, infusing each page with a palpable sense of foreboding. Morrissey crafts a multi-faceted mystery that delves deep into the primal fears of parenthood. The death of a child is one form of anguish; the chilling notion that one's child may be a murderer introduces an entirely distinct dimension of dread. The characters in this narrative are intricately portrayed, with the simmering tensions among teenage girls providing a delectable layer of drama and authenticity. I had the privilege of experiencing this story through its audiobook format, graciously provided by Macmillan Audio. The full cast narration featuring Andrew Eiden, Caitlin Kelly, Gary Tiedemann, and Xe Sands breathes life into the characters and adeptly captures the story's brisk pace and suspenseful essence.
Each of the three books in Morrissey's Black Harbor series can be enjoyed as standalone works, yet they seamlessly interconnect, offering readers an immersive experience regardless of their prior familiarity with the series. Still, I wholeheartedly recommend delving into each of these remarkable tales. Hannah Morrissey's writing has become one of my favorite discoveries this year, and When I'm Dead solidifies her status as one of my must-read authors.
This is a thrilling audiobook, enhanced by its exceptional cast of narrators who skillfully bring the characters to life. The story exudes a captivating blend of mystery, gothic and spooky vibes, keeping me engaged throughout. The depth of character development was great to see, and it also had a complex cast. There was certainly times where the plot and a character was chilling and kept me on the edge of the seat. This book is a must-listen for fans of mystery and intricate characters.
Rowan and her husband have been called away to investigate a murder. Rowan is the medical examiner and her husband is a detective. The girl murdered is the same age as their daughter. When Rowan arrives home, her daughter is missing. This is a twist neither parent can handle.
Rowan has a past. This is how she ended up in this crime ridden town. And now she knows she is paying for the sins of her past. Her daughter has been taken and Rowan knows it is payback, or is it?!?!
The way this author weaves in the killer is very entertaining. I knew the killer wasn’t any of the suspects. Anybody reading this book would know it. That is part of the plot. So, when the killer is unveiled, it is such a vague character, as a reader, you go “oh there he/she is!” I love when I am kept guessing, even when I don’t really have a chance. (A clue is probably in there and I just missed it)
I have said this before and I will say it again…I LOVE when an audio book is a production. It made this book for me. This book is a bit slow in the set up. But, with all the narrators keeping the characters real, this story turned out to be a pretty good read.
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
Obsessed!!! The audiobook is even better than the book. So good. Great story and characters. Kept me hooked. Thank you NetGalley!
Ooh this was good!
It hooked me right away. There’s something I really enjoy of teenage girl thriller drama and girls behaving badly. It’s not YA, but it still had some of the YA thriller elements that I enjoy.
Multiple POV’s and a puzzle that you have the pieces to but a struggling to find where they fit. This story had me questioning what I thought I knew the entire time.
I really enjoyed this.
Thank you NetGalley for the ALC.
This is a captivating read with multiple narrators. It’s a race against time as there is a teenager missing and dead bodies are starting to surface. This read is filled with suspense and will have you guessing until the end.
Dark, twisted, chilling.
Overall one of the better thrillers that I have read lately and I do have a mild case of book-hangover. I read this as a standalone but I would very much like to read the previous two books set in this town.
Morrissey did a fantastic job capturing the torture that Chloe's parents feel after she goes missing and her best friend turns up dead. They know all too well the truth of how terrorizing the whole order is as they are a detective and pathologist.
This story is macabre, and fits in well on a dark stormy night. It begs the question "how well can you trust those around you?"
This book takes us almost directly into every parent's worst nightmare - having a child go missing. Compounding the nightmare - the parents are Axel and Rowan Winthrop, a detective and the local medical examiner, who are called to the scene of the murder of their daughter's good friend, only to realize when they get home the same night that their own daughter, Chloe, has gone missing. They're caught between knowing too much because of their jobs, and realizing they don't know enough about what's been going on in Chloe's life. Could she be the killer? Is she another victim of the killer? Which would be more difficult to live with? And what does Libby, the teen girl next door, know? This is a well-paced book that kept me guessing. This isn't one of those series that makes you wish it were a real place that you could visit. Black Harbor doesn't sound like a great place to live or work, especially as a cop (although they do stay busy). But Morrissey does populate a dark and unappealing place with characters that I can root for, and she's great at creating dark and twisty plots. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrations were excellent.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for providing a copy for an unbiased review.
ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the multi cast narration on this book! It helped bring the characters and story to life and kept me engaged and entertained! I haven’t read the first two books in the series but was told these are fine as stand alones and I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything that happened previously. I can honestly say that I could’ve never predicted where this book was headed and I loved all the twists and turns! I’ll definitely be checking out other the first two books! If you like mysteries and thrillers be sure to check this series out!
When I began reading I was apprehensive about another detective/police murder mystery thriller, but aspects of When I'm Dead gives it an edge on other novels in this genre.
While technically the third in a series, you could read this as a standalone and not be confused.
This is the PERFECT Hallows Eve read! I devoured it in 24 hours on Halloween, and the vibes were *chef's kiss*.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
Hannah’s books are incredible! Every book in the black harbor series is thrilling, addicting, and intriguing! Each book is darker than the last. The narrators did a great job. I highly recommend everything she writes! Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the opportunity to ostensibly in exchange for a review!
WHEN I'M DEAD by Hannah Morrissey was a fantastic next book in the town of Black Harbor! I paired the digital book with the audio which was expertly narrated by Xe Sands, Andrew Eiden, Caitlin Kelly, & Gary Tiedemann. (I love a cast audio!)
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
All I want to say about the plot here is that this is a story centered around a murdered girl, a missing girl, and then another murdered girl and all the drama surrounding this with the missing girl's parents who happen to be a detective and medical examiner.
I really liked this story. It had all the grit I was expecting from Morrissey with a deeper examination of what this could do to a couple. I liked that the tension kept strong throughout, the plot felt twisty, there were some really heavy sad moments that felt real, and overall I felt so satisfied by that creepy end! I will keep coming to this cursed town to see what is next.
I am a big fan of Xe Sands voice. She has a deep resonance that fit Rowan so well. I loved all the various narrators as well! Having a cast is so fantastic in audiobooks. It made reading this ARC a great experience!
Thank you to @netgalley
@macmillan.audio

for the digital ARC and ALC! This is my absolute favorite way to read, and this is published today! This will be a perfect winter read, so for all you gritty thriller lovers, go grab this one!

"The worst thing about a lie is there's a kernel of truth to it."
And therein lies the turmoil of the chilling When I'm Dead by pulls no punches gritty author Hannah Morrissey; what is a nasty rumor and what is the awful truth to finding a missing teen girl and the murderer of another girl...or is the missing girl the killer?!
In this third book, though very much a standalone, taking place in the high crime world of Black Harbor, coroner Rowan and her detective husband Alex are stunned to find themselves at the crime scene of the brutal murder of their daughter Chloe's best friend. When they call Chloe to make sure she's home safe from a school play their world is turned upside down when she doesn't answer, when she's not home and when searches turn up nothing as to her whereabouts.
With a full cast of tremendously talented voice actors, Andrew Eiden Xe Sands, Caitlin Kelly and Gary Tiedemann, this meticulously plotted crime drama keeps your heart stomping as the bodies pile up, the rumors fly and Chloe is less missing and more a runaway suspect. Rowan and Alex are overcome with guilt by the last words Chloe said to them,
"You'll like me more when I'm dead."
All the time they left her alone for a murder scene, cancelled plans for an investigation, then hear she told her friends,
"The only way they'd notice her was when she was dead."
This writer creates a world where you almost taste the grime of the city, smell the stench of the dead and feel the grittiness of Black Harbor permeate the tense narrative throughout the story.
There are twists, wrong turns and a cameo from Detective Nikolai Kole, from the author's brilliant Black Harbor debut, Hello Transcriber. When I'm Dead let's you know you're alive with every pulsating chapter.
I received a free copy of this book/ audiobook from the publishers via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.
I was absolutely obsessed with this book and immediately looked for other books by this author. I thought it was one of the more grisly books I've read, balanced with the perfect characters who are also in the field. It kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time and set itself apart in all of the mysteries/thrillers out there.
