One young girl is murder and one is missing. Medical examiner Rowan and her husband Detective Axel Winthorp have to leave their daughters play unexpectedly one evening because a young girl is murdered. The young girl is Madison, one of their daughters friends. When Axel and Rowan get home, they discover their daughter Chloe is missing.
This book is set during Halloween so it was a good read for spooky season! This was the 3rd book in the Black Harbor series but can be read as a stand-alone easily. The stories go back and forth between Axel, Rowan and teenager Libby - who is their neighbor, Chloeโs friend, and an integral part of connecting the pieces of this mystery together.
This book shows the struggles between husband and wife as they investigate this case in and outside of work. They both wonder if they knew their missing daughter as well as they thought they did, and if she could possibly be the one committing the crimes.
Pick this up for a fun police procedural book, within a town that is filled with rising crime around spooky season, and work alongside these characters as they unravel the lives of those around them to get to the bottom of the Black Harbor mystery.

This was a multicast narration featuring Andrew Eiden, Caitlin Kelly, Gary Tiedemann and Xe Sands - giving the 3 main POVs in this book and a smaller one their own role. It definitely helped to keep the main characters differentiated while listening! They all played their characters very well.

Thank you to @netgalley & @macmillan.audio & @stmartinspress @minotaur_books for the ebook and audio arcs!
This was my first ever @hannahmorrisseywriter book and I was not disappointed! It is #3 in the Black Harbor universe, but can definitely be read as a stand alone.
I loved the dark vibes and it being set around Halloween! I started the physical of this, but ended on audio, which had a full cast. ๐ค๐ค My favorite. And all narrators were excellent!
I will absolutely be going back and reading the previous two books!
One girl murdered. Another one missing.
When Rowan and Axel are sent to investigate the death of their daughter's best friend, they soon find their daughter, Chloe, missing. Her black roses given to her by Axel found on the walking trail close to home. Evidence of her friend's death makes them question if Chloe is truly missing or is she hiding and waiting to strike again. When I'm Dead follows the different POVs of Axel, Rowan and Chloe's friend, Libby as they find the clues to determine what truly happened to Chloe and her friend.
I was really surprised on how much I enjoyed this book. Although this is the third book in the Black Harbor series, you can read this as a stand-alone without any complications. Listening to the audible, I liked how there were different narrators for each character. It made them distinguishable and added to the story. This book kept me captivated and every time I thought I had it figured out, a piece of evidence or a different POV had me questioning what actually happened. I was shocked by the ending but pleasantly surprised. Overall, this is a great murder/ thriller just in time for Halloween.
The audible of When I'm Dead comes out today!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to review When I'm Dead.
3.5
Let me start off by saying this... this was my first audio book! I could've liked this better if I read it possibly. Possibly.
I normally don't read police type books, but this one was such a hyped book I had to try.
The dual POV was such a treat. I loved hearing the characters slowly figure out in their own way what was going on was wonderful.
The ending almost made the book worth it for me, but a lot of it fell short. I'm not sure if it was just because I found myself zoning out a lot, or its just the info that was put in the book. Either way, I did enjoy it!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC! This thriller (enter all the hand clapping emojis) What a ride this one was. It states that this is the 3rd book in a series... But you don't have to have read the 1st 2, I didn't.
Not having read the first two books, I think this was easy to follow and great thriller story. It was a little slow in areas but overall I enjoyed it
Another bit of a miss for me. I did not realize this was the third in a series so maybe that had an effect on my enjoyment, although it did seem okay as a standalone. Seems pretty weird that Chloe gives her parents a hard time about leaving her play and says they will only care about her when she's dead and then look at that, she goes missing. Both parents are allowed to be deeply involved in their own child's case but there's also times of, what do you want to order for dinner? A bunch of people wind up killed and there is no way to see the end coming because it is entirely out of left field.
I did enjoy the different narrators.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
2.5 stars rounded up
Thank you NetGalley and McMillian Audio.
This novel is part of a series, the third installment; however, I would say it can be read as a standalone. There are subtle references to past events, presumably that happened in the previous books; however, those do not impact the reading of this novel. It was an interesting plot. To be honest, I did not know who the killer/kidnapper was until it was revealed. Usually it is easy to figure it out. In this novel there were MANY red herrings. The reader is kept on edge as this is an ever moving plot witih numerous pieces and players. The characters are deep and their inner dialogue is wraught with emotions of guilt, ambition, and fear. I was constantly on the edge of my seat and the ending will not disappoint.
3/5 stars
This is my first Hannah Morrissey book and I will definitively say this will not be my last. While "When I'm Dead" is the 3rd book in the Black Harbor series, I think this book can easily be read as a standalone novel. There are a lot of creepy, dark and omnious moments in this book. It's twisty. It's thrilling. It's a very fast read that is perfect for spooky season vibes. I enjoyed this book a lot but it was hard for me to rate this book higher that a 3 stars because there were a lot of things happening in this one that just seemed a little too unrealistic. So much crime happening in a town of like 67 people or some bizarrely low number. A town that small would likely not have their own school or police department. The fact that taxidermy is an elective class taught at the school also seems a bit farfetched. It's hard for me to imagine a world where a school would have that as an elective or where that could come into play in a town SO SMALL. Another character using a middle name as a last name... in a town so small everyone would know everyone. I just don't see how that is possible with no one putting two and two together. The mother and father of a missing girl being able to work on the case together as her supposed friends are being murdered... conflict of interest times 3920840392840932. It was the little things that eventually added up to big things for me that left me unable to rate this book any higher than 3 stars. I liked the pacing. I liked the authors ability to tell a story but the details of this story were where I got lost.
Special thanks to Macmillan Audio for the incredible opportunity to review the audiobook version of When I'm Dead. The narrators did a fantastic job. I found myself completely immersed in the story as I was listening. I was able to listen to this book at 2x the speed comfortably. However, when bumping up to 2.5x the speed which is my preferred speed, it was very hard to concentrate on the story.
I first requested this book without knowing it was part of a series so when I realized that it was I decided to read the first two in the series first. The first one, Hello, Transcriber, was ok but I was a bit disappointed and may not have continued the series if I didn't have When I'm Dead to review. The next book was better but man, oh man - this one was fantastic! I am so glad that I stayed with the series. I would like to note though that these books don't actually have to be read in order. They feature the same cops but each book is a stand alone.
I was completely engrossed in this book and would get pissed off whenever I had to do life and not listen to the book (also Xe Sands is one of the narrators and she is one of my favorites).
I thought the pacing in this book was great! Morrissey gave just the right amount of hints to keep you guessing and wanting more. I was emotionally invested and right there with Axel and Rowan as they desperately try to find their daughter.
Thank you to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an advance copy of the audiobook for review purposes.
So my spooky reads all ended up being murder mysteries and Iโm not mad about it.
One girl murdered. Another one missing. And a medical examiner desperate to uncover the truth in the latest Black Harbor mystery.
A small eerie town with a serial killer on the loose? Yes please. Multiple POVs and so many suspects made this book a page turner. This is a perfect creepy read to carry on spooky season through November!
I absolutely loved this book. I was able to fly through this and was on the edge of my seat the entire time. After reading this book, I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
Well this one was a fun who dun it! I could not for the life of me tell you who the killer was as every chapter it changed. The ending was amazing and it brought the whole book full circle and I enjoyed it immensely.

Just like I like a good thriller specially during spooky season. Loved the pace, loved the characters and the twists. A page turner.
Thank you Minotaur Books and NetGalley for this gifted copy.

Police detective, Axel, and medical examiner, Rowan are called to the horrifying scene of their daughter's best friend's murder. As they do their jobs with hearts heavy with the ramifications of such a grisly murder, they have no idea they soon will be pulled into an even worse nightmare. Their daughter, Chloe, hasn't come home. This is my first Black Harbor novel and I enjoyed the fast paced, edge of your seat mystery. The author writes palpable tension between parents trying to do their job while living in the unbelievable what ifs. As the plot moves foward the reader is introduced to all the players in a teen's life and the constant questioning of what is innocence. The narrators of the audiobook do great jobs in keeping the plot moving while giving each of the character's their own voice. I highly recommend the audiobook. I'll definitely be reading the past two books in the Black Harbor series and look forward to the new ones! Thanks to NetGalley and the audiobook publisher for a free advanced copy for an honest review.
Wowza, this has to be one of my favorite police procedural mysteryโs ever! While I loved Hello, Transcriber, this one takes the whole cake! Morrissey has a way with words that they just make you want to read more. I loved this murder mystery with relationship drama!
While this is technically a part of a series, this can be read as a standalone, you just wonโt connect some of the Easter eggs from the first 2 books.
You definitely need to add this to the TBR, because this one is amazing! I went between reading and listening to this book, which I loved because I got the best of both worlds. While there was a whole cast of narrators, I absolutely love Xe Sands voice!
****Many thanks to Minotaur Books, Macmillan Audio, Hannah Morrissey, and NetGalley for my gifted copies in turn for an honest review.
This book takes belief suspension to new heights. I am supposed to believe that the most crime ridden town in Wisconsin cut the police budget so much that they would let a mother/father work on their kid's own missing person case and related murders? I am supposed to believe the town has a two neighborhoods, one super rich and one super poor, and they all use a pitch black walking trail to get around? This town is both really small (two neighborhoods) and really large (has a high school with 400 people that pay 20k a year to attend?). And also I am supposed to believe that they casually offer taxidermy as an elective and let the kids take their tools with them with no safety protocols for locking/storage?
The narrator for Rowan was absolutely TERRIBLE. This is the first time ever that I have preferred the male and teenage narrators over the adult female narrator. She mumbled and I felt like I was in a fog whenever it was Rowan's turn to narrate. I also felt like Rowan's character added absolutely nothing to the story, but if she didn't remind us that she accidentally killed someone every time she had the chance we might forget that KARMA is the reason her daughter Chloe is missing (eye roll/face palm/etc).
The plot itself wasn't terrible, and the ending was certainly creative, albeit deeply disturbing.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC.
When I'm Dead by Hannah Morrissey is a book from the popular Black Harbor series. The story begins with the murder of a teenage girl, Madison. The Medical Examiner, Rowan and her detective husband, Axel, are called in to investigate the murder. The same night, their daughter, Chloe, who was best friends with Madison, goes missing. It does not help that Chloe's last words to Rowan were "You'll love me more when I'm Dead". Riddled with guilt over all the times they left their daughter alone to work various cases, Rowan and Axel, dive deep into the mystery of Chloe's disappearance and how it links to Madison's murder. When another teenager ends up murdered, Axel and Rowan, start looking into their daughter and the secrets she's been keeping, especially related to her drastic change over the past year.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. When I read the blurb, I thought it was going to be one hell of a thriller, but When I'm Dead is a less thriller and more a cozy murder mystery. The plot line was too predictable and one-dimensional. The tropes included missing child, toxic friendships/high school bullying, multiple murders, and isolated/crime-fueled locales. There were too many glaring inconsistencies with the medical procedures and crime/police procedures, which was hard to ignore. The prose was fine but slightly repetitive. The pacing was fine but slightly stretched. I found the timing of the story around Halloween to be interesting. It's a good book for this time of the year. Overall, this was an alright read, but nothing too exciting for me.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for providing me with an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
One girl murdered, one missing, gruesome clues left behind with a full cast of suspects. This latest Black Harbor novel was a dark and twisty domestic thriller slash police procedural that works as a standalone but is set in the same town as the previous too books. A great SpookySeason read, this book is also set in October and has lots of creepy Autumn vibes with an end I didn't see coming. Good on audio too with a full cast narration. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early audio copy in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you @macmillan.audio for a 3rd book of the Black Harbor series. Rowan and Axel returns with a busy case of finding of her daughter's best friend murdered. Not only that but they learn that their daughter, Chloe, is missing. The story is told in multiple POV and keeps throwing all sorts of twists and turns. It's atmospheric and dark and reveals the cruelty of high school life and Rowan and Alex question how much they really know their daughter.
