After her husband dies suddenly photographer Georgina Drake moves from London to the beautiful, sleepy Little Wenborough in rural Norfolk. She’s getting used to being on her own & supplements her income by letting the converted diary next to her home. One day she opens the door to the barn and finds the dead body of her latest guest, irritable university professor Roland Garnett. And on top of that she’s suddenly hearing a woman’s voice through her hearing aids. Completely shaken by the discovery, Georgina can hardly believe it when the police conclude that Professor Garnett was poisoned, with a dinner delivered by Georgina herself. Roland Garnett offended half the village during his three-week stay and made unwelcome advances to the rest. Georgina’s best lead is the deadly oleander found in Roland’s system.
A new author to me & a new series. I thoroughly enjoyed this cosy mystery. A well written engrossing mystery which I thoroughly enjoyed & I look forward to more in the series. I loved the audio book, which really brought the book to life & the narrator did a lovely job
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was a cozy mystery novel. I loved the setting of the book with the quaint small town. Georgina was a sweet main character and brought so much to the mystery. This was a decent and fun read.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley.com. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was a great cozy mystery. Georgina is retired and still grieving the sudden death of her husband. She has moved out to the country away from her kids who worry about her. When she discovers the body of her tenet who died under suspicious circumstances they are even more worried.
Georgina also starts hearing voices in her hearing aids. She isn't sure what or who it is. With all these mysteries she sets out to find out more about the tenet and his movements. The police however would rather she stay out of it.
As she meets others in the village she realizes that if the culprit isn't caught soon it could destroy all of their business with rumors and gossip. With the help of her new friends they start making discoveries that may help the police but also get them in trouble.
Great narration, plausible story line and fun characters. I really enjoyed everything about this book. It is also currently free on kindle unlimited.
This was everything I was hoping it would be. A cozy little mystery that evoked Marple in name and cozy village content. I loved the narrator, and I enjoyed following the story through a few twists and turns. I look forward to reading more of this series.
This is one I'll return to occasionally for a re-read.
An interesting spin on a ghost story, where this one can be heard and not seen, and only by one person, and they become fast friends. Someone no one likes dies, the town ladies get together to investigate so they don't become serious suspects, and the local police investigation introduces a bit of potential romance. It's a cozy and it was a comfy read.
This book was a wonderfully written cozy mystery — all the characters are quite likable —I was able to figure out the killer about 85% into the story —but it is so quaint and so Miss Marple-like — that it was an enjoyable listen. The narration was very good and helped keep the flow going in the story. This is a paranormal murder mystery and will be great a series with these characters.
Thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape Select, Storm Publishing. This is my honest review.
‘The Body at Rookery Barn’ is a charming cozy mystery with an elderly lead who’s lovely to spend time with.
Premise - When a widow gets a new hearing aid she starts hearing a voice no one else can hear. Soon after, she comes upon a dead body in her barn, which she had converted to a vacation rental for guests. Together with some other women from the local community, Georgina sets out to find out who poisoned her guest - and clear her name.
The book has:
* an abundance of coziness
* small town charm
* a lovable protagonist
* twists to keep the reader guessing
* a cute community that bands together
I don’t ordinarily like ghost stories and I think the book would have been as strong/stronger without the paranormal element, but the cozy vibes were immaculate and I enjoyed the book all the same. Cozy mystery fans will love Georgina!
I’m glad this is the beginning of a series, I look forward to reading more of Georgina’s shenanigans!
Thanks, NetGalley and Storm, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was an entertaining first in series, with likeable but intelligent characters and a good mystery. It also includes a paranormal element that is peripheral to the primary storyline but a nice addition. If anyone is not a fan of the paranormal, not to worry. This is a light touch with zero chance there will be witches, vampires, and the like.
Georgina is an interesting character. She is a widow and portrait photographer with 2 well adjusted adult children (how refreshing) and a significant hearing loss requiring her to wear specialized hearing aids. The new hearing aids she picked up the day of the murder seem to be picking up more than she bargained for, but thankfully Georgie is not given to hysteria. Colin, an inspector with the local police, has his own scars, and while both are reflective from time to time, neither are maudlin or locked in their pasts. The remaining characters are the usual mix of quirky villagers that bring humor to the story. This is a book that could have gotten lost in the myriad of similar storylines, but it doesn't. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I had so much fun with this one! It was sad, wholesome, sweet, and funny. There is a body in the holiday cottage and there is a completely unrelated ghost talking to our protagonist.
The ending was super sweet!
And I loved the narration.
