The narrator for this book was great! Growing up we always went to a lake with our cousins and this made me remininse about those days.

With hidden secrets and family conflicts, I was hoping to enjoy this book. I found that I struggled to finish and just was not drawn to the story or the characters.

Thank you #NetGalley and #Dreamscape Select, Storm Publishing for the opportunity to listen to this early audio version in exchange for a review.

This story was definitely a multi-layered onion of a story to peel off bit by bit.

As a set of sisters reconvene at the family lake house to mourn the shockingly fast and surprising death of their father, they uncover a secret their father kept well-hidden. As they all examine their own lives, they question if anything they knew was really true and decide how much they want to dig into what they've found.

I really love a good family dramatic story where we learn more background on each family member and then watch it get weaved together. This one definitely Kept me going!

Honestly I was so excited to try an audio book and the story sounded like something. I would enjoy but honestly I couldn’t get thru it. No matter how many times I tried to listen to it I just couldn’t. I did not enjoy the voices of the little girls. And it was so monotone I found myself not listening at all more frustrated than anything.
I might pick up the book to try the story but I found audiobooks are definitely not for me unfortunately

Last Summer At the lake house was a beautifully moving story of life, love, loss and learning.

The story follows a family through the complex loss of a much loved father and husband where it wasn’t quite as it seemed on the surface. The plot took twists and turns as the characters grieved, grew, and discovered reality.

The book handled some complex situations with elegance but realism, which made for an interesting read/listen.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It's interesting but in some respects rather unbelievable. The relationship between the three sisters is pretty believable, but the fact a huge secret was kept in a small town for 30 years is not. It was not surprising that the mother knew about the affair - or that she wanted the girls to stop digging for information. It was sad that the girls - especially Alex - did not realize that they were hurting their mother more by not letting the whole thing go. It was also hard for me to believe Jess knew this secret as a young child yet kept it a secret. Children in general aren't good at keeping secrets and with the sisters being so close, it seems unlikely Jess could have kept this to herself. Hunter seemed too good to be true.

This book is good for someone who wants to read - or listen to - something that doesn't require much deep thought. A good beach read.

A very moving story. The book was written really well and I felt like all of the main characters had depth and understandable personalities. Hunter felt a little like a forced side character, but I didn’t mind it too much. I did struggle with the audiobook narrator’s voices for the children’s dialogue and the laughing. Just really took me out of it.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I could not get into this story or connect with the characters and ended up not finishing it.

A story of love, family & the secrets we all keep. I was granted an advanced audio version of this book & very much enjoyed listening to it.

“Last Summer at the Lake House” follows sisters Alex, Sam & Jess as they navigate life in the aftermath of their father’s death. The trio travel to be with their mother at the lake house they all hold dear. While they are together, it becomes apparent the entire family has been keeping various bits of information from one another, and the secrets begin to unravel as they channel their grief.

An easy audiobook to listen to while working or traveling.

This was just okay. The narrator was definitely hard to listen to and the voices she gave to the young girls was very grating. But the plot was filled with contradictions: the sisters are close yet not, they hold grudges yet forgive, they keep secrets for decades but then let them go. And the setting is a sleepy lake town that is small and friendly, yet an affair can go on for 30 years without anyone aware of it seemed like the greatest contradiction.

‘Last Summer at the Lake House’ written by Heather Dixon and narrated by Patricia Rodriguez, is a family drama.

Alex, Jess and Sam return to their family’s lake house when their father dies unexpectedly to provide support to their mother. Once they arrive in Summerville, the three sisters process and grieve in their own way. During the grieving and reminiscing of their times with their father, they learn of a family secret after finding letters written to him that he hid in the garage. They are shocked to learn of an unnamed woman who was in their father’s life.

The author takes you through the lives and perspectives of each sister – where they are in life, where they want to be in life, what they are challenged with in their lives. The author makes this book so realistic you feel like you are in a conversation with one of your girlfriends.

Sisterhood, grief, family, summer – what more could you want in a good summer read! I’d suggest this book as a beach or pool book – a quick listen/read.

I'd rate this as a 3.5.

The family drama kept me hooked on this one. I enjoyed getting to know all the sisters and how they reacted to the betrayals of the past. The narrator did a good job.

This is not the kind of story I usually read or listen to but somehow it got mee hoocked!
When summoned back to their family's lakeside retreat in Summerville following the passing of their beloved father, sisters Alex, Sam, and Jess find out about a long hidden secret.

They find a collection of passionate letters tucked away in the shed by the lakeshore. Not all sisters want to find out what happened partly because of their love for her father and own motives for avoiding the truth.
A coincidental encounter at a local grief support group leads Alex, the sister who wants to uncover the truth, to an astonishing revelation about her father.

I really enjoyed this story about family, sisterhood and grief especially the development a person goes under, when finding out, that not is as it always seemed to be.
Narrated by Patricia Rodriguez it was a pleasure to listen to

I really enjoyed listening to this but it was a very emotional listen, so I took it in stages but I listened to it when I was in the mood for it and it delivered. I will definitely listen to more by both author and narrator.

I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

This was an interesting story, but one that didn't seem all that plausible to me.

When Jess, Alex and Sam's father dies unexpectedly, they return to their family's lakehouse to help their mother with all that goes along with grieving. In the process, a huge secret is discovered about their father, and the sisters each process the news in their own unique ways, but united in the thinking that they have to keep the news from their mother.

The major problem with this whole premise is we're given to believe that the lakehouse is in a small town. And the secret was ongoing for thirty years. Everyone's impression was that the girls' father and mother had a solid relationship and were to be admired for their commitment to one another.

Living in a small town myself, there is no way a secret this huge would be kept for more than a month, much less for thirty years!

So while I enjoyed the storytelling and the unique characters involved, the storyline itself was off-putting because it wasn't believable for me. Given the quality of the writing, though, I would enjoy checking out a different book of Heather Dixon in future.

The story begins with the sudden death of Alex, Sam, and Jess' father. While I anticipated a deep exploration of the grief and sorrow that comes with losing a parent, the book did not delve too deeply into it. However, considering that everyone experiences grief differently, I found that the book instead focused on the aftermath of discovering that someone wasn't who they seemed to be. The story is narrated from the perspective of each of the sisters, presenting a unique and captivating account of their experiences. Each sister has her own conflicts to face, making their individual stories distinct. The emotions expressed by each sister felt authentic and true to their personalities. I adored the way they bonded with each other and continued to strengthen their relationship while grieving the loss of a loved one and uncovering family secrets. My only gripe was that the girls' affection for their father seemed to diminish after he did something wrong. Overall, the story depicts a delightful portrayal of sisters spending their last summer together at their childhood vacation home with their mother. They grieve, learn, and grow together.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This was an ok audiobook. Good narration. The story itself was interesting and pulls you in to the family drama. Sisters trying to figure out their father’s past transgressions while also hiding them. A family coming together after a loss. The end of relationships and beginning of new ones.

When their father suddenly passes away, Alex, Jess & Sam all return to their mom's side to say goodbye to the man that they THOUGHT was a great father. Okay - with a setup like that, you wonder, what did he do OR is he their father - He IS their father, just a suck one. One that they didn't realize how sucky, until they stumble across some "carefully hidden" letters. Throw in a random drunk boyfriend, a hot new neighbor, hiding grief support group meetings and 30 years of secrets and you have a fabulously soapy drama. If dear ole dead wasn't already dead - he would certainly need a good pop in the nose - by EACH of them!! I enjoyed this book and absolutely recommend!! Happy publication to Heather Dixon and Last Summer at the Lake House! Thank you to Heather Dixon, Dreamscape Select, Storm Publishing, and NetGalley ( @netgalley ) for allowing me to read an ALC (Advanced Listener 🎧 Copy) for an honest review!

📅 Thursday, October 26, 2023 was the pub date for Last Summer at the Lake House. The narrator🎙️for this audiobook 🎧 was Patricia Rodriguez. 📅

Heather Dixon is a new to me author. Last Summer at the Lake House is the perfect combination of learning to let go, how to manage uncovered secrets, the importance of forgiveness and remembrance, and how to celebrate the past while growing and cultivating the future.

The unfortunate circumstance of their father’s heart attack and death brings three sisters (Alex, Jess, and Sam) back to their family home to help support, love, and care for their mother.

They never suspected that they would be challenged to support, love, trust, forgive, and care for one another. There is a lot to be said about the true bonds of sisterhood, as well as fostering and growing a family. Can the sisters overcome everything and have each other’s back when it’s most important?

I appreciate the importance that the author placed on grief counseling in the book and how it shouldn’t have stigma attached to it.

I also appreciate that the main characters learn something new, and even shocking at times, about each other. Family trust and loyalty win in the end regardless of the magnitude and impact of each secret that is revealed.

This book is a great read for anyone that appreciates women supporting and lifting up other women. It has a splash of romance for the lovers out there.

Just when you think you know everything about your family, your father passes away, and as you’re cleaning up his things, you realize that there are secrets, you didn’t know about and wonder if others in your family knew them. This book was an interesting journey for daughters, whose father died, and they found letters to him from someone and they were on a track to find out who. This is an interesting book as daughters find out that there were secrets from the past that could now hurt their familial relationships. Who all knew and kept the secrets. Was it just dad or were there more people that knew? They are going to find out. A good book that will have you wondering who knew.
