Personally this story was a little too slow for me with too many characters to focus on. I found it hard to really connect with any one of them. However, it was well written and each character was fleshed out, but I would have liked more focus on Kate and Matt. The romance between Kate and Matt felt a little stilted at times and he didn’t have much personality.
I really enjoyed the setting for the story and the descriptions made the background come to life in my mind as I was reading. This is a good read if you like found family, coworker relationships, a larger cast of characters to know and don’t mind a slower plot.
Trigger Warnings: sexual assault, toxic work environment.
Thank you NetGalley & HighBridge Audio for the eAudio ARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
My review has been posted on Goodreads & Instagram.
‘Reasonable Adults’ is a quirky winter comedy with a lackluster romance, but a charming cast of supporting characters.
Premise - Kate is a 30-something hot mess. When she loses her boyfriend, her job, and her dignity, she leaves the big city for a too-good-to-be-true job at a remote luxury resort.
Once at the resort, she realizes her failure to properly read the contract landed her in an unfortunate situation at a failing business, and with a nightmare boss to boot. Still, before long she finds herself falling for the quirky Treetop community.
The setting and the supporting characters were the book’s greatest strengths. The setting was like ‘Nine Perfect Strangers,’ but cozy instead of creepy. The supporting characters felt real and easily won my interest.
Unfortunately, I was not sold on Matt and Kate, neither as a couple or as individuals. Their choices did not make sense to me, especially how he reacted to an incident in the third act and how Kate responded to his reaction later on. I love a Christmas romance, but this one would have been better without the two leads!
Thanks, NetGalley and HarperCollins, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I could not get invested in this story no matter how hard I tried. It just felt like the author was trying too hard with the descriptions, detracting from the story itself. I had high hopes with the premise. I didn't find any of the characters likeable, and the romance was lackluster.
Reasonable Adults is a joy to read. The main character is relatable, and she could easily be everyone's best friend. I am a new fan of Robin Lefler.
Full transparency, I'm a bit of a
Christmas book apologist. If a book is even remotely Christmasy, I'm likely to give it an extra half star, maybe even a full star if the setting is idyllic enough. So this book was pretty much set to get at least 3⭐️ without even trying until I was forced to DNF at about 75% point. Not just because it was a relatively standard romance without anything special and a deceptively Christmas cover without any actual holiday cheer, but because the male love interest (who is about as exciting as a can of corn) had the fucking nerve to scream at and try to slut-shame a woman who he just saved from being sexually assaulted by her ex boyfriend. FYI no trigger warning even though she's manhandled and fondled against her will come one guys do better.
This book is called Reasonable Adults but mediocre, boring lump of crap of a man didn't even give her a moment to explain what went down he just immediately goes into asshole mode. That's tiny dick energy. He finds her ruffled up, with tears in her eyes, screaming at her ex and being defended by her dog (the most lovable character in the book thh) and he assumes she made a plan to have a secret tryst? Get the fuck out of here, in the year of our lord 2023 I'm not finishing a book with a hero who embodies TDE
I thought the narrator was phenomenal! I really enjoyed her pacing and enunciation. I thought the plot of the story was a little tedious and hard to get through. It focuses a little too much on the work aspect for my own personal liking. I also thought the contract that Kate signed was a little outlandish for how much they wanted her to improve the resort. I thought kate was a great character, but most other things in the book I could not get behind. I was not a Matt fan and definitely think he and Kate fell into a trap of you're the only person around so let's date. I think this book leaned more towards women's fiction than romance, so if that's more your style you'll enjoy this book!
Thanks so much to @netgalley for the chance to review Reasonable Adults by Robin Lefler. After she embarrassed herself on social media, Katie was let go from her job. She finds a new opportunity at a beautiful retreat location. She meets an amazing cast of characters and of course, has a trusty canine companion. Funny and sweet, this was a pleasure to read! The narration was perfection.
This book was a bore. I couldn't get into it. The audiobook was not great which largely influenced my liking of the book. I won't be endorsing this book.
I loved the title of this book and the cover seemed super cute. As a woman in her early to mid 20’s, I’m still learning what being a reasonable adult means, so I liked the idea of reading about characters who had their own trouble with that definition.
Unfortunately, whether it was the book itself or the voice actor’s narration, or a combination of the two, I felt myself cringing repeatedly and wasn’t able to make it past the 12 minute mark.
Thank you for the ARC, but sadly this one just did not work for me.
This was a GREAT story to listen to! AWESOME narration! Great main characters. The plot was easy to find. The story was engaging and easy to follow. Will be purchasing this book. Shout out to Netgalley and publishing for allowing me to listen and review this story.
4 STARS!
Adorable! I loved all the characters, especially Eric’s silly butt (IYKYK). I wish there were more of a wrapped up conclusion with the ex and the friends but all and all a very cute story.
About half way through I forgot there was only one narrator. That is an amazing fete. The narrator did a terrific job differentiating between characters.
Reasonable Adults is a cute book. I like all the characters, my fave is Kate the down on her luck new comer. This book is funny and a bit sad. I liked when Kate finally got into her job and realized she loved it. I liked the wedding, it kinda brought a tear to my eye. I look forward to this authors next book. I believe this is a debut book, WTG Robyn this book is awesome.
Struggled with this one. I found it not only hard to get into but also the content was... off. The sexual assault scene alone was enough to make me put it down. The way it was handled was completely off base. Really disappointed.
