This book sampler provides the first six chapters of the story "With a Little Luck."
I am unfamiliar with this author's previous works, but I did find myself deeply impressed with this author's writing style. Meyer writes in a breathtaking way that connects you to all the characters in the story.
There is content in this book that I don't typically read, including D&D and comics, both of which are topics I know absolutely nothing about. However, the comic in this story was a nice addition and tied in perfectly with the plot.
It reads way more unique than a typical YA book, and that is super refreshing to see.
Overall, I think it will be a cute new book for young adult readers, and it will succeed as a coming-of-age book.
This was a very cute sampler that will definitely get readers interested in the book. Even though it was a sample, you get a good idea of what the cast of characters is like. The characters and distinct and diverse, which was very fun to read about. The premise is enticing and the comic included is very well done. Definitely one to recommend!
I loved this! Jude was such a sweet character in Instant Karma, so I'm so incredibly excited to read about him even more. I loved seeing Prudence, Quint and Ari as well.
I requested this sampler because I am a fan of Marissa Meyer's books. I enjoyed this and look forward to reading the entire book once it's released and see what happens to our characters next.
With a Little Luck seems like it will be the perfect book for readers who devoured Instant Karma. I already really like Ari and I’m looking forward to seeing where Jude’s choices take him. I also enjoyed Jude’s relationship with his siblings. Marissa Meyer is an auto-buy author for me, so I will definitely check out the completed book!
Thank you to Marissa Meyer, Feiwel & Friends, and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the sampler in exchange for honest feedback.
Thanks to Macmillan Children's Publishing Group and Feiwel & Friends for this advanced sampler! You can pick up With A Little Luck February 13, 2024.
This was so cute! I loved the family dynamic between Jude and his siblings, and how much we learn about them in such a short span! And, of course, Jude’s friendship (growing relationship?!) with Ari is too wholesome for words.
I’m super curious to see how the magic plays out in the rest of the book! The dice intrigue me, and I’m curious to see how all this luck affects Jude’s character. Will be picking this up in February!
Best way to describe the story: super cute. It has a unique and fun spin to YA genre, which is not easy. It's been a while since I read a story from Marissa Meyer and it's great to see that she continues to deliver high quality writing, with well thought out plots, and realistic characters.
i am absolutely loving this story so far! i really enjoyed instant karma and am very excited to read more in the same universe. jude's narration style is so fun and the cast of characters is very well balanced. the art and music in the book is so fun and i am itching to read the rest of it!
I. Cannot. Wait. For this to come out!! I adored Instant Karma and all of its' instantly lovable characters so I can't wait to see where this one takes them, especially Jude (because he was my favorite).
This was such a cute read! I couldn’t stop from the time I started it. Hopefully I get approved for this one because it’s such a sweet story I would love to finish reading. I recommend everyone read this one!
"With a Little Luck Chapter Sampler" offers a delightful taste of what's to come in Marissa Meyer's upcoming sweet romantic comedy. This charming sampler introduces us to Jude, a young boy who just wants to navigate high school quietly, focusing on his passions like drawing comics, hosting D&D nights, and helping out at his parents' vinyl record store. However, his life takes a turn the night he finds himself magically endowed with an extraordinary stroke of good luck.
Meyer paints a vivid picture of Jude's journey as he suddenly becomes the fortunate recipient of opportunities he's only dreamed of. His art gets published, his friend's song becomes a finalist in a competition, and he even wins coveted concert tickets to finally ask out his long-time crush. The transformation of his life is nothing short of magical, and this sampler takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as you watch Jude grapple with his newfound luck.
The story raises some intriguing questions. How long can Jude's streak of good fortune last, and is it all it's cracked up to be? Most intriguing of all is the conflict Jude feels as he begins to question his feelings, even finding himself contemplating his best friend, Ari. The heartfelt exploration of teenage emotions and relationships is relatable and endearing.
With Meyer's signature blend of romance, coming-of-age drama, and a sprinkle of magic, "With a Little Luck" promises to be a heartwarming story that speaks to anyone who's ever experienced the ups and downs of young love. If you're a fan of Marissa Meyer's other works or enjoy contemporary romantic comedies, you'll likely find yourself eagerly anticipating the full release of this charming novel.
this book starts off so amazing! I can’t wait to be able to read the whole story. Jude is such a sweetheart trying to figure out life as a shy boy, and then has his whole perception of reality altered which changed his who outlook and strategy for dealing with his life. Ari is also a fun character and I can’t wait to see her and Jude’s friendship strengthen and grow in this magical realism romance story!
"I've got a decent imagination, which is almost as good as epic quests and true love. Imagination surpasses real life...what? Ninety percent of the time? Tell me I'm wrong. You're the one with your nose in a book right now, so I know you agree with me, at least on some level." (loc. 42*)
Jude has things pretty good: close friends, a family he likes (most of the time), a satisfying hobby. If he doesn't have a love life right now, well, that's okay. But then Jude finds a spectacular gaming die, and things get...weird. Good weird. *Lucky* weird.
In some ways, reading this preview was the best of both worlds—enough time to see a likeable character have some good things happen to him, but not so far into the book that that started to get complicated, or for things to go awry and *un*lucky. It begs some questions about what you would do with a run of good luck—do you try to target that luck? How random is it, really? And just how long can that run of good luck last?
The sample I read contains the first six chapters, which is ample space to get a sense of these characters. Tons of energy to go around, and generally good vibes (I love that even the character who's being set up to be the wrong love interest—i.e., not the right one after all—is also being set up to be a generally good person, regardless of romantic fit), and an entertaining concept. It should be a lot of fun to see where things go from here.
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing these sample chapters through NetGalley.

'With a Little Luck' sampler was delightful.
marissa meyer in the romcom genre is something i did not expect (knowing how well known she is with writing well loved fantasy retellings), but this was great! i am if not a character girlie and just from the 70 pages we got, i find myself adoring jude and ari (friends to lovers u are loved by me), even jude's siblings were adorable! also, a quick appreciation to the art, because flipping from a page to be greeted with that little comic was such a lovely surprise.
will be looking forward to this!
