I received a free copy of this book from Bookouture through netgalley.com. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I applaud Ms. Watson for a truly uncomfortable read. I can't imagine the tension flying through through the air at the Lodge where Fiona is staying with her two kids, her ex-husband and his new wife and baby, her ex mother-in-law and a suspicious woman who was hired to cook for them.
Everyone in the house has secrets and they are stuck, unable to leave, due to bad weather, and the police discovering a hit and run murder of a man from their home town. Secrets are revealed slowly but not before suspicions and accusations fly.
Just when I think I had things figured out I was taken in another direction. It was totally brilliant and the ending was shocking and believable. What a great edge of your seat mystery thriller.
I would have liked to listen to this and leave a review, but it got archived before I had fully downloaded it.
I read this ARC in less than a day! I thoroughly enjoyed it! I love a book that keeps you guessing and you end up surprised at the end- which is exactly what this book did. Everyone in this story seemed to have a secret so it was nice to be surprised at the end!
The Lodge
Sue Watson
Andrea Wilson reserved the Lodge in Kynance Cove at Cornwall, for her 75th birthday celebration. She insisted her whole family attend the celebration, after all it could be her last one. The first to join Andea at the Lodge was Fiona, her former daughter-in-law. A short time later Fiona’s son Sam and daughter Georgia arrived. Andrea’s son Scott, his new wife Danni and their daughter Olivia were the last of the family to appear. Andrea had hired Jenna a French Chef to prepare their meals.
The tension was almost unbearable, the new wife and former wife under one roof. Fiona hated Danni after all she had taken her husband. Danni felt intimidated by Fiona. Danni and Scott have a screaming argument after which she disappeared in the midst of a snowstorm.
Characters: I was team Fiona. I liked her and she had my sympathy. Her ex-husband had an affair with a younger woman. Scott was the head teacher at a high school; that’s where he met Danni and Jenna. Danni was very immature. This was the definition of a dysfunctional family. Jenna was strange; it was obvious she was up to something. Andrea was a manipulator.
This is an intense drama filled with resentment, murder, animosity, fury, and secrets. The story was told from Fiona, Scott and Danni’s point of view. There are twists and turns galore. I didn’t figure out who dun it until the very end of the book.
“I’d been wearing the shade of wronged-wife-bitterness for too long, I was ready for something more positive. So that weekend I would swathe my pain and rage in muted shades of grey. Exuding love, light and acceptance in winter white wool lounge pants paired with a dove-grey fluffy hoodie, I planned to slay .” Yesss girl, SLAY
A glass fronted lodge. A blinding snowstorm. A husband, his mother, current wife, ex wife, and children at said lodge. Add to the mix a cook with possible sinister motives and one murdered man on the road leading up to the lodge. Can this family make it out of their weekend away without killing each other?
4.5 stars!! Oh man was this book addictive. I listened to this exclusively and the audio was done SO WELL. With dual narrators you got the different voices and tones for each wife, Danni and Fiona. There were so many moving parts here and so many questions as the story progressed. Who is loyal? Who is stepping out on their spouse? Are the kids in on the drama?
This was a fast paced thriller that I just could not put down. And that twist at the end?! I did NOT see that coming. Well done, Sue Watson. Well done.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Bookouture Audio for the ARC and ALC in exchange for an honest review.
The Lodge was extremely atmospheric! I felt like I was snowed in at the lodge with the family! This story was full of twists and turns. You didn’t know who you should trust and that kept me hooked.

This is the fifth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'First Date', 'The New Wife', The Nursery, 'The Wedding Day' and 'The Forever Home' and I highly recommend each and every one!!
This novel consists of a prologue, 30 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all making your heart pound and you constantly second guessing.
Another huge success by Sue!!! This book has got to be the most heart racing books I've read in a long time, if not ever!!! It had me hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter it ended on a cliffhanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! This kept on happened over and over until before I knew it I had devoured the whole book in one sitting!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this yesterday afternoon and finished it at approx 2am, read it in one sitting and although I'm knackered today it was 1000000% worth it!!! I absolutely adore the fact that it is set in an isolated lodge where the characters are all confined to due to the weather as well as under police instructions. Any books set in spooky or isolated areas always get bonus points from me as it definitely ups the suspense levels several notches!!! Sue's evocative writing and Tamsin and Alison's fantastic narratives ensures you are whisked away to the isolated lodge in Kynance Cove in Cornwall leaving you shivering in the cold and guessing who did what and who he something to hide. I loved that you got to meet a small selection of characters each with different characters and that there was a mix of personalities and limited suspects!!! It keeps you constantly guessing who did what!! It is filled with family, arguments, deceipt, lies, love, secrets, twists, turns and everything you could want from a psychological thriller along with some MASSIVE BOMBSHELLS which will leave you absolutely shocked!!! I for one was NOT expecting that at all!!! The fact that there wasn't just one bombshell that shocked me, towards the end it was like a war one of them and I was absolutely blown away. My jaw literally hit the floor!!! I don't think I have ever been as gobsmacked as I have after reading this absolutely gripping page turner! This book is rammed with suspense and tension and will keep you biting your nails, on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding while your flipping the pages because you just cant stop. Sue when are you getting this made into a movie so I can be the first in line for it!!! Another fantastic success as always!!
This is one of the few books that I have listened to 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrators Alison Campbell and Tamsin Kennard who both did an amazing job bringing this story and the characters to life. I have previously listened to 'Her First Child' by Sheryl Browne, 'The Suspect' by Kathryn Croft and 'My Daughters Boyfriend' and 'Her Husband's Mistake' by Daniel Hurst that were all also narrated by Tamsin Kennard and I would highly recommend listening to or reading them all as it they re other fantastic page turners from other great authors!! I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity. I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Sue but also to listening to more books narrated by both Tamsin and Alison!
One thing I loved about this book is that was only a small group of characters making it a very locked door type mystery. Each of the characters had their own unique personalities as well as each seeming to have something to hide. It leaves you trying to work out who is hiding what and if any of the characters can be trusted. Angela is the reason they all come together as it is her 75th birthday. She is the mother of Scott who is husband of Danni and father of Sam, Georgina and Olivia. Sam and Georgina's mother is Fionna and Olivia's mother is Danni. Low and behold Angela has invited the whole dysfunctional family to celebrate and in non other place but a lodge and in one that gets snowed in none the less!!! As there are such a small number of characters I am not going to go in to detail about them as it will be too much of a risk that I will give something away. What I will say is that Sue's fantastic evocative descriptions and writing skills along with Tamsin and Alison's amazing narrative skills bring each and every one of the characters to life in front of the readers eyes. I was completely invested in each and every one of them and although there were several occasions where I was shouting and screaming at certain characters there were others my heart went out to. I won't say anymore but a huge well done to Sue, Tamsin and Alison on the creation of these characters and bringing them to life. Regardless of whether you love them or hate them they each bring something to the storyline to make it as intriguing and addictive as it is.
Sue I really hope you are working on your next psychological thriller at this moment because this book will go far!!! A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on what promises to be a MASSIVE success and here's to your next 🥂!!
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue and first two chapters of Sue's 'The Sister-In-Law'. I haven't read this yet but after reading these chapters I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy!!
Overall an absolutely heart racing, claustrophobic, nail biting, unputdownable thriller with a bomb shell you will not see coming!!!

I had high hopes for a relaxing mountain vacation story, but this book took a dramatic turn by adding in a mother-in-law, an ex-husband, and his current wife. The ensuing chaos felt like a whirlwind of soap opera twists rather than a relatable family getaway. While the over-the-top reveals weren't quite my cup of tea, fans of high drama might find it appealing. I'm a bit disappointed. ⭐⭐⭐
This was an amazing book. The author had twist and turns it took kept you on your toes during the entire story. The characters are very believable and entertaining.. a highly recommend book.
I enjoyed the book! Finished in just a couple days as I was left wondering what was the end result … for one of the first times I had it figured out, but not how it would all go down!
Enjoyable psychological thriller !!
Just finished listening to the audiobook “The Lodge” by Sue Watson.
When the matriarch of the family asks you to stay at a lodge to celebrate her 75th birthday, you go. Even if the matriarch is your ex mother in law.
The police arrive to say there was a hit and run and then someone goes missing- are the two connected?
This was a book of secrets for sure. Each character had their own secret and each is a suspect.
I really enjoyed this book. By the middle of the book it became very hard to put down. I definitely recommend it!
A relaxing vacation with your family in the mountains. That sounds like a fun time. Now throw in your mother in law, ex husband and his current wife. Now that sounds like a real nightmare. For most people you would never put yourself in that position. When they all arrive at the cabin is one over the top reveal after the next. Nothing about this book is realistic. It’s sort of like watching a soap opera. If that’s your sort of thing you will probably enjoy it.
I'd just like to say that I'm positively gah-gah over this book. I couldn't get enough. Couldn't stop thinking about it. I understood the perspective of each character. They were all so relatable. I just freaking loved it!
Great thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a fun read even through all its dysfunction. An extended family, complete with unfaithfulness, new and old wives and children, and much emotional baggage, is gently coerced into spending a few days at a remote vacation lodge with their grandmother. They quickly get snowed in, a dead body shows up, and the questions begin. This one will make you grateful that you’ve never known a group of people this complicated. Entertaining!
This was archived and removed from my shelf before I had a chance to listen to.. I really wanted to listen to and attempted to download 10/26
3.5 stars

The Lodge is a gripping psychological thriller about family drama! There are many twists and turns, some predictable, some truly surprised me.
Angela Watson is about to have her 75th birthday party. She has decided to invite her son and the rest of his family, his current wife, ex wife and her grandchildren out to the lodge. When everyone shows up, an officer appears telling them there has been a murdered body discovered on the road. It can only be one of them who committed this terrible crime. Who is the culprit?
Soon, the snowstorm has locked everyone in, causing intense tension between the wives.
Would you go on a weekend away with your ex-husband, his new wife, and your mother-in-law?
Before you answer, let me throw this little tabby in among the pigeons... the new wife is the woman he had an affair with, while still married to you. Well, call me old-fashioned, but it's a very strong no from me. Despite her trepidation, Fiona Wilson decided to do just that, albeit reluctantly. Tensions run high, there is a storm setting in, and apart from Scott and Danny we have dreadful Jenna, the cordon bleu chef (or is she?). Angela (the mother-in-law who is not herself) and Fiona and Scott's almost grown-up children. Not surprisingly, things soon go from bad to worse.
I love these 'snowed in, stranded on a desert island' style of locked room tale. Christie's masterpiece (and I think forerunner to all others) And Then There were None will always be the benchmark, but this one wasn't bad at all. I never saw the ending coming, not even close, and I must say, it fascinates me that such things can go on in a family and no one knows about it. Secrets, dark and deep. This is a solid author who always delivers and this was no exception.
3 and a half stars rounded up.
Angela invites her full family to celebrate her 75th birthday in a lodge which cannot be accessed in case of bad weather. It was supposed to be a weekend get together, until one of them goes missing.
Angela's son Scott has come with his 2nd wife Dannie and their little baby, while his 1st wife Fiona has come with their grown up kids Sam & Georgia.
There's also a sous chef Jenna who has been brought along by Angela - but rest of them are wary of the way Jenna behaves as there's a bit of history to it.
When Dannie goes missing all secrets starts coming out from the past, along with this the police are also investigating a hit & run case which seems to be intentional and when the H&R case victim is identified it’s guaranteed that there’s a killer among all these supposed family members.
The Lodge by Sue Watson was a powerful, gripping thriller and I enjoyed listening to the Audio ARC in one day.
Thanks to Bookouture Audio, Sue Watson and Netgalley for approving the audio ARC.
3.5 ⭐️ rounded down .
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced audio ARC for an honest review.
Gotta be honest sort of guessed it all 😢
A great quick read but nothing revolutionary in there . Just couldn’t get with any of these characters except the lovely granny/ mother/ mother in law, such a cutie 🥰
