I am so glad that I made the decision to read this first book in a new series. I love watching hospital dramas on the television. I am certainly craving a new series of Grey’s Anatomy – I digress. Learning about Danni’s impossible situation was heartbreaking. To be caught in a love triangle would be devastating, especially when the other parts of the triangle were your closest friends.
Danni is a great character who carried the task of leading the story beautifully. Her inner turmoil at being faced with the return of the reason she left London and then becoming embroiled in Connie’s dilemma was tangible.
Danni’s story arc was excellently delivered, and I found her character to be completely relatable. I can only imagine how I would react to her predicament but would like to think that I could be as dignified in my actions. I certainly can’t imagine being any different. Connie was a particularly interesting addition to the story and following her from the point of first appearance to unravelling her secrets was wholly satisfying. As for Lucas, he was necessary to the story but someone that I just didn’t take to.
The seemingly effortless way that the story built was remarkable and one of the many reasons why I will definitely be reading the rest of this series, as it is released. I’m so pleased that I decided to read this book and cannot recommend it highly enough.

Danni hopes to have a fresh start when she moves. She needs to get over a guy she loves because he is engaged to her best friend. That didn't last long when they decided to come along and work with her in the same hospital. She needs to figure out what is more important to her, friendship or the growing attraction.

I like the storyline and the backdrop of the hospital made it all that more exciting. But for some reason, I just couldn't get into the story. Maybe it wasn't a good fit for me.

Danni has always wanted to be a doctor after her father passed away when she was 10 years old. She decides to move to Cornwall from London because she's in love with her best friend's fiancee. She has wonderful memories of her late father there and feels that she can have a fresh start there. However, no sooner does she get settled but her best friend, Esther, who is a nurse, and her fiancee Lucas, who Danni went to med school with and the man that Danni can't get over announce that they are following her to Cornwall and getting jobs at the hospital where she's currently working. Danni is distressed as she is hoping for a fresh start. Soon she settles into life at the hospital and develops a friendship with Connie, a patient there. As their friendship develops Danni soon discovers that if she really listens to her heart she might find happiness and love again.

I really enjoyed this story about life at a small town hospital in Cornwall. It was a sweet, small-town story with great characters, secrets, stories, and a bit of romance. I hope this book develops into a series as I loved the characters, setting, and stories and would love to see where they go from here.

Hopefully the start to another hosptial series by this author - I enjoyed the hospital location and the relationships between the various hospital staff. I could see myself returning to this location!

I enjoyed my first visit to the Cornish Country Hospital and meeting new and familiar characters from the Cornish Midwife series. Danni finds herself in Cornwall after needing to escape from her friends Esther and Lucas. Her feelings for Lucas have defined her for too long, and she would never act on them because of her friendship with Esther. Cornwall starts to become home, but her friends follow her to Cornwall and the hospital, threatening her happiness. I like the authenticity of Danni's dilemma and her gradual self-realisation, the hospital setting and the dynamic between the team in the emergency department. It's an emotional story full of sacrifice, drama, secrets and romance.

Set in Cornwall, Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital introduces Danni Carter, an A&E trauma doctor who moves from London to Port Kara and back to the coastal cottage that holds so many happy childhood memories of her late father. She is also trying to put distance between herself, Esther and Lucas. Esther is her best friend however Danni has secretly been in love with Lucas, now Esther’s fiancé for years. Her hopes for a new start are dashed however when they both follow her to Cornwall – and to the same hospital, St Piran’s.

Danni was a very likeable, capable and engaging character, even if her taste in men seemed questionable at times. I did feel sympathy for her when instead of her fresh start, she faced heartache on a daily basis working with Lucas. Esther was a joy of a best friend and I could understand why Danni was torn between following her heart and protecting their long standing friendship. Esther and her family were such a strong support for Danni and making the wrong decision would have devastating consequences.

Danni is not the only character with a secret, supporting characters such as Connie play a big part in the story and alongside the romance element, which is very gently dealt with, there is plenty of drama and difficult decisions to be made. Hospital volunteer and former midwife Gwen is on hand to offer advice but will her wise words be of help?

I always enjoy Jo’s books, her characters are so well written and there is always a storyline that has depth and emotion. I know this is the first in a series and I’m hoping that a future book will conclude the situation in respect of one character. I shall certainly be reading more, the Cornish location is fabulous, and the hospital setting, together with the ups and downs of friendships and relationships felt authentic. I can’t wait to see what happens next at St Piran’s.

I love Danni's relationship with patient Connie, and I found the descriptions of the medical emergencies engaging. I also really liked the appearance of some well-loved characters from the Midwife series - good to see Gwen hasn't changed!

A great start to the series, looking forward to book 2.

Welcome to the Cornish Country Hospital is written by Jo Bartlett. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be my last. While I am from the US - I appreciated all the detail that the author put in of Cornish coast of Port Kara. I felt with her descriptions I was watching everything unfold in front of me.

Danni, is a doctor consultant in the A&E department. She has been in love with her best friends fiance for as long as she can remember. So much so, that she moves from London and accepts a job at tiny Cornish Country Hospital. She settles into her new life thinking that she will finally be free of her thoughts of Lucas. After all, Esther is more like a sister to her.

However, Lucas and Esther decide to also move to the country side. Danni is not happy about this. She throws herself into her work, and during a major catastrophe she meets Connie. Connie has secrets of her own. Danni is drawn to Connie, and she helps her work through some past trauma, experiences and they form a friendship.

Things I loved about this book: The characters, they are funny and real feeling. The whole staff at the hospital seems to have their secrets and I loved how deeply involved in their lives I was able to get. I also loved the setting. As stated above the author has done a great job with her descriptions.

Jo Bartlett is an excellent storyteller, one who tells the stories of everyday people. Her characters can struggle with everyday problems or with big issues but they're always realistic and relatable.
This new series starts in an excellent way: there's romance, new beginnings, new relationship.
I enjoyed the relationship of Danni and Connie as it's important and a sort of turning point.
I wasn't a fan of Lucas and Esther as I felt that their decisions impacted Danni but were not discussed with her. Let's be honest: if we have to work in the same place it would be nice to say something.
My personal pet peeves apart I enjoyed this story and I'm curious to know what will be in the next novels in this series.

I have read several of Jo Bartlett’s midwife books before and enjoyed them all, so I was looking forward to reading her new series, book one of which is Welcome to The Cornish Country Hospital.
We meet Danni Carter (and her new dog Brenda) who has moved to Cornwall to get away from the love she feels for her best friend Esther’s fiancé Lucas. But after taking a job at the local hospital, St. Piran’s, she discovers Esther and Lucas have moved house and are also going to be working at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Danni gets to know a patient, Connie who is in her sixties and a university lecturer. When she thinks she may be dying, Connie entrusts Danni with her secrets – a letter for someone called Richard and a message for her niece Darcy. Connie’s life resonates with Danni’s. Is Danni wasting her time on a love that can’t work out?
It’s an exciting start to the book and makes you want to keep reading. I soon got into the story and wanted to know what would happen, especially as we get to follow both Danni and Connie’s lives. I really liked Esther too and there is a great cast of characters overall, including the wonderfully straight-talking Gwen who I loved in the Midwife series of books.
There’s everything you could want here – drama, romance, conflict, emotional highs and lows, as well as interesting storylines and brilliant characters. I liked the new setting and enjoyed finding out about St. Piran’s Hospital and its staff and patients, as well as Danni’s new home, the surrounding area and her cute dog.
It’s a great start to Jo Bartlett’s new series and I look forward to reading more soon.

For Danni, it’s a difficult decision when she leaves London to work as an A&E doctor at the new hospital in St Piran’s – while it’s good to be living in a place her late father loved so much, she needs to build a new life away from everything that’s familiar. Her friendship with Esther was a really special one, but very much tested by her feelings for surgeon Lucas – but he’s now engaged to Esther, and she has to allow them to find happiness together. The fresh start doesn’t work out as she hopes – they both follow her to Cornwall, working at the same hospital, and she faces the difficult decision of what she needs to do next. Which is more important to her? Should she move once more to keep her relationship with Esther, or give in to her attraction to Lucas with all the devastation that would cause?

Danni’s agonising decision plays out against the backdrop of day-to-day life at the hospital, with glimpses into the lives of the other staff members and the patients who find themselves under their care – and I’m delighted to report that a particular favourite (as inappropriate as ever, but every bit as warm and lovely) from the Midwives series is to be found helping out in the shop and pushing the refreshment trolley, and there are cameo appearances from others. But the main supporting story is Connie’s, injured in an accident while visiting the area – she has a poignant and deeply hidden secret, and Danni becomes increasingly involved in her life as her full story slowly unfolds.

Both stories are tremendously engaging, with that special emotional touch that always distinguishes the author’s lovely writing. There’s a strong focus on friendship, beautifully handled – and on family too, with Danni having found the kind of support from Esther’s parents that she no longer had, adding an additional layer to everything she’s risking with Lucas’ unsettling presence. And Connie’s story explores that theme of family further – with the hope of a happy ending, but a particularly difficult journey before that looks remotely possible. And there’s romance too, really well done – laced with difficult echoes of the past for Connie, but from a wholly unexpected direction for Danni.

I loved this book – while there’s anguish and heartbreak along the way, the whole story is uplifting, heartwarming and beautifully written. The hospital setting is well-researched and so well drawn, but so is the wider Cornish setting – I loved Danni’s clifftop walks with her dog, and spotting the seals on the rocks was a particularly special moment. And the characterisation is so excellent – developed throughout the book, as both women feel their way into an uncertain future and search for a path that will bring them happiness. This is a series I’m going to really enjoy – this book is the most perfect introduction, and highly recommended to all.

Danni transfers to a hospital in Cornwall for a fresh start, however is dismayed when her best friend Esther and her fiancee also follow her there. This is the start of secrets, lies and possible new beginnings.
This story works well on many levels. There is the hospital side, which shows some of the strains that they work under that covers the drama, secrets from many years before, which adds mystery, plus romance of course. Add the setting of glorious Cornwall, a touch of hope and this was a book that I definitely enjoyed.

Working at St Piran's Hospital in A&E Danni is busy. Esther, her best friend is getting married to Lucas, who she has been secretly pining for the past seven years, without anyone knowing about it, especially Esther.

But, now they’re both at the same hospital as her, and with time, she starts to see Lucas for how he really is. Knowing she must tell Esther what she thinks, will her words be believed by her friend? Will Danni be able to stop the wedding from taking place?

The story had plenty of secrets, both kept by patients and the staff.

I highly recommend this book.

Love a good Jo Bartlett Book and this one was yet another great read. A new series and one where Danni Carter moves to Cornwall from London for a new beginning, a fresh start. But her previous life (and the people in it) follow her to this wonderful location.

Her best friend Esther and her fiancé Lucas not only move to Cornwall but get jobs at the hospital Danni is working in. So what will happen to the new beginning Danni strives for? The characters in this book are what really make this story come alive. Love them all.

There are secrets, drama, friendships, maybe even love. This is a well written book, is an enjoyable and entertaining read. The setting is great and love the hospital theme and can't wait to see what comes next in this new series. 4 1/2 stars from me.

Living in Cornwall myself, I love finding a book that is set there. Bartlett’s writing really captures the beauty of the coast and makes you feel like you are there. The grey, blustery weather, clifftop walks and beautiful views of the coves.

Life at St Piran’s hospital gave off real Greys Anatomy vibes. The subtle use of medical jargon was unexpected but as a GA fan I appreciated it, along with all of the drama.

I loved Connie from get go and seeing her story unfold was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. I predicted a bit of the storyline but other moments took me by surprise.

Esther & Dani’s friendship was beautiful, true soulmates, I think everyone deserves a friendship like that. Even though there were times that Lucas made it difficult between them, you could still feel the love they had for each other.

I loved Charlie’s character and he is an absolute cracker of a ‘book boyfriend’.

It did take a while to get into as the chapter’s & paragraphs were longer than my usual preference. It soon started flowing though and overall I really enjoyed the plot.

Closed door romance

This book has all the Greys Anatomy vibes; the medical setting, the friendships, the drama, so much drama.

I truly enjoyed how Danni, the main character, had her priorities in place and did not let anyone intimidate her.
She knew that her friendships came before a man, and throughout the story, I was able to see the character development.

I would've loved to see character development in Esther, Danni's best friend, instead of her attitude being a switch from one moment to the other. I felt horrible for Danni when she told Esther the truth 😭
Additionally, SOMEONE should've gotten what he deserved. But the development of the story to show people's true colors was excellent.

Jo Bartlett did it again . She wrote an amazing book . We are back in Cornwall but in a hospital is where the story is take place . Danni has just moved to Cornwall and the hospital of St Siran because she wanted to be away from her best friends Esther's fiance Luca . They all worked at the same hospital and she was in love with him for the last eight years but she never act on her feelings because she loved her friend more . Now they tell her that they will move in Cornwall as well and they will be together . One of her patient Connie is back to find the love of her life after forty years . Will he forgive her for the secrets she kept from him ? Will Danni find the man of her dreams ?

Having enjoyed the Cornish Midwife books I was delighted to see this book from a new series. I enjoyed this just as much as the CM books and was pleased to see some of the characters from that series pop up in this book.

Danni lost her father when she was young and his death broke her family. She developed a wonderful friendship with Esther at university but she also falls in love with Esther’s boyfriend then fiancé. She does not want to hurt Esther but is having trouble not acting on her feelings so she takes a job in Cornwall. She is starting to enjoy her new life when Esther and Lucas follow her to the same hospital. She will be seeing them everyday. She doesn’t know how she can resist Lucas. She bonds with a woman whom she saved from a bus wreck who also has a secret.
I have to say that Lucas is really clueless or he wants both women. As much as I love the characters, if he is aware of Dani’s feelings then he doesn’t deserve either woman.
For me this book started slowly in regard to the romance. I wasn’t sure I was going to be happy with the outcome if Danni and Lucas got together. How could she keep her friendship with Esther if that happens?
I started this review as I was reading it and decided to keep what I wrote. I enjoy the author’s writing style. She makes the characters come alive and she has great side characters, too. You will have to read it to find out if there is a HEA.
