Truth or Lyon by Katherine Bone is a unique romance set in the interconnected world of The Lyon’s Den. If you have ever played #TruthorDare I think you will enjoy this story. Personally I didn’t think the story had enough romance and what was included wasn’t until the end of the story. While the story wasn’t bad, per se - it moved too slow for me and felt like a lot of the building blocks of a historical romance were simply missing. There was a certain je ne sais quoi missing that made it very hard for me to connect with the story.

Apparently this book is part of a series and part of the protagonist conflict is shown in a different book, and i say this because i felt like i was missing part of the character intentions to the point it had me yelling WHAT HAPPENED, so i would definitely recommend read the previous book
Great series and great book! Don’t miss this one! If you haven’t read the series before I suggest you get started!
Historical Romance
This story did not resonate with me. There was lots of banter between the protagonists, but for some reason, it did not work for me. Also, in this story, Mrs. Dove-Lyon plays a very minor role. I would not discourage you from reading the story, because your taste might be entirely different than mine. I have enjoyed this author's books in the past. I just did not like this one as much as previous works. I think the epilogue was my favorite part of the story; it was the most romantic part.
Sadly, I didn't like this book. I didn't understand which was the conflict that got Thenie so flustered before meeting Spencer. I never got wat Spencer was trying to do when he proposed their game. I definitely never understood the role of Lottie and Grey nor why their relationship to The Lions Den was really important.
If you've been reading the Lyon books then this one is a don't miss. Not as spicy as some but a delightful read with an unexpected twist.
Thenie wants to marry only for love, and therefore not thinking things through before acting, she subjects herself to scandal when she implies to a potential suitor that she has kissed someone else. Her potential suitor, in turn, slanders her reputation. Thenie's actions not only affect her, but her younger sisters' prospects are affected as well. Her cousin Lottie and her husband Grey call on their friend Spencer to rescue Thenie's reputation. Although Thenie is immensely attracted to Spencer, she is skeptical of forming any type of attachment given his rakish reputation. It takes some challenges and quite a bit of persistence on his part to help Thenia realize her true feelings for him.
The story was entertaining and enjoyable, but I have to admit, I would have liked to have seen more of an appearance from Mrs. Dove-Lyon. To me, she is an important part of weaving the story together, and in this latest addition, she was greatly missed. But all in all, it was a good story.
Thank you to Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for a complimentary copy. This is my honest review.
In Truth or Lyon Mrs. Dove-Lyon the owner of the most notorious gambling den in London the Lyons Den has a cameo appearance. I missed the game of chance that is usually played and villains overcome. It's a quick read, I read it in an afternoon. But a secret is revealed which I was not expecting.
I received a ARC copy from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
Thank you NetGalley for a different kind of read about the Lyon's Den. The book was well into the story before it mentioned the Lyon's Den. Spencer has returned to London with Theine's cousin and she has broken up with her fiance. He has an interest in her. The family is interested in antiquities, mostly with the Elgin Marbles. Will she be allowed to see the Marbles? Spencer and Theine will have a game of truth or dare.
I felt as if I was walking through a maze of words as I read this novel. There were some interesting historical notes, but the romance left me confused and bemused. Spencer is charming and one cannot help but love him. However, I did find Porthenia, or Thenie to her family and friends, a rather disagreeable character. The novel does, fortunately, come to a sweet conclusion, but it is not one to linger long in my memory. I received a copy of this novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
What an odd story! A kiss is a kiss, unless you haven't really been kissed. A stain supposedly on her reputation, leads to help from Theine's cousin and her husband. Is slander really attached to her name by a jilted suitor? Where is Mrs. Dove-Lyon? A surprising secret is revealed. Kissing only.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
This was the most difficult of the Lyons books for me to read. First off I missed the interaction and creative matching that belongs strictly to Mrs. Dove-Lyon. Then I'm not a huge fan of indepth detail as I must prefer lively banter, wit, a good villain, mystery and interaction between all the characters. Thenia was too much of an "oh poor me" and less of a "roll up your sleeves" type person so I really struggled with her personality. I have read this author's work before and enjoyed her talent, yet sadly I can't say this was a favorite of mine. That said, this is only my opinion and I recommend that you read the story and make up your own mind regarding how much you enjoy it. My taste may not be yours and I'd hate for you to miss an opportunity to enjoy a story that truly touches you.
Spencer, an antiquities hunter and rake, is immediately attracted to Thenie when they meet. Thenie is holding out for true love. They play a cat and mouse game until they realize they both want to be caught. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
Enjoyed the story. I was disappointed that Mrs. Dove-Lyon played only a cameo role in this story. There is a major surprise that I did not expect but was interesting. The two main characters, Thenie and Spencer, I loved how they interacted with each other and the ending HEA. I liked that previous characters appeared in this story which were great additions. Definitely a story worth reading.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and are voluntarily leaving a review.
Truth or Lyon is the 48th book in the Lyon's Den series.
This book is a little different than most of the others I have read. Mrs. Dove-Lyon is not an integral part of the story. While she does appear, for me she is missed. A game of truth or dare between Spenser Wright-Smythe and Porthenia Steere begins and ends with a prize, a kiss, which threatens her future, but the more they play the game the less they are likely to quit.
I liked this story, but I missed the Lyon's Den and Mrs. Dove-Lyon being a larger part of the story
Spencer Wright-Smythe, Baron of Kilverstone & an antiquities hunter has something of a rakish reputation. So when he’s introduced to Miss Porthenia Steere, she’s instantly on her guard, even though the attraction she feels is almost overwhelming. Pothenia has already set the cat among the pigeons by spreading a scurrilous rumour about herself in order to avoid a betrothal.
This is different from the other books, which are connected to the Lyon’s Den & I’m not sure it can really be classed as part of it’s world. That said it was an interesting novella & there was an awful lot going on. So much so that things seemed to gloss over the surface rather than having any depth, either a long book or less happening would have been better
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This story was so cute and amazing! I don’t wanna spoil anything by saying too much so I’ll just say, everyone should be reading this! Go read it and fall in love with it like I did!!.
I have read a decent number of the titles within the Lyon's Den Connected World, and in complete honesty, I am not sure how this book qualifies as a part of that universe. The mentions of Mrs. Dove-Lyon felt a little bit like they had been added later simply to get the Lyon's Den identifier included on the cover. Setting that issue aside, this tale didn't capture my interest as much as I would have liked. Spencer coming home to "save" Thenie (which, BTW, the timing totally doesn't make sense - why would Thenie's cousin think a scandal was brewing more than 2 months before one actually was) seemed contrived for a character who didn't seem to want any part in settling down. Thenie spent way too much time hand wringing versus problem solving. I did, however, like the ending, where instead of having a baby, Thenie and Spencer were having an adventure.
3 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonsblade for a complimentary ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own.
A lot going on....
Maybe a bit too much in a short read? Thenie needs rescuing after ruining herself.
Spencer Wright-Symthe is a Baron, who is a relic hunter. Thenie's cousin Lottie (who seems very cool) brings him to Thenie to rescue her from herself. There's a lot crammed in here.
