I LOVE authors who use humor to instruct, or to just, you know -be funny, and Elise Gravel has the funnies in spades. Here she collects three of her Disgusting Critter titles for a delightful book that makes learning fun. Worms, and spiders, and flies . . . oh, my! They may give you the heebie-jeebies, but they're pretty fascinating and useful critters.
I'd be more than happy to have Gravel explain the universe to me in her own inimitable way.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the ARC of this!
My son (8yo) loved this! He thought it was just the right amount of funny and I felt like it had a good amount of learning. He's excited to read the rest of the series, though he is hoping for one about the stinkbug in the future!
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own
I'm feeling slightly disturbed knowing that there is a 115ft worm or larger on this earth. The book is funny and educational with wonderful illustrations.
Disgusting Critters: A Creepy Crawly Collection is a compilation that includes three of Gravel's other titles: The Worm, The Spider, and The Fly.
Filled with humorous text, fascinating facts, and adorable illustrations, Disgusting Critters will appeal to young children and beyond.
Elise Gravel's books are a wonderful addition to any home or school library. This collection is no exception. Highly recommend!
Kind thanks to Penguin Random House Canada - Tundra Books, NetGalley, and the author for an advanced reading copy of this delightful book!
A cute introduction to some of the creepy crawly critters we see every day. I loved the illustrations and thought that this was a nice collection of Worm, Fly, and Spider. 5/5
🪰 This book is a delightful compilation of three previously published books by this author called The Worm, The Spider, and The Fly.
🕷️ In a witty and engaging manner, the author shares fascinating facts about these “disgusting creatures”. The humor sprinkled throughout the pages makes learning about worms, spiders, and flies surprisingly enjoyable.
🪱 The illustrations are particularly amusing. I laughed more than once!
🪰 Whether you’re a curious child or an inquisitive adult, this book promises to reveal intriguing tidbits about these critters that you probably didn’t know before.
🕷️ If you are interested in this book (which will be available on 11 June 2024), you may also enjoy the other books about bugs and creatures this author has available, such as The Mosquito, The Rat, Head Lice, The Cockroach, The Slug and more!
Thank you @netgalley and @penguinrandomca @TundraBooks for an eARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
A compilation of three previously published titles. These stories felt like they were a bit abridged. I always enjoy Elise Gravel's titles and the humour she brings to non-fiction subjects. And the fabulous illustrations.
Adorable illustrations. Sassy humour. Simple and educational facts. Grossly fascinating. Expands opinions of critters and challenges stereotypes. Creates opportunities for questions and discovery. Clever and witty. Evokes feelings of amusement. Recommended for those wanting to step outside their comfort-zone. Overall, a good book.
Disgusting? Maybe. But also so, so cute. These pictures give the creatures so much personality, and the text is filled with facts but also humorous and fun.
There's always something fun about learning about anything gross or disgusting, and kids will really love this. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
A great book of creepy critters for young inquisitive minds. Great books on creepy crawly critters with awesome illustrations. My kids were engaged through the whole book.
Let’s start with a round of applause for the illustrations. Wow!
This book is a simple, approachable to learn about critters that are thought of as disgusting and the ways they are helpful to us.
All the disgusting critters and where they show up in our lives. Some places are unexpected, gross and some are just on our walls. We share our lives with these creepy crawlers and it's good to know some of the facts of where they come from.
thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the ARC.
My kids and I loved this book! They are at an age where they're into all things gross- so this was right up their alley. The illustrations were fantastic!
I recommend Elise Gravel’s books to all kids who want to learn and laugh or just laugh and enjoy a great book. Even though I have seen all of these critter books in their individual volumes, this collection with three together is a great read and kids will love to learn the disgusting facts about these wonderful critters!
I'm a recent Elise Gravel stan, having recently used her book Killer Underwear Invasion book to support a unit on digital literacy. So, I'm humbled (and a bit ashamed) to admit that I had never heard of Gravel's Disgusting Critters series. But good news for me: three books from the series (Fly, Spider, Worm) are being published together in this collection. Suffice it to say, I love the books, and this collection was very entertaining. This will be a definite must-buy for my libraries that don't have these titles.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and Elise Gravel for the advanced e-copy of this collection in exchange for an honest review.
I love this series. This is a compilation of the previously released worm, spider, and fly titles. This is a great way to introduce readers who are unfamiliar with these books to all of them at once.
I love that the illustrations are silly and cute, while still covering a "yucky" topic.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
This will be a fun series. I loud the simplicity of how the facts are presented, it makes it accessible to a variety of ages. The bright and high contrast illustrations are great too.
Elise Gravel created a fun, silly, and informative book filled with fun illustrations. This will appeal to curious and brave kiddos with an interest in the disgusting (and fascinating) world of critters.
This is a book I would happily buy for the illustrations alone, but it would be a great addition to any kiddo’s library.
The illustrations and scientific facts about creepy crawlers are great for little ones in this book! Perfect for a young nature explorer.
My boys love bugs! I do not, but luckily this disgusting book doesn't actually have disgusting pictures! It's educational, funny, and eye catching. Definitely a hit in my family.
