I get what this one is trying to say, equating patience with a personal achievement. And I'm familiar with the idea of "stars in your crown" but will the average child know the phrase? Because the book never explains it. And that could be a real barrier for some.
Thank you Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. These opinion are completely my own.
Nice story about family, patience and accepting change.
This is a good book to help kids learn how to manage their emotions. When teaching about feelings and emotions this would be a good book to reference and have discussions about the main character's actions and growth throughout the book.
An important lesson wrapped up in the celebration of the Caribbean diaspora in Canada!
Tony has a temper, but Grandma knows how to empower him with jewels of wisdom. Patience is key when facing great change. From Trinidad to Canada, he must keep his grandmother's words in mind if he wants to find his way. I liked this! I would have enjoyed more discussion about Trinidad and Trinidadian customes.
The main character harbors a lot of anger that causes him to lash out. It especially surfaces when he has to move and leave his wise grandmother. Her lesson to put stars in his crown is the visual he needs to control his emotions.
I didn’t really love this book. I’m glad I read it once but I wouldn’t read it time and again. I liked the point of the story but it didn’t mesh well with all that was going on. Temper, patience, missing home it all was alot for the story.
