Magic books! That was enough to hook me. But really, this was a surprisingly touching story. It took me places I didn't really expect to go emotionally.
I really, really wanted to love this one but I DNFed it. I couldn't get into it; it was just too sad and lonely to start. The potential for magic wasn't enough to keep me reading.
The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown was a fantastic adventure. I loved every minute of the journey. I can only imagine the fun I would like to have if I had a door that lead to every door. After reading this I am happily going to by myself a hard copy as this is one I will read again and again even knowing the outcome ahead of time. I feel like my second read will be even better as I find tidbits and easter eggs throughout the book.
A beautiful, heart-warming and highly entertaining debut novel. Claire loves books and works in a bookstore in New York City. One night, a favorite customer passes away in the bookstore and leaves her a magical book: The Book of Doors. So begins Claire's thrilling magical adventure. I won't say more about the story because it's better to go in blind and let the suspense roll. I am a big fan of a certain type of fantasy story and this one hit all the right spots. If you are one of those who devoured the Harry Potter series and still crave more than this one is perfect for you. I picked this at a time when I needed a break from reality and a little bit of magic to make me feel upbeat and it more than did the job. The writing is easy, the characters resonate, and the story has great pacing. What I found unique and commendable, is how the author deftly weaves together the events and characters in a non-linear timeline so that the whole thing eventually fits together seamlessly like a jigsaw puzzle. A bit like life coming full circle. There is a generous smattering of quotable quotes and life lessons as our heroine embarks on her quest to save the world. Totally recommend if you are in the mood for some light, easy magical reading which will leave you feeling warm and hopeful at the end.
Thank you NetGalley, William Morrow and Gareth Brown for the ARC.
This is a hard book to classify! It's about books, yes, but also magic/fantasy, but also a thriller, and there's a dash of romance and found family. It was a fun adventure and I was hooked from the start. I loved the world the author built. The pacing was a little funky, but I really liked how it all came together.
Many thanks to NetGalley, William Morrow, and Gareth Brown for the eARC.
We appreciated the opportunity to read the ARC for this book, but it was DNF’d. Sometimes it is hard for a man to write women or write from the female POV, and this is one of those times. Just really rough all around.
The only way I can think of to say how much I loved this book is that I bought a copy for my shelves immediately after I finished it. This will be a top book of the year.
I was obsessed with this book very early on and I stayed obsessed until the very end. This was so magical and incredible!! The writing, the story, the genre combination, the freaking characters. This book was EVERYTHING. I started out by listening to the audiobook, but switched to the ebook about halfway through so I could read it even when I wasn’t able to listen to it. And THAT is a sign that I loved this book. I didn’t want stop reading it and I’m so sad that it’s over.
I wasn’t sure what direction this book would go in, but it was better than anything I could have predicted. The twists and turns as more is revealed about these magical books had me on the edge of my seat. It was so beautifully written and the way everything circles back at the end to be connected is nothing short of incredible.
The found family where the most unlikely people come together to defeat evil?! OBSESSED!! I am a sucker for found family and the one in this book had me 🥹💞🥰🫶🏻😭
I wasn’t expecting this book to make me cry, but the last two chapters had me SOBBING to the point where I was struggling to catch my breath. And then it goes straight into the acknowledgments as if my heart wasn’t just ripped out of my chest and stomped on 🥲
This is one of those books that I wish I could erase from my memory so I can read it again for the first time. No notes. This was perfection.
Wildly imaginative and an incredible journey. If you are a book lover, this is everything you might have imagined. A world where books can take you anywhere, transfer you powers or create new fantastic illusions. Or they can be devastating and haunting as the words have been imagined. I loved reading about all of the different characters and the books.
This book started out a little slow but did catch my attention with a small bookshop and a death right away. I thought the concept was neat and unique.
This book was a little slow for my taste, and the writing did not flow for me. I DNFed for now and may give it another try at a later date.
This was a great book. If you like magic, adventure, fantasy, and romance this is all in this story. This takes place in NYC in a bookstore, where the owner's name is Cassie. She loves book and her customers. One day a customer dies right in front of her and she's devastated. She sees the last book he was reading was a book of doors. This is no ordinary book. You need to know how to open the doors. It was very well written and a book for every age group. It was a remarkable read, I would definitely read this book again and I would highly recommend this book for like a book club especially.
If I could write a love letter to a book, this would be one of those books! 💕
First of all I have to complement the author for how exquisitely they developed the plot and characters! The set up of the story was easy to follow, even though it moved around a bit, and as far as I could tell—no plot holes!!
The way this story tugged on my heart strings and made me feel emotions I don’t normally feel when I’m reading, was incredible! I wasn’t even halfway through, and I knew this would be a comfort read for me and something I’ll revisit at some point in the future.
Read this book if you enjoy:

I would absolutely give this book more than 5 stars if I could! It is a standout, debut book and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to read it! Thank you to the author and William Morrow Books for a free copy in exchange for an honest review! 🫶🏻
A young lady employed at a used bookstore is left a mysterious book by a frequent visitor upon his sudden death at the store. Cassie soon finds that this Book of Doors is her gateway to any door, anywhere and any time. It doesn't take long before others come looking for this magical book, and Cassie finds herself in a community of "special" book collectors, some good, but some evil. She and her friends are then caught up in a game of cat and mouse as they try to keep the magical books out of the wrong hands.
This book was engaging and fairly fast paced. Readers who enjoy portal and time travel fantasies will particularly enjoy it. The story would appeal to young adult readers as well as adult fantasy fiction fans.
I adored this book. Give me a book about books and I will eat it up, but this book was so much more. I made me laugh, cry and feel terror at times. The friendship between Cassie and Mr. Webber had to be my favorite part, There were the right people at the right time for each other.
I was not expecting a found family but that is what we have with them. I would even say there is a second found family with Cassie, Drummond, Lund, Izzy and Azaki,
Getting to the end of how it all pulls together is an amazing journey and I am glad I was able to go on it. I cannot wait to see what else this author has in store for us.
I really had high hopes for this one. It looked and sounded so intriguing. I’m not sure where and why it fell flat for me. I tried so hard to get into it. I kept finding myself starting to wonder off while trying to focus and really get into it. The premise is very promising. For now, I’ll leave this as an unfinished review in hopes that I can try again and maybe get into it a little better. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I took a bit to finish this book, but I really liked it!
I loved the premise of being able to open a door at any time to travel. This is a readers dream…to be transported somewhere magical!
I enjoyed the story, and the pieces that got darker. I compare this to a light VE Schwab feel. I am definitely purchasing this for my bookshelf. Thank you #netgalley for the ARC!

This book was pure magic. I found myself totally enveloped in the world Brown built, on the edge of my seat with concern over his characters, anxiously anticipating what might come next. It’s brilliant, unique, and heartwarming. Highly recommend this one!
This title was so much fun! Like an episode of Dr. Who, it transported its characters to many places in space and time to battle enemies both known and unknown. I loved how retrospective this book was when dealing with Cassie and her past and how all the different storylines came together to create a story that weaved in and out of itself. A very good read!
The Book of Doors was about a magical book that will transform any door. Just concentrate on where you want to go, and you will be transported there. There was elements of mystery and suspense. I loved the characters with there unique personalities and there unique adventures. each character and having the supporting characters each own their unique personalities. I loved this book!
Thank you NetGalley, William Morrow and Gareth Brown for the ARC.
The Book of Doors is a fun time traveling, magical realism novel. It was engaging and had enough of a mysterious lure to keep going.
