It was an amazing book. The illustrations were amazing, it brought the story to a new light. I felt so bad for both the monster and Frankenstein. A must read for manga and classics lovers
Excellent artistic depiction of the Mary Shelley Classic. Crisp black and white art with easy to read dialogue bubbles. The manga format lends itself well to this beloved Gothic story.
A Manga retelling of a classic gothic novel, this YA work is part of a wonderful series that introduces a previously untapped audience to some epic stories. The author and illustrator also portray the original work's main themes with little but efficient text and creative artwork. Who is the monster and who is the man?

Well done! Love the bonus stuff and questions that are designed for teachers. The art is great, the story matches the original. I have read Frankenstein a few times and the manga still showed me things I had missed before. I think this will be perfect for classrooms to give students who don't enjoy traditional books an alternative.

I have read a few Manga Classics by now and enjoyed most of them. I love how accessible they are and at least the medium is going with the times and again, thus making the classics that “everyone should read” (according to old white men) more accessible to both older and younger generations.
The art style again was very fitting and beautiful. I sometimes felt like I was missing bits of it as though I had skipped a page or such, but I’m hoping that was a bug in my eARC.
While the medium was accessible, the language was less so, I believe most of the original language of the classic was kept. It was not as hard to understand as Romeo & Juliet though. Still, I believe more people would enjoy the Manga if the language itself were made more accessible as well, especially children and people learning English as a second or foreign language.
Of course the themes of Frankenstein are still very current and Frankenstein having to deal with the consequences of his actions and hubris could (and should) serve as a lesson to many, especially as only innocents are hurt. As such, the book is oe of the more relevant classics in my opinion and I am very glad to see it adapted into a Manga.
All in all a good read.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an ARC of this book for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I recently taught the OG Frankenstein to my students, and while it is one of my favorite classic texts, they had a lot of trouble getting into it.
After reading this version, I can definitely see myself using it in class for some of my students who need additional support and prefer visual cues!
The adaptation is incredibly faithful to the original text, with only a few minor changes. Even the language remains incredibly similar, which I really enjoyed because I think it helps keep the integrity of the text.
The art is also wonderful, and I greatly enjoyed the author's commentary on the back on the process of adapting the novel. I could also see myself integrating that into my class as well.
A beautiful modern twist on a classic horror story. It’ll never beat the original but it was a beautiful modern retelling. I loved it.
A dark and horrifying graphic novel adaption of the classic novel focusing on Victor Frankenstein's youth and ambition to further his scientific knowledge of the human body, and his monstrous creation that seeks out its own humanity and place in the world, as he haunts Victor to the ends of the earth.
A great way to add a layer to a classic story.
Adding artworks to a pillar in sci-fi/horror genre is no small feat. This was my first official manga read and I was not disappointed. The vibrancy and aesthetics of the artwork kept me flipping the pages.
The manga did stray a bit from the original but it made sense because of the mix media, This felt like a reread of the classic tale and I would recommend it to any fans of the Shelley original
If you are new to manga there is a helpful index at the beginning to give some insight and a "how to" so you have a pleasant reading experience.
At its core Frankenstein is really about what it means to human and what makes a true "monster".
Much gratitude to Udon Entertainment and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.
The book is a manga version of the classic tale - Frankenstein. The illustrations are beautiful and make me feel like I was reading comics in my childhood. The good part is that the essence of the story is still maintained by capturing the turning events of the story. The character introductions played a key role in making the story at par with the original story. Had it been a bit delayed or too early, it would not have had the same impact. To conclude, this version has expanded the reach of this story to people who would prefer a lighter version of this story without watering down the crux.
Thank you @netgalley @udonent for the eARC

A very good adaptation of the original novel! This book presents the story in an easy to understand way, with really nice artwork. I love how much detail was kept in this version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and highly recommend it as a means of revisiting the story. It would also work well to help new readers of the story understand it better. Highly recommend!
Yes! It's another manga adaptation of a classic, and this time around, it's Frankenstein! I couldn't be happier about the news or about the entire experience. Manga Classics: Frankenstein was created by M. Chandler and Linus Liu, not to mention the original author, Mary Shelly.
As with the rest of this collection, one of the biggest points is making as many classics as possible accessible to all readers. How often have you looked towards a classic novel, only to be intimidated by the sheer volume of it? Well, Manga Classics not only changes the format but also condenses the story (as a requirement of the medium).
It probably goes without saying that I am a huge fan of Frankenstein, and thus, I screamed just a little bit when I saw this latest adaptation. Obviously, that meant I had high expectations going into it. So, that raises the question, did it hold up?
Absolutely! M. Chandler and Linus Liu did a fantastic job bringing Mary Shelley's story to life on these pages. Everything from the decisions about the adaptation to the art style itself was well done.
Speaking of the art, I really do feel like it was the perfect fit. The cover should give potential readers a good idea of my topic. It's the right blend of that classic Frankenstein style and the style inherent to manga.
In short, Manga Classics: Frankenstein was pure perfection, and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. It doesn't matter if you've read the story a hundred times or not a single time. Either way, it is an experience worth diving into.
I know the popularity of the Manga Classics series firsthand and encourage educators and librarians to include them. They are wonderfully detailed and rich representations of stories worth passing down. This vision of Frankenstein makes a full and rich addition.
ok, I LOVE Frankenstein. The monster, the classic novel, any and all movies, books and TV shows that have Frankenstein and his monster in them are all automatic must-haves for me. Now, I'm pretty new to manga, but this is by far one of all time favorite mangas AND Frankenstein renditions to date! The story was, of course, wonderful and the art work is gorgeous. It gave all the gothic monster movie vibes and I loved it! Such a perfect spooky season read. If you love manga and classic monsters, you need to add this to your TBR! Thank you Netgally for the ARC opportunity! I've already recommended this to all my friends.
A beautifully drawn manga true to the original work.
Fans of Frankenstein, gothic horror, and manga focused on classics will all be thrilled to add this to their collection. Would also be a great introduction to classic literature for fans of manga who have not dipped their toes into that genre but are interested (or for those that it is necessary to do so because of school).
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read a free copy of this manga. I really enjoy manga retelling of classic novels, I think it's very engaging and allows you to absorb parts of the story in a different way.
I recently rediscovered Frankenstein and I loved it so much more than the first time I read it. It is such a powerful story about life and death, knowledge, creation, loneliness... This graphic novel portrays its beauty well. The illustrations are never distracting and they complement well the general vibes of this timeless classic. I'm so happy I had the opportunity to read it in this form as well. I loved it! My full recomendations!
I am new to reading Manga, but I really enjoyed this book.
I especially appreciated the reminder in the beginning on how to read Manga correctly.
A thoroughly enjoyable retelling of Frankenstein and his monster.
I like the Manga Classics line. These titles do a solid job of adapting the literature they choose, often sticking as close to the source material as they can manage. it's about making the classics approachable in a new way. This adaption of Frankenstein. for example? The art does a nice job showing Victor's mood swings post "there's a monster in my life, and I made it." Sometimes he's downright unhinged about it, showing the whole which one is really the monster question quite nicely.
This was a wonderful graphic novel and great retelling of the popular classic.
