I live for this series, and truly believe it to be the best way to engage with younger readers who might not be the biggest fan of classics. We currently own most if not all of the Shakespeare works from this collection. I like that it’s visually stunning black and white imagery. I like that the graphic novels do not deviate from the original storyline. We will be purchasing this one in the future.
A fresh look for Frankenstein. Disclaimer, Frankenstein is my favorite novel and I’m instantly drawn to anything adjacent. I’m so glad I was able to pick this manga up and see Frankenstein through a different art style. Classics redone in illustrations are a great option for those who wish to revisit a beloved story in a new way, or those who may be intimidated by classic lit. The artist did a great job capturing the mood of the novel through their illustrations — the muted tones and overall style work perfectly and the author does a great job of capturing the essence and likeness of the creature.
A great way to introduce classic literature to an era of graphic novels. It would be even better in color but I understand that would raise the price significantly. Maybe two editions at some point.
I absolutely love Manga i been getting it so much. I was thinking it would be gory but it wasnt not to me. It was beautiful art work and loved the storyline. Thank you NetGalley for this opportunity.
I read original Frankenstein a while ago. It's one of my favorite books for many many reasons. So when I saw manga adaptation of it available on NetGalley, I decided to give it a go. I don't typically read manga so I am grateful for "how to read manga" page in the beginning.
Character designs are brilliant. The monster of Frankenstein looks ugly and unnatural but also human. Also he's much bigger than humans and I appreciate keeping that detail. His tragedy hit me more than when I read the book because I could see him so to speak. Victor Frankenstein character design is surprisingly faithful to the original. He looks exactly how a scientist who is afraid of his creation should look like. I know, it sounds weird but I really liked the character work, that's my point.
The artwork and panel design is also superb. The story was translated into manga really well. Even parts with action which in my opinion are difficult to translate to graphic form. I wish I could give more details on this point, but I don't want to spoil anything and a picture is worth a thousand words.
Frankenstein the novel is a difficult book as all classics are. It's not type of book you can read in one go. This adaptation however is easily digestible without losing anything in adaptation.
A great adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 version of Frankenstein. Like the original book, this rendition is very much about the human condition, with a sprinkling of some classic elements of horror. But unlike the original, this version is much clearer, less convoluted—sparse, but thorough. It did still feel a bit on the long side, but I found it so much more enjoyable a read than the original text (classics are fantastic for education and study, and indeed I still read many, but I seldom find them enjoyable in the same way that I find modern literature). And the illustrations were a great accompaniment to the text.
All in all, this is a great adaptation of the story—all the feel of the original novel but with less words and more pictures!
I SO wish this manga was around when I read Frankenstein the first time. I’ve always had an issue really picturing the monster and how terrifying he is! This is a great supplement to have a better understanding of this classic.
PS: Thanks for including a how-to when reading manga. I don’t read a lot of manga so it was nice to have that reminder before I started reading.
I'm a huge fan of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and thought that this manga adaptation was well done (though I don't think anyone will ever top Junji Ito's). Good job.
I’m not a big reader of manga and graphic novels in general so I don’t know if my opinion carries much weight but I really enjoyed this retelling of the horror classic. I loved the spare drawings and the compelling layout of the book. The story itself needs no critique. It’s a classic and it’s been given new life In manga form.
I jumped at the opportunity to re-read one of my favorite classics in graphic novel form. And it did not disappoint.
The artwork was great, as well as the the drawing of the various characters. It was quite faithful to the book as well, which I appreciated. It was easy to follow the story. The book read very much of a Shakespearean tragedy.
Having these classics as graphic novels/manga is definitely a good way to reach a broader (and maybe younger?) audience.

This is a book I haven't read since high school English literature class. The opportunity to reread this classic in graphic novel form was too hard to resist. I was not disappointed.
As an artist myself I found the artwork was great, the drawing of the various characters well establish, and the flow of the story as drawn was perfect. The monster alone was fresh as the artist vision of the monster did not mirror TV and movie monsters. The lettering was also well established, something I appreciate in my older age. The book read very much of a Shakespearean tragedy.
I would not hesitate to buy this book. This was an ARC provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
This was really cool! As a fan of the source material, I was a bit wary. I didn't really have a reason to be worried. I liked the art style and the narrative choices made sense.
Thanks to Netgalley for a copy for an honest review
I enjoy reading the manga classics line most are a fun way to introduce people to the classics though a format easily accessible.
I thought this adaptation of Frankenstein was good (it has been a while since I’ve read the book so I’m not sure how accurate this adaptation is) the illustration were nice to look at and they were clear.

A great and well done adaptation of the classic by Shelley. The graphics enhance the story. The story is easy to follow and should be a great book for all ages. A great read.
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Feels unnecessary in a world that already has Sunni Ito's Frankenstein manga adaptation. The art can't hold a candle to it and as expected the story is the same thing. Still the art is decent enough to not be terrible.
