Thanks to NetGalley & HarperCollins Leadership for access to this book in exchange for my honest review.
Every project has risk. Identifying and managing it is key to a successful project. Risk and risk management, however, are subjective and is some of the most complex concepts to understand. This book provides practical advice, techniques, and methods for identifying and managing project risk, avoiding pitfalls, and understanding constraints, and monitoring and controlling risk throughout the different process groups of risk. It also covers risk from a program and portfolio management perspective.
The information provided is useful for those who are inexperienced with project risk, but also a good reminder for those who are more experienced. For me, the tips and techniques, metrics, and documentation information wasn’t new information, but it did align with what I was taught in my project risk management professional certification. From personal experience, what he presents in this book is effective for identifying and managing risk. Readers interested in risk, project successes, and risk management will want to pick this one up. Recommended for most library collections.

Nothing I hadn't seen before but useful nevertheless. Was very interested in the part about PERIL database mostly because I hadn't heard of it before. (Project Experience Risk Information Library) - basically lessons learnt. Also used VUCA instead of PESTLE. New, I guess. I liked the case studies too.
"Identifying and Managing Project Risk" by Tom Kendrick emerges as an indispensable guide for project managers navigating the increasingly complex landscape of modern project management. This fully updated edition, aligning with PMI® standards and addressing the VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) framework, solidifies its status as a definitive resource in the field.
Kendrick's book is a masterclass in risk management, offering a comprehensive approach to identifying potential pitfalls before they escalate into significant issues. The real-world scenarios and extensive examples provided in the book are particularly valuable, illustrating a wide range of risk situations and demonstrating practical application of the concepts discussed.
One of the book's key strengths is its thoroughness in exploring various risk identification and assessment techniques. Kendrick doesn't just present theoretical concepts; he provides actionable strategies for discovering and documenting risks effectively. This pragmatic approach is further enhanced by his insights into using risk assessment techniques, ensuring that project managers are well-equipped to evaluate risks accurately.
The inclusion of a system for monitoring and controlling projects is another highlight. This system is not just a theoretical framework but a practical tool, customizable to different project types and sizes. This adaptability makes the book relevant for a wide range of project managers, regardless of their industry or the complexity of their projects.
Kendrick also delves into program risk management, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, simulation, and modeling, offering fresh guidance and advanced techniques. His discussion on significant "non-project" risks is particularly insightful, acknowledging the broader context in which projects operate.
"Identifying and Managing Project Risk" stands out for its clarity, depth, and practicality. It's not merely a textbook but a hands-on guide that project managers can turn to repeatedly. Whether you are a seasoned professional or new to project management, this book is an essential addition to your toolkit, providing the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate project risks confidently and keep your projects on track.
